4GB GTX680s on the way. Early adopters hardest hit.

A little offtopic..

http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vga/375/accelero-twin-turbo-ii.html?c=2182

Cooling Capacity 250W

What does that mean?
It uses 250w + 300w from the graphics card?

It means that it can effectively dissipate 250W of heat from a video card - it does not mean that the cooler consumes an additional 250W of electricity.

Hard hit? NO. why would I want a 4GB GTX680 when the GK110 is what i'm waiting to upgrade to? :D

I agree, but I wish we knew more about when it would hit. I'm tempted by the 680s, but I think once Guild Wars 2 hits, I will probably play that 90% of the time and if that's the case, I think my 480s in surround will have no problem - giving me the luxury of waiting until the next refresh or the one after.

However, I just got a nice bonus from work and it's making a very different argument...

I haven't seen a white PCB anything since some ATI/AMD based boards a few years back, SB700/800 if I remember correctly. It's a shame as they look fantastic.

I believe the reason they aren't common being that they cost a bit more than they are worth and have issues with electrics...I'd have to find a source on that and may be wrong...

But just the same, a White 2Gb 680 from EVGA first would have me in a heartbeat. Hell I know a boatload of folks in here would buy from whatever vendor could build white PCB anything just for the looks!

Also, OP, your headline is somewhat sensationalist. "Hardest hit", really?
90 odd % of 680 users won't be hitting the 2Gb cap anytime soon.

Actually, yes. Really.

When I read the news of the 4gb gtx 680 I felt like I got hit by a train.

My life is over.

Tell us how it feels to be among those hardest hit by this news and do you think the authorities are doing enough to help the victims of this travesty?

I'm glad it is just the early adopters hardest hit. If you read the N.Y. times or suffer through MSNBC it is almost always "Women and Minorities Hardest Hit"

I couldn't care less about surround. Its no doubt $100 extra bucks for something that I won't use. I already have an aftermarket cooler that I plan to slap onto my reference 680 too.

I doubt it, from what I hear dual GK104 is coming first. You may see a quattro and tesla GK110 this year but I'm not so sure that it'll be a desktop card so soon.

Yeah I was pretty sure the 110 would have been scrapped but the more I check into it, that they were right to beef up the 104, the 110 is a monster die, something like 530mm2. They seemed to string along its development as a Tesla/Quattro card and will probably be a small run overall. The 110 could be whittled down, or the 104 beefed up some more for the 700 series, but I don't think Nvidia will really want to ship it as a price competitive desktop chip, when it will be king of the hill for render farms and HPC's. They could sell them for 2-4k and no one would blink, not being something like 60% more processing power then the 104. First time since its intro and when ATI bought FireGL off Diamond, that workstation graphics adapter won't be some lasered, rewired, or driver controlled version of a desktop chip.

I can see them doing that, but is it more profitable to sell 1 $2000 card or 20 $800 cards? I'm just guessing at the ratio, I have no idea what it actually would be but the cost per unit would be substantially less if they went with a (relatively) larger market.

It would be incredible to put something like that into a mini ITX box and run a really nice NV Surround rig without having to have the giant airflow case...

for one card and a single monitor @1900x1080- what benefit would there be to buy the 4gb over the 2gb?

I guess I'm lost: which market is the GK110 targeting? The GK104-based 680 is a gaming card, not a workstation card. Is the GK110 supposed to be the workstation card of the future or will it be a design that will serve double-duty depending on which firmware they flash on it?

No one actually knows, its all speculation. It may come as 780, or a workstation card, or nothing at all. Engage time warp forward / psychic link to find out for sure.

So at this point in time it is all just rumor and speculation?

Since we have the concrete numbers from the 680 to work with and we know that there is always something better down the road, is there even enough credible information to recommend people refrain from buying a 680?

When the 4GB cards come out and the early adopters surely throw away their 2GB cards... I'll be there.

The ones that are likely to be hardest hit are the ones that jump on the 4GB cards without reading that it offers minimal gains at a likely $100 premium.

Time will tell though.

EVGA transferable warranty even makes it more appealing. Too bad I'm in the early adopter boat haha.

Even the optimistic estimates for GK110 don't have it coming out for another 6 months, so I don't think it is a good reason to refrain from getting a GTX 680 if you need a card now. But it really depends on how happy you are with the performance you haven now.

Aww, I thought you were going to go a completely different direction with this -

When 3dfx was struck down and left us breathless...I was there.

When the 8800's price tag caught so many of us offguard...I was there.

When Bulldozer spread tears to the innocents...I was there.

When thousands of 680 early adopters all cried out at once...I. WAS. THERE.

You're right that's the direction I should've gone ;)

Best post in this thread.

Curious to see what the pricing will be like on the 4GB. Not a relevant SKU to me as I only have one 1920x1200 monitor so I'll likely be going 680 (for BF3 MP ownage). Definitely a relevant card for people with 3x 2560x1600/1440 NV Surround I guess.

The problem isn't the cost versus stock, it chip cost per size. At more then twice as big as the 104, they would make more money selling two 104s then 110 at $1000 let alone $800. At 1k, your selling them to professionals for the most part anyways, who will look at 2k for twice the performance of the 104 and not blink. 110 Makes no sense as a desktop chip, it can't be dual-ed either, so a dual 104 board, would end up being competition for it.

Before when I heard people complaining about Nvidia trying to sell a mid range card as a highend part I was sure that what had happened was that Nvidia eyes were bigger then their stomach and that what people thought was the 110 must be dead. Now hearing they kept it going but the reported features and die size, it's pretty obvious that they had no intention of selling it as a consumer chip and that if it wasn't for CAD/Cuda/Tesla, it probably would be dead.

I just placed an order on a Evga 680 not 5 minutes ago, should I cancel my order and wait for this? I run 2560x1600 one monitor for gaming with a side monitor for apps.

You'll be fine with one 30". I'm suprised you're not running SLi though. No way I could get away with a single card for my 30".

I run two 570s now that I'm replacing with the Single 680.

Just worried if I should have waited or canceled my order to get a 4gb version. The idea was to get one ASAP so I can get good value on my 570s

Seems like a performance downgrade unless you need the extra VRAM for multi-monitor.

I'm jumping on the first 2GB EVGA 680 I find. I think that card will be the sweet spot for single monitor gaming, even at 2560x1600.

I'm unable to run bf3 @ ultra and have had stuttering issues, as well as sli not playing nice with games like wow. My 570s are the 1.2gb version and are limited.

Eventually I will probably grab a second 680, but right now is when I'm going to get the best value for my 570s making the cost of a 680 basically nothing.

Well good luck. If I knew I could get $250 apiece for my 570s I might consider getting a 680 as well, but it kinda seems like the used video card market is flooded right now so I'm not sure that's realistic.

I'm pretty sure I can get 230-239 each which will still keep the upgrade barely any cost at all, and after looking around through other threads it should in fact be an upgrade even if a slight one.

Well I'm glad we have Faux news then, I mean those white heterosexual males sure are doing so poorly these days and need our support.

I doubt anyone buying a 680 is feeling any remorse, they should be quite well aware what 2GB on a card means if anything to them, it's part of doing your research before you buy.

Well hey, let me know if you have any luck. Seriously, PM me.

Nope - I've got 2 580's (significantly faster than a single 680) and i need more horsepower.

Trust me - I WISH a single 680 would get me by. I'd save a lotta dang money.

My single 1.5GB 580 does quite well on my 3008WFP unless I try to crank everything to the highest settings. The 680 will be just what I want.

Very nice. Maybe [H]ard will have another Galaxy giveaway :)

Wishful thinking I know.

My guess is fairly high. Partially on account of "because they can" but also on account of fast memory gets expensive. People see the low prices on system RAM and it leaves them thinking that video RAM should be just as cheap so why not have tons? Well the thing is the ultra-high speed RAM is much more of a bitch to make and to implement on the board (all sorts of electrical issues to consider). Probably at least a hundred bucks more, maybe even $150-200.

Certainly not enough to be problematic if someone needs it. It isn't going to be twice the price or anything, but not a minor amount so that everyone decides to get one.

I want to get a 30" monitor, should I wait for a 4Gb gtx 680? or try to find a 2Gb gtx 680?
