New Ipad (3) - will screen protector reduce image quality

I'll be getting my New iPad tomorrow and am wondering if I should buy a screen protector like I did for my original iPad and droid tablet. How much will it reduce the image quality of the new retina display?

If you're referring to those thin sticky films, yes, all of them reduce image clarity to a slight degree. That's the trade-off: a 1 or 2 percent duller display in exchange for casual protection and a lack of finger smudging.

Most people probably don't even notice the difference, and I've never heard of a screen protector disrupting the iPhone 4's Retina Display.

What's going to reduce your image quality more: the screen protector, or all the smudges your dirty little hands leave all over the screen?

I've already damaged the screen protector on my iPhone 4 by making the mistake of having my keys in the same pocket. Glad it was the protector that took the hit and not the phone.

There's an easy fix here - don't put anything in your pocket with your phone.

I'm not a fan of screen protectors - I much prefer the feel of glass. I've found that the glass on the iPhone4 is very durable and quite resistant to scratches - but then again I don't often toss it into a bucket of coins.

And of all the phones that I've seen/worked on with screen protectors - I do notice poorer image quality.

I can't believe people worry about protecting glass.

Even when I had a very soft plastic screen Palm Pilot, a screen protector reduced the screen clarity more than 10 years of unprotected usage would, so I wouldn't use one even on a soft plastic screen.

On glass, total waste unless you have some other purpose than protection.

Really depends on your situation. If you're environment exposes you to lots of dust that contain substains that are harder than glass, you should probably invest in a cheap screen protector.

One of my friend decided to take their iphone 4 on a 2 day hiking trip, and he kept it in his pocket... Well, the place we hiked had lots of sand that contained quartz (its harder than glass). The hike was pretty much all class 3 scrambling and some easy class 4 climbs. Thus sand got everywhere. Needless to say, my friends iphone 4 came out looking like it got sand blasted and probably lost over 20% of its clarity.

It would be nice for Spigen to release their tempered glass screen protector on the iPad. Protects the screen while still giving you the feel of the original glass.

Well it really depends on the quality of the screen protectors...good ones have not been a problem, but like all things, a cheap one may not adhere right and cause viewing problems.

Don't know what type of glass the HTC Evo uses but it's impressed the hell out of me in the 2 years I've had it.

i don't use a phone cover/case/anything - and the glass is still flawless. I keep my phone in my pocket with keys, change, and god knows what else, yet I have no scratches. :)

Granted - the plastic bezel and other parts are pretty torn to hell -- but I hope to be upgrading to the new Google Nexus phone in a few months anyway.

Any scratches that you get with the iPad will likely be on the oleophobic coating rather than the glass.

Screen protectors are a matter of personal choice beyond protecting the coating. I use them on my iPhone because they feel similar and don't hamper the usability of the phone at all.

Not a total waste.... on the first day of ownership I pulled a device out of my chest pocket and accidentally brushed I guess a little too hard against the metal zipper of my hoodie. I've got two nice 1/2 inch scratches to remind me I should have had protection.

I don't protect my screen because i'm scared of losing visibility due to millions of tiny scratches, I do it to maintain resale value.

An oleophobic screen cover has given mine a rainbow sparkle that I am able to get used to, but seriously destroys the reading ease (color uniformity) offered by the retina display. Even though lines are still crisp. The picture is out of focus but you can still see the sparkles, but not their animation upon every movement.
