It has been reported this afternoon that the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Mass Effect 3 have been leaked to torrent sites across the Internet. Mass Effect 3 is due to be released on March 6th. This is an ongoing problem with new game releases and hopefully will not affect overall sales figures.

And yet, while I already paid for it, I can't preload.

I was able to preload on Friday. Took a bit for the preload to unlock on Origin, but I had the game installed by 1:30 that afternoon.

Yeah the ISO has been online for a couple of days. It however is not cracked so you can't play it. The headline is misleading.

There is no working PC version afaik, there's a rip of the game (and all the DLC) that's been around for a while now but it seems to be missing critical files. It won't be playable until after release.

The 360 version on the other hand is already playable.

Nobody is planning to buy this ever since the story got leaked, and the ending got leaked

Its just......god......its like, taking creative writing class, and the stuff they tell you that you shouldn't do to a story, they do all that to ME3's story

The story was leaked? I hadn't known about this.

Would save me a ton of time if true/accurate.

Yes, and if you apply the same logic to The Lord of the Rings, it should never have been published in its form, either. There are things all through it that creative writing classes teach against, but would you go back and "fix" it?

I'm pre-loaded, but of course I have to wait until the official release date to play, for whatever reason. Why do all these companies have to release games on a Tuesday when most people have to work the rest of the week? Friday makes a hell of a lot more sense.

All the stuff I would talk about fixing the ME3 storyline I can't talk about because it would ruin the story for other people here

It's an EA title so take this news with a grain of salt. Leaked or not, it's not like this was from a well respected publisher. And to answer your question, the reason why new games, movies and music are always released on Tuesday is that Tuesday is traditionaly the slowest retail day of the week. In order to help boost daily retail numbers it helps the store maintain a healthy sales level throughout the slow time of the week, and allows the retailer time to prepare a suitable stock for the high retail days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Not sure how posting that, despite having paid for the game, it wouldn't allow me to start pre-loading (yes, I restarted Origin - which apparently has updated twice today - or at least downloaded a patch twice) is somehow trolling.

Comparing Mass Effect to LOTR...
Do you work for EA?

uhh that's comparing what 'creative writing classes teach against', not the quality of the work itself, come on

i never understood why it matters if you dont get to play a game in 1 day or 5 days, the game was ready weeks ago so what's the difference? the only release date issue is when pieces of the world get delayed on purpose

This isn't news. Every single Xbox 360 game is leaked the thursday or friday before release date.

Doesn't matter who published the game, there will always be a group of people looking for a free ride.
There's no justification for lack of character.

Well you're in the same boat as the pirate as they may have a version for pc but they can't play it without a crack which isn't out becuase why bother if you cant get around the "cant play before this date" block,

But yeah ionno whats up with releasing things on odd days why not just Fridays and Saturdays.

And yet, while I already paid for it, I can't preload.

I had the same issue. Apparently, for me, I had to update Origin (again) to get ME3 to preload.

I'll have to be honest though-- Mass Effect and Anno 1404 were one of the last games I pirated. I eventually bought the games, joined Steam shortly sometime beforehand. I haven't pirated a game since then. It's quite a hassle honestly keeping up with various hacks and no CD patches since various games have bugs and need updates. Many aren't even updated or forgotten, and the updates eventually break the hacks anyway. So, what's the point in pirating? You get a broken game for free you can't update because you decide to take the easy way out.

I've been buying games since then, especially collectors editions because I like the extra stuff that's added namely soundtracks that can't be bought anywhere else. With stuff like sales on Origin, Steam and Amazon, GoG, and similar, it's easier to buy games now than before. I dreaded walking into Best Buy to get a game, stand in line and pay for it on top of taxes. Now it's as simple as adding it to a cart online, pay for it and download it. May not be as instant as going out to buy it have the game available to install right away. It's still more convenient than wasting gas to drive 15 minutes to the nearest Gamestop or Best Buy (which I've stopped going to years ago).

Why pirate? Oh yes, I know why. Stupid fucking DRM.

The only issue I have with PC games in general are the protection measures. I'm one of those people who re-install their operating systems on occasion. For me, once a year. I am not looking forward to reactivating Anno 2070 after three or more years from now.

PC developers and publishers need to have a bit more faith and trust in the PC community. Price the game right, don't use stranglehold methods like DRM, make the game worth buying, have as little bugs as possible when released, don't alienate your consumers and fans of the game, provide adequate and knowledgeable customer support, and people will come back to buy more games from you. This is why I have more faith in the indie gaming community than big name developers like Ubisoft. *shudder* That's one company that's completely turned its back on its PC consumers and slapped them upside the head.

I don't get the point of this story. Yeah, the pre-load files leaked early. Pirates can't do anything with them except stare at the files, no?

Mass Effect3? I still have Mass Effect1 in my list of games that I bought a long time ago and still haven't played. I might get around to ME3 by 2020.

Meh, no steam, no buy.

I'm still playing Skyrim anyways.

Set your computer days :Dahead.

Yeah, piracy sucks. It really does.

But at least the developers of these great games we love to argue about so much still get paid. That means something to me.

I wasn't aware that 360 was so open for pirated software. Doesn't it need a hardware mod or something? Wouldn't that preempt the possibility of online play, if true?

In the end, people will always pirate if it continues to be an attractive option.

The saying holds true for piracy: "If there is a will, there's a way." Right?

As for the 360, yes, there is a way to play pirated games on it but requires hardware modding and in some cases downgrading your firmware (if possible). It also becomes riskier because you can have both your account and console banned on Xbox Live permanently. Hence, many hacked consoles are not connected, or they have an on/off switch for the mod chip. I can see why there is a trend towards downloadable, always-connected games in the near and immediate future.

However, it pisses off a lot of legitimate gamers who don't want to always be online all the time. For example, Starcraft 2 or Anno 2070. I'm one of those people that long for the old days I don't have to register for an account just to play a single player portion of a game. Or, play a multiplayer game FOR FREE over LAN without having to pay for something extra like Xbox Live Gold or requiring me to register for an account to play with a friend across the hallway.

With the cost of a second hand xbox, especially one that's been modded (that can no longer play online), it only takes one or two pirated games to make up the cost.

This.

And I fail to see how this is newsworthy given how common place it is for every game to be cracked and released. Hell you used to see games getting leaked 2 weeks before release date rather than a couple of piddly days like you see now.

If anything they should post a news article for every game that doesn't get cracked given how rare it is for that to happen.

There is a huge difference between pirating an XB game and a PC game. PC games get downloaded by the tends of missions, while XB games in the tens of thousands. I checked back in COD3 that it was downloaded over 10 million times for the PC and only about 10,000 times for the Xbox. Its numbers like that, that really drive companies away from doing PC exclusive games anymore. Yes there is piracy on the XB, but it comes at a cost. You cant play them online, you need to do a physical mod to your box, and you run the risk of it getting bricked or banned by MS.

Dev's need to do something to slow down pirates (you cant stop them!). The only way to do it that has had ANY effect is online content. MMO's have a FRACTION of the piracy that non-online games have because its dependant on a server. I have sene some hacked copy's of WoW that has its own server, but the people who use that is a small fraction vs those who pay.

P.S. Skyrim had over 64,000 consecutive people playing legit copies today....more than team fortress 2 (a F2P game), BF 3, MW 3 and CSS.
