Dark Souls Thread

Basically because I enjoyed playing with friends that had the game as well for Demon's Souls. How it's set up is that for Dark Souls, it's separate smaller servers, instead of one large server like with Demon's Souls. Even though it did take me over 150 hours to platinum the first game, I had others to experience it with. When you have no one to really play with in the 2nd game, it makes the game feel a little more like a grind. Not that it's hard, just better with others.

Are you on 360 or PS3? Because the PS3 side has no shortage of players. And people in a forum I'm part of have little trouble playing with specific people. It does take a few minutes to get your summon signs to show up, but it works. I also have two friends in Germany that play with eachother a lot, and they are running North American versions of the game, on PS3.

*I don't deny/dismiss that you may be having some trouble, but maybe just keep trying? or get into a covenant that focuses on co-op. That can help a lot, too.

When I was playing the game for a while, especially while my one friend was (he has platinumed the game since), it took us over an hour to try to find each other and we did all we could to get onto the same server to summon each other to no avail. It was kind of discouraging. My friend lives like 3 hours from here too and we had big problems. As it stands right now though, he probably won't touch the game again since he platinumed it and will only play other games now. So yeah...

I sucked bad at Demon Souls sucked harder with Dark Souls put in 90 hours to get to the last boss in dark Souls and the last boss kicks my ass even though I gave him a good run for his money a few times.
My favorite boss is the Capra Demon though.

If you can beat Omstein and Smorge you can do anything in life even quit your job =)

Ornstein and Smough are the toughest bosses. What really ticked me off about that fight is their elemental weaknesses. Smough is weak to lightning, and just about everyone has a decent lightning weapon from Sen's Fortress. Ornstein laughs off lightning damage but is weak to fire. I didn't have any good fire weapons, and my stats weren't high enough to make any pure physical weapon do much damage. I ended up summoning someone who kicked Ornstein's ass with some crazy pyromancy.

Started Dark Souls about a week ago and rolled a Knight. Got into the grove of things, but now I'm finding the invasion game a bit annoying. It seems there are a lot of high level NG++++'ers trolling the undead burg and parish areas. Within a few seconds of kindling a bon fire, I get invaded by l337 acrobatic colossi with elemental weapons. One guy just followed me around the entire time and used force, which doesn't hurt me, but knocks me around during fights with mobs. Short of signing out of XBL, what does one do to mitigate invasions?

Stay hollow. Problem solved. If you need to be living for something in particular, just go offline.

Plus people were cheating like crazy with the XBL client (manually editing character data), so you will never have a shot against those people.

My first play through stopped at Smaugh and Ornstein, even though I managed to beat them with help. My character was too much "jack of all trades" and just didn't have the DPS needed to do the fight with my (poor) playing skills. I started over with a pure STR build, maxed out END to 40, got the Ring of Protection, and proceeded to get back to S&O and ROFLstomp them with a Demon Machete. I did some forest farming as well, mostly while watching TV so I was barely paying attention and got up to like Level 90 without thinking about it :p

After about 65 hours on two characters I'm getting close to beating the game for the first time. What an amazing game this is.

This game is next up for me. I only have to finish Viking :Battle of Asgard, which is nearly done. Hope I can get through Dark Souls, it seems like a tough game. I did get through Ninja Gaiden, so that gives me a little confidence.

I can't setup co-op games with my friend or rekindle bonfires in hollow form. Sure I can stay hollow and have my buddy summon me, but the souped up mofo will gank my buddy instead. The matchmaking and/or exploiters are ruining that portion of the game for me. Between Undead Burg and Parish I was human for about 1 hour and got invaded 6 or 7 times. I'd sign in, get invaded; walk out of a bonfire safe area, get invaded; start an area boss battle, get invaded.

Yeah I'm reading there are/were a number of exploits that essentially gave players free reign over their stats. It seems like those are the only people playing and/or invading atm. I've yet to see a red phantom that was honestly within the SL 20 range and geared as such. I do about 200 damage on my Black Knight Sword and it doesn't even put a dent in their HP bar; yet they can all 1-shot me.

I had enough, so when I'm human I resorted to simply DC'ing when I see fog gates pop-up where I know there are none.

Ugh.

Just lost 140K souls after trying to traverse my way back from the "open floor" area after beating the scale-less dragon..... I mean wtf. After first death, I was running back and got hit by a crystal golem mid-run - whereas normally you'd just take the hit - because I was going back for souls of course it made me fly 15 feet off the pathway, I almost smashed the controller. I swear I've lost more than twice the souls I've earned to get to level 90. If I actually knew how many souls I've lost playing this I think I would quit.

No Homeward Bone? :p

Sold this game to help pay for ME3. I enjoyed it, but I reached a point where I didn't want to be frustrated in my attempts to have fun.

Yeah, I haven't played it in months. The sense of danger and awe of exploring is fun, but it just lost its magic after a while.

140K souls that can be easily recouped by forest grinding....

But, I agree the crystal caves were pretty frustrating. Once you know where the hidden paths are, you can just run through there no problem and skip the crystal golems altogether.

I just started playing this after owning it for a couple of months. I died several times prior to and fighting the first boss. I got frustrated for the night and put the game away. Started playing it again yesterday and made good progress and am not dying as much, really like the combat system.

One thing I haven't researched is hollow vs human form? Are there any advantages to being human? If I turn human will I be constantly invaded by twinked PVP characters at this point in the games lifecycle?

Human form increases your HP, resistances (physical, magical, fire, poison, etc.), certain weapon and spell damage, increases your likelihood of loot drops, and allows you to summon friendly phantoms to your world or invade other player's world if they're in human form.

When I'm in human form, I get invaded like crazy. I read that this might be because my covenant, The Way of White (which is the starting covenant for Clerics and Knights, iirc), is often targeted for PVP.

Supposedly you can only be invaded by players that are lower level than you, not higher, which I think is BS. If that's true, then either matchmaking is broken or people are hacking their characters: I've been invaded by players with the craziest end-game gear imaginable, yet I was around level 20 and on my first play through.

Yeah there are some a-holes that play through the game and use soul glitches but don't level up and use that character for PvP only. It's not hacking but it sure is annoying. Needs a bit of skill to beat the game on low levels though.

Or a XBox, where they just maxed out character attributes and left the level alone :p

...okay.... I'm getting tired of going through undead berg under level 10 and getting PvP owned by peeps with epic gear that usually takes two playthroughs to gather.... wtf? Really? Full level of spells at level 6? How is that even fun for these people?

Stay hollow? It isn't hard to avoid getting rolled.

Is the hacking on xbox really that bad? Everyone on twitch tv says its either ps3 or nothing. Why hasn't microsoft released a patch or something, where is all that xbl subscription money going?

Wish I had a ps3, but unfortunately only own an xbox and really want to play this game despite all of the rage I've read so far. Does anyone want to sell me Dark Souls for xbox360, PM me, I use paypal or amazon. I'm going to buy this on monday for sure if I dont recieve any replies by then.

Wait until it comes out on PC.

Is the PC version a sure thing? I haven't read anything but guess work and rumor. Even if it is going to actually happen, will it be weeks or months from now? I dunno, if I was ready to play the game I'd snap up a used console version and have at it.

It's going to happen. This is just an ad for next month's magazine, but the page is indeed real.

PC gamers will shit bricks when they finally get to play a souls game. This game will translate PERFECTLY to PC!

For about 45 minutes, then people will bitch that the game isn't mod friendly, doesn't work with Eyefinity, then people will cheat like hell in the online play and everyone will want Bandai's head on a stick ;)

We'll see, but i was more referring to the style of game it is. PC has needed a souls type game for a long time

Oh, I signed the petition for a PC Souls game. I'm all for it, and might pick up the PC version when it shows. But I don't think it will be coming out tomorrow. It could be many moons before any PC gamers are playing Dark Souls. Also, there is no guarantee how the port will fare. We all assume it will be a dream come true; run butter smooth at a consistent 50+ FPS , be glitch free, never crash or freeze, no server problems or hackers on line, but you never know.

are you trolling? you can say that about literally any game ever ported to PC, Dark Souls isnt under any different light than an other game

I don't recall anyone complaining about the quality of the Ninja Blade port (also by From), regardless of whether or not that game was any good. I think they'll do pretty decent with it. I just hope they don't put it through GFWL like they did with Ninja Blade...

Exactly so, it can be said about any game that is to be ported to the PC. I'm not trolling. I'm saying be mindful about making assumptions that a DS conversion to PC is predestined to be a blissful port. We all want to see a perfect port, or at least one that addresses issues the console game has, but there are no guarantees. Until we have the game running like a champ on our computers, there is no being sure. That is all I'm saying.

Read on Actiontrip.... supposedly "prepare to die" edition coming to PC....
I'll be getting that, no doubt.... unless they somehow really jack it up.

I plan too. Probably be a while before I play it though. I have Xcom and Dishonored to hold me over till AC3 next week.
