It's so true, female video game characters are so crappy in general

While this is some what true but the point is also somewhat lost in the fact that most women in real life are in fact crappy in general.

They get better with age but when was the last time you saw an attractive, educated, intelligent woman who was about more than celeberty gossip, parting, and talking shit of face book?

Is this... are you for real? Wow.

ITT, a gaming sub-forum on a computer enthusiast website discusses women's issues and it turns out pretty much as expected: Images containing exploitative, sexually charged exaggerations of the female form and scantily-clad trans-gendered anime characters abound.

Hey dudes lets tackle reproductive rights next.

Keep fighting the good fight against natural disposition. Hopefully we can repress everything at some point and become transcendant.!! !! ! !

What, are they suppose to put ugly fat women in as game characters? I don't see too many ugly fat male game characters either.

Totally, have you seen the exaggerated beefcake roid raging male characters with chiseled statuesque features in most games? Where's all the maleist protestors calling for more fat ugly men or scrawny weirdos that are more representative of your average man. :p

are you telling me the Jersey Shore, MTV, Real housewife's, dancing with the stars and all the rest are being watched by ghost.

While I don't equate watching trash tv to being trash there is often a correlation. By no means am I saying all women but the majority of women around my age that I come in contact with are rather clueless. Just like the majority of women in video games are a cookie cutter stereotype of the ideal woman.

I only have what I can observe and I'd like nothing more than to be wrong. Maybe when I start my new job a female will say did you see that new TED talk and I'll be like thank baby Jesus. But lets be real that isn't likely to happen.

Depends on where you live. I used to live in the Central Valley (armpit) of California; I doubt 50% of males and females there could name the Pres and VP of the USA. Moved back to the Bay Area, and you actually see people out in public with books, reading...again, both male and female.

But those bringing up the unrealistic depiction of males in video games are right on as well. I won't lie, I wouldn't mind the perfect chiseled jaw and eagle-eyed stare of Shepard (not to mention perfectly maintained 5:00 shadow at all times).

Because making generalizations about your purview of your experiences makes it simple right? If you had a semblance of interest in the matter, you would know this is not the case. Women aren't "crappy in general." Regardless of what you think is intelligent or not.

Point is: if you feel you need to just spout generalized comments, you should just keep it to yourself.

I can't disagree with this, however it should be said that when a male hero is made as some kind of gigantic muscle-bound he-man it's because that makes him look cool, it makes him look like he could save the day and fight the bad guys, etc. When a woman is given giant breasts and no clothing it's because it makes her look more doable. I don't think too many character artists are thinking "You know how I could make this woman look more like she could kick someone's ass? Hotpants."

It's a touchy subject, and to be honest it's not just video-games. Not even close. Take your typical "hollywood blockbuster" movie and it won't take you very long to identify which character is the "hot babe", designed primarily to be attractive to male audience members.

My co-worker (an art director at the web design agency I at work, if that matters at all) says that the reason she never cared to give video games a chance is because it's overly machismo ("same old violence") and sexist, with crappy female characters that are "designed all the same".

How fun would a game be if it depicted women realistically? ANSWER...not fun at all. Who would want to watch a game that involved cooking, doing laundry, tending to the youngins and watching Twilight movies?:p

This entire thread is a generalized comment "its so true, female video game characters are so crappy in general". Something of this nature contains no facts so generalization off of observation is all there is. I say if you bring anything other than a generalization into this thread you should probably just keep it to yourself.

The most recognizable character in all of video game history is an ugly fat man... but that's beside the point.

It's not about equal representation of unattractive females. It's about constantly portraying females at only either of the two polar extremes of sexual desirability. That's a problem endemic to media across all cultures (with a few exceptions). This mentality permeates our art and even language. I don't anticipate it will change anytime soon unfortunately because our patriarchal society which encourages this behavior is a by-product of thousands of years of religious repression of women.

Hay now shots are Mario's weight is uncalled for he has a gland issue.

While you may have a point about the religious repression of women there is a larger force at work here biology. Keeping it general people desire and want to be desired sexually on a biological level and this predates religion. Culture works dictates what is desirable and that culture can be manipulated.

Make up, jewelry, fashion, implants, lipo, and everything else is a product of culture manipulating what is sexually desirable and its being done by more than just men. Like men give a rats ass about women's shoes or purses that's a pure women to women thing and has nothing to do with men. Few men look at a woman and say Hot dam is that Louis Vuitton.

I was a History major and had to take a Feminist Thought course. It's all fun and games till you discover it's actually talk-about-menstruation-for-half-of-each-class-period class.

You're suggesting that most women do, and you offering that suggestion is not some intangible symptom of our humanity. It's born out of bias and misogynistic attitudes entrenched in modern culture.

I'm saying that only women notice the brand and price of shoes and purses, not that most women do.

I honestly have no clue what you just said to me but is sounds like your saying that Women spend 600 bucks on a purse and 600 bucks on pair of shoes because Men hate Women.

You might have to explain this a bit more directly.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I have an arts degree (architecture specifically) as my undergrad, and I live in Seattle, a more artsy-fartsy type of city than most. But also, great design and high tech jobs around here.

[*stares at rain outside my workplace windows*]

Computer Information Systems and MBA, but nothing wrong with liberal arts.

Which is even worse than what I thought you were saying :(

I'm saying that your attitude towards women is severely misogynistic and I'm afraid you don't even realize it (but I'm not sure it's intentional). I'm also saying that the misogyny you've displayed isn't natural to humans either. It has been developed and reinforced over several millenniums of religious repression that have cultivated our current patriarchal societies.

I sincerely hope you do a little soul searching about the outlook you have.

The point of this is, a lot of women bitch about a lot of stuff, and if something isn't politically correct or does not satisfy the feminist agenda, then others must suffer as well. When men complain about something, we disregard it and acquire currency.

God bless America

So this went from an artistic depiction of women discussion to a rant about how religion destroys the minds of men?

Most feminists are man haters. I have dealt with quite a few of them.

Nothing wrong with patriarchy.

I'm a feminist. I'm also a man, and I don't hate any of my fellow men. I just know that women are equal in every important way.

Everything is wrong with patriarchy. What's most wrong is the idea that females are or should be subordinate to men.

The oddness in reading your posts is that I thought you were a woman.

Equal in some ways. Different in others such as physically where they are generally smaller and weaker. Some may argue men are better at math/science while women are better are language/arts.

are you saying that men not caring or noticing name brand accessories is misogynistic or are you saying that men thinking the purpose of women's attire is to attract a man is misogynistic .....

Disliking a type of woman isn't misogynistic in the slightest. I dislike Housewife watching, TMZ reading, Facebook stalking, Credit Card debit building, clueless women. This type happens to be most of what I run into. Give me a woman who gives a shit about the world beyond the Kony video they watched; one who has a real job, real hobbies, real intellect, and passion and you have Me as a fan.

While Religion has infused our culture I am an atheist who lives rather outside of cultural norms so religion has little to no impact on my ideology.

Is it misogynistic repression if a guy is a fan of the likes of Gina Carano?
