Freaky Microsoft Piracy Video

What? I......what?!

This doesn't even make sense. How does piracy lead to identity theft? The point is that you don't have to pay AT ALL, so how are they going to get your CC information?

And it's more like, please stop making anti-piracy videos period. I guarantee that they do virtually nothing to curb piracy.

it's because they're doing it wrong

Pretty easy actually. I made the mistake a few years ago to use some pirated software Scanned it with A/V, came up clean, but it had a keylogger bundled in. Had all my accounts taken over on thanksgiving day. Was a huge pain in the ass, but I eventually got most of my money back. Ignoring the ethics, it really isn't worth the pain in the ass to use pirated software.

I see, fair enough. TBH I've never heard of that actually happening before until your story.

Metro UI is M$'s best Anti-Piracy measure to date. Make your OS so shitty to use people won't even want to take the time to pirate it.

So from what I understand from the video, Microsoft has new office software branded by Litware that will somehow steal all of your office equipment. I better stay away from Microsoft Office. Also this company needs to hire a security guard.

sorry but that was actually a pretty good video.. IMO i tell people all the time.. you want to be safe..

don't buy shady, don't pirate, don't be an idiot

this video pretty much puts it nicely..

I agree, nothing wrong with that video. At least they put it out there...

LULZ:D

True enough you don't really know what's in software you DL.....if you are the average user. Everyone else knows what steps to take.

Not condoning, just an observation. Idiots shouldn't pirate.

The point is pirate everything on one computer and do all fiscal and important things on another computer. XD

The video is a bit... creepy... if anything.

The point is clear though you run a much higher risk of your computer being taken over by hackers one way or another using cracked software and even if people say it's safe that's could just be because they only target a small pool of users to build up reputation to get more people to download it and thus over time have a wider range of users to use their computers in a botnet or to steal their identity etc, although frankly it's easier to steal peoples identity in the US by digging though trash in the right area's then it is to steal their info over a computer.

It's an accepted risk but mostly people don't care enough probably because they never been hit. The video doesn't really point to the ethics issues of piracy. Which is up there in property rights and is along the lines like trespassing.

The point is that you don't have to pay AT ALL,.

Yeah but how are they supposed to equate every pirated piece of software to financial loss, since it's obvious you were going to pay money for it, you just happened to choose a pirated version.

I think this video only applies if you're getting your pirated copies of Office from, say, Bearshare or Kazaa.

That was my takeaway

Happens all the time. I think some of you guys have been living under rocks, or something....;)

If your AV/Malware software is not configured to recognize a particular key logger--guess what? When you scan it, it no show-ee. Then what happens is that the info it records is surreptitiously sent somewhere without your knowledge as it--again--fools whatever AV-software/firewall you are running into seeing it as a legitimate program. Most people have heard the term "key logger software" and have at least a dim idea of what it does--if they think about it for a moment they'll realize that such software is not all that uncommon, unfortunately (else few people would have heard of it, etc.)

Then, if you are really, really unlucky, like this guy, you'll start seeing charges you never made dinging your credit card.

The video talks about a couple of different things, actually. One of them is the danger of putting your credit card number out to bogus sites that promise you a Warez deal you know very well you cannot get legitimately--like "Buy Office for 90% Off today & Everyday." That is one excellent way to get your cc numbers hijacked--nothing beats you just giving it away voluntarily, right?

Then, the video talks about what happens when people break into your office network--they can do things like, you know, see everything that gets scanned/copied on the network scanner/copier--just like the video showed-- like driver's licenses & numbers, employment applications--lots of stuff. Stuff people need for "identity theft"--but judging by some of the responses in this thread, not everyone is conversant with the term "identity theft"--which surely surprised me.

The little "people" everywhere represented the hackers snooping your data. I thought it was pretty funny actually, and a very understated way of making the point.

It's a hell of lot better than the RIAA shaking a fist at you and telling you that you're a crook and threatening you with jail time, isn't it? I think so, anyway. Hopefully some people now have more insight into what this little video was all about. It was nerdy--but then it's a video made especially for nerds, isn't it?

Oh, dear. Microsoft should have checked to see if there was a real, valid company called Litware. There is.

Here come the lawsuits.

I never said it doesn't happen, I just have never heard of it happening. And I really don't think it's as commonplace as you think.

It's better than that stupid "future of gaming" one they did a while back... That one was scary and made them seem really really...weird... Watching it now...it shows everyone using a prototype metro.

Actually this is one of Microsoft's better videos and yeah, this stuff does happen.

eh? that was actually a pretty amusing and effective ad... illustrates the perils of phishing websites, and counterfeit software.....

why the hate?

The focus seems to be on the counterfeit software...

So what was the point of copy machine guy and external harddrive girl?

if you watch the video it says

"did you accidental purchase counterfeit software"

this is how your identity can be stolen, you give some fake company all your info including your CC.....

 ..some people... does your mommy whipe your butt for you too.....

That's what happens when you buy from some store you found on a random google search. I stick with known retail outlets / websites.

Don't know about anyone else, but I've never had a single anti-virus program stop everything. And I've tried most of the "good" ones.

Yeah, so basically the problem is that this really has nothing to do with piracy. Hence the responses.

Copy machines aren't just copy machines these days, they are network terminals and can keep images of EVERYTHING they copy and the harddrive connected to a networked computer, that should be obvious what could go wrong there.

Great video but I didn't really catch too much of it over the sound of PIRATING MORE WINDOWS PRODUCTS.

/sarcasm.

So the moral is, don't ever make a copy of a driver's license or check or CC? I don't really understand where you or the video is going with that.

The moral of the story is that you make yourself more susceptible to these kinds of attacks with pirated/counterfeit software which I think is a reasonable claim to make these days.
