Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 1850rpm fans - $14.81ea + $6 flat rate shipping

blah, as much hype as there is for gentle typhoons, I'm still not satisfied with the existing static pressure data testing from the community...

It's a good fan, obviously, but there's still data that I may have to test myself if I'm ever going to see it.

The reason why there isn't more data, is because there's enough to prove these are better than any fan out there by a large margin.

Why waste time doing additional testing when we already know what the outcome is going to be?

there's enough to prove these are better than any fan out there by a large margin.

That's a substantial claim, care to prove it? I don't say this to be antagonistic, I'm just curious...

Obviously fans can be designed for different purposes...You have those in open air with no restrictions, those designed for purely static pressure, and those designed for durability. Because of this, your claim of these being "better than any fan out there by a large margin" is...ridiculous.

I again say there's not enough static pressure data out there for fans in general, let alone this one. If it was me doing the testing, I'd have cfm/noise/pressure data for every fan out there, both with a shroud and without a shroud, at 100rpm increments. Unfortunately martin at liquid labs left out pressure testing with his fans. Not sure why.

^^^ I really wanna believe the GT's are as good as some people claim as well. But there simply is not enough real data to back up the claims and I wonder how much is placebo? The GT's are rare birds indeed.. I've never been able to lay hands on one when I needed a new fan and the price per unit when they become available is usually way out there. Of late I've been using the Cooler Master SickleFlow 120 (R4-C2R-20AC-GP) fans. From first hand experience I can say they push a decent amount of air through a rad. Noise levels are not bad (although still audible) at all and they are readily available for under $10 locally.

Gah... price is still inhinitive:

3 x Scythe Gentle Typhoon Fan 1850 rpm ( 120x120x25mm ) $ 44.43 *
1 x Sales & Shipping Tax / Customs fee 10.25% $ 6.19 *
Sub-Total: $ 50.62 *
UPS Express Saver DDP (72h) (Shipping to US: (1 x 0.961 kg)): $ 16.00 *
Total: $ 66.61 *

$67 for 3 fans?!! I can wait till a local dealer gets a few in stock... I'm not that curious.

But where's the static pressure testing..

In the hundreds of recommendations you find across the tech community. If you somehow find this inadequate you should perform your own testing and contribute it back to the knowledge base.

Well that IS my intent eventually R-Type. I just can't afford this testing equipment on student loans. As an engineering student, I prefer testing to opinions. I do need a couple fans to keep my two 2500k folding machines a bit cooler. I understand the AP-15 would certainly work for me, I'm just wondering if someone else maybe has more data than I do. Is this not a relevant thread to ask about the fan's static pressure statistics over various RPMs? It's a vast topic and I'm still researching it. As an example, there's another deal for the TFC Triebwerk fan, and I'm debating which to get.

I doubt there is a fan out there with more research and end user testing then Gentle Typhoons...at least fans common in the PC water cooling trade. So while you may get in a huff and puff about the lack of static pressure testing, you're not going to find an alternative fan with anymore data available for it. So just accept what EVERYONE else in the PC cooling trade already has...for low and medium speed radiator setups, the Gentle Typhoon series can't be beat with regards to noise/performance.

If you are looking for the ultimate radiator fan, then pick up a 5k rpm San Ace or Delta, and go nuts. But if you want respectable performance, great construction/durability, and exceptionally low noise, then get a Gentle Typhoon.

I'm serious...just buy one and try it yourself. Doesn't take a perfectly engineered research study to tell you what 15 minutes of hands on experience will...Gentle Typhoons rock!

your claim of these being "better than any fan out there by a large margin" is...ridiculous.

no offense, but your claim here is a logical fallacy called "argument from incredulity" (he obviously wasnt being literal). these fans have been heavily tested and are among the best out there. now, i dont know why youre inquiring as to static pressure, as these fans are 25mm depth, but the information is out there. do some digging. if you really needed high static pressure, you would disregard GTs entirely and opt for 38mm depth fans.

I should have used the word praise instead of hype, I know they are top of the line and didn't mean to make it sound otherwise. I'm just trying to figure out what fans to get, given the need for static pressure as a push fan.

Everyone repeatedly recommends these GTs for radiators/high fin density coolers specifically because they're a good balance of several important traits, including durability, acoustically pleasing sound, and undervolting nicely.

BUT...I still can't seem to find information regarding how well they stack up against 38mm fans given equal RPMs. I know there are high rpm 38mm fans, but I only wanted to keep it an apples to apples comparison. For example, I'd love to see how much static pressure a Delta (since they can be undervolted without clicking) has at 1400rpm and 1850rpm. Again, martin at LL has nice data/videos regarding CFM/Noise levels, and said he'd be testing static pressure...but I haven't seen that data yet.

I currently have a 2100rpm panaflo, and I'm considering getting both this GT and the Triebwerk fan to see how my temps are when comparing them with each other. I don't want to hijack this thread, but it wouldn't be a bad thing for it to contain links about this fan and its competitors.

Most people are ill equipped to test static pressure by itself, this is why most people compare temperature improvements with other elements being held constant. As I said above, if the data we shared doesn't meet what you are looking for then it is unlikely you will find what you seek,

I will tell you from my experience the GT's have higher pressure and better rad performance than any other 25mm thick fan. Owning both GT's and panaflo's, I would say the pressure from a GT is similar to a Pana spinning a few hundred RPM's slower. The kicker is though, the faster spinning GT has a less obtrusive noise (to my ears) than the slower Panaflo.

In one of my rigs I have push/pull AP-15's on a top mounted RS360 rad blowing up through fine meshed bitspower fan grills. With this relatively high resistance configuration, the airflow coming out the top of the case is enough to hold a sheet of paper about 8 inches above the case. I imagine you are probably close to an aneurism from the unscientific subjectiveness of that anecdote but that's the best example I have off hand for the power of these fans.;)

running 6 in my main rig, love them, bought 4 more for various projects, usually pay around $16 per

Check this review out.

It doesn't say RPMs in the initial tables, but it has RPM numbers for each individual test. You can easily see how the Gentle Typhoon requires lower RPM for the same amount of airflow through the radiator compared to most other fans. If this doesn't tell you it has significantly higher static pressure than other fans, I don't know what will. The table also lists out the noise level generated for each airflow through radiator, which really is the most relevant part. Less noise for same cooling performance is the point of the Gentle Typhoons.

>.> I just spent the same on 6 deltas that are 25mm and have better pressure so I would love to hear how these are still better than the Delta FFB1212EH. I am gonna use a fan controller to slow em down and at the speed I will have em I should only need 3 and it should be around 2x an AP-15s static pressure.

I think these fans are decent but I doubt they are worth more than $15 a fan and not even that when FFB1212EHs can be attained at the same price, I'm sorry but I think these are a bit over hyped due to the fact that they are good looking fans.

They are QUIET. I've never heard a more quiet 120mm fan and am extremely sensitive to noise. It's not only the decibel level, the noise signature is simply way less annoying to the ear.

I think you missed the point entirely. I can guarantee your delta's wouldn't provide the same airflow through a radiator at the noise levels of a Gentle Typhoon. That's where these fans excel, low to medium speed setups with an excellent noise to performance ratio.
There are many fans with higher static pressure, and many fans that could pump more air through a radiator...but none of those fans can match the Gentle Typhoons from a noise to performance perspective.

Gentle Typhoons aren't for the 99th percentile water cooling build, and aren't for extreme benching. These are fans you use day in and day out to keep temps low but without driving you insane from noise.

Aside from that however, GT's offer excellent build quality for the money compared to most consumer level fans. The bearings in a GT are something to behold!

This sums it up well, the GT's are industrial grade Nidec fans and their life and bearing perofmance shows it. The fans will keep spinning for 20+ seconds after you turn them off.

Delta makes great fans, but quiet is not in their DNA.

I have 31 of these fans and there the best freakin fan i've ever bought and i could not stop smiling once i turned the system on for the first time as there so freakin quiet! Plenty of air flow and i even went with a push/pull setup on all 3 rads.

Night and day with what i was using before with standard fans and screamer fans as i used to grab the higherst CFM i could get.

First time i could relax at the pc without the loud computer getting on my nerves.

So quiet i made sure i got some dead silent pumps as i would finally be able to hear the motor whine on them.

Also made sure to submerge the water line retun to the res as i would most defenitly hear the water spashing around if not.

Get one and you'll understand how awesome these things are.

I was fully going to get 2 or 3 of these but the $16 shipping thing killed it. Would love to hear if there are any other deals coming up, though.

A huge point that people are missing about why the $16 shipping is not an issue, is shipping drops to $6 for orders over $75.
5 fans and you're at $80.

Once you have even *one* of these fans, you'll want spares so that you can use them whenever you have any other piece of hardware that needs a 120mm fan. I bought 10 with the intent of only using 6. Within a week I had used all 10.

Not only that, but if you really don't want them, it will be really, REALLY easy to resell them on an enthusiast forum and make your money back. If you keep them BNIB, you can probably even get a little more than you paid here in the states.

Are you me? Heh, identical story here. In fact, I subsequently bought a few AP-14's just to have some spare case fans for whatever and have since used all of those too. I can't get enough of these fans :)

It won't drop for me. I add 5 to the basket and the only UPS shipping options are $16 and $19 72 and 48 hour service...

$133.18 / 8 = $16.63 per fan

They were on my door step the following morning. From Germany.

might want to contact them, over $75 it really should drop the more expensive shipping.

Ack!
The issue is the fans don't cost enough with 5!
5 x Scythe Gentle Typhoon Fan 1850 rpm ( 120x120x25mm ) $ 74.05
74.05 :(
Add something that's cheap... Maybe you need some screws? ;)
http://www.aquatuning.us/index.php/cat/c380_Screws.html

That did the trick.. thanks! I simply added another to the order. 6 fans.. $105. I'd have really liked to have tried a couple of these first but the reviews have won me over.

In for five. Added a pair of vibration dampers I've been meaning to get anyways to push the order over the $75 mark. Fast shipping was only $6, making the deal overall a pretty good price. I'm excited to finally be replacing the stock coolermaster fans that have been rattling and making noise for a while now.

You will be absolutely blown away (;)) by the difference. :D

I'm about to order a bunch, but I wanted to ask, would people recommend vibration dampers to go along with these, or maybe rubber screws?

I'd be using these fans strictly as case fans.

They honestly do not need any kind of vibration dampening. The bearings are the smoothest you'll ever feel, and the entire impeller mechanism is balanced individually.

Make sure you post your experiences with the fans after you get them! Then in the future we can just point people at this thread. ;)

Thanks for the info! Just ordered 7 of these, which made the total price of each fan come to $17.06. I'll let you guys know how long it takes for me to receive them and maybe post a pic of how they are shipped.

I'm not "missing" anything, I just don't have $80 to spend on fans.

I bought a ton of these when they were OOS world wide on 8/30/2010.. found some small online shop that had a bunch and they were $14 and of course the next day it went up a buck. Contacted the owner and he told me there was none anywhere and if i dont buy them up it might be months before theres any stock again. Bought up what he had left 18 15s and 8 14s. That cost me $393.66. That hurt but after hearing them run.. Could not be happier! haha. Had to check to make sure the system was runing thats how quiet. My wife had no idea the PC was on even after walking by it a few times.. i had to tell her to come check out the PC and she said.. Why its not on! haha

Actually, $5 yate loons are great fans. I'll have some GTs at some point. I'll see if they live up to the hype.

I was running on YL D12SH's from petra's. They don't even come close to comparing with GT's. Frankly, the YL's were worse than Enermax Magma's(UC-MA12).
Want to buy my old YL's? I've got five.

yate loons are great for the price.

However, that's like saying a 10k new budget car is great for it's price and comparing it to a 30k sports car.

Sure it's a great value but it still doesn't have the performance/quality of the higher priced one.

AMD cpus are a good value.. but they aren't going to dethrone intel cpus..

Guess you're doomed to crappy fans. why are you crapping in this thread?

I'm not crapping the thread, but $16 shipping is a shitty fucking deal, sorry. It's not a hot deal if you have to buy $80 worth of fans. By your logic I could say, "we get that you love these fans, stop crapping the thread".

I'd love to have some of these fans but that caveat makes it ridiculous. If anyone has a better deal somewhere for ~$15-17 apiece with no shipping regulations then I'm all ears.

Besides, this is the hot deals forum, not a fan discussion forum. Pretty much everything else in the thread has not been related to this deal for the past several pages.
