Galaxy S III

Yea... Not gonna lie, I've been a stubborn iPhone/Apple homer since the iphone released... it was just so simple and I liked iOS and the clarity of the iPhone 4 but, this, 1080p screen, quadcore.. I may have to switch. I don't think I can pass this up!

I think it's supposed to print money and cure cancer too! :p

That rumor is just setting everyone up for disappointment. At least the 1080p part. The rest is pretty much expected. At 4.8", that would put the PPI (or DPI) at a retarded 459 PPI. There comes a point where higher resolution starts giving a diminishing return and I think that point is around 350. Not to say that higher isn't better, but I think it would be better to stick to 720p in order for the hardware to run the GUI and 3D games/apps that much faster. I can already read the smallest text on my Galaxy Nexus, so why the need to go any higher? Bragging rights? That's about all I can think of.

Another thing; I'll bet we don't see it in the US until Fall if the S II launch was any indication. Then I'm sure Verizon will drag their ass in releasing it or not get it at all. I'm still amazed that they are the only carrier with the Galaxy Nexus. That had to have been one hell of a drug deal, though I don't know if it was worth it to skip the S II for it. All other carriers will have the option of both soon enough (with the exception of T-Mobile probably - though if the hardware stays the same it will still work on their carrier).

Regardless, this will be an interesting year to see what unfolds for us. If these rumored specs are accurate, then it would make it the only phone possibly worthy of replacing my Galaxy Nexus.

Yea..and Verizon won't get it. I don't know if I want a 4.8" screen though, haha.

I would love for Samsung to release this the same week as the iPhone 5, even if it means they have to hold it back from retail. Just steal that thunder and go HAM against the apple product.

sounds sick. running 720p on my gsii and it looks orgasmic, can't wait to see 1080p on a screen of similar size.

BGR writes fanfic, just ignore them. That resolution spec is total bullshit. There is no way in hell a 460dpi phone is coming out this year (if ever - that just doesn't make sense). Similarly 2GB of RAM? Not happening.

The GSII isn't 1280x720, it's 800x480 (as in, it's not 720p)

If it was, though, you wouldn't actually be able to tell the difference at that size between 720p and 1080p. Well, that's not true - the 1080p screen would probably be significantly worse. The corners they would cut to get small enough pixels would make the IQ pretty bad, and performance would be terrible as nothing currently available can push that resolution at a decent framerate. But assuming you had two flawless displays, both with RGB subpixels, one 720p and one 1080p - you would be unable to tell the difference without super-human levels of vision, or a magnifying glass.

fanfic specs, meh
samsung's shitty plastics, meh
pentil, meh

overall = meh

not if you get root and use an app to adjust the pixel density (like "LCD Resolution"). I actually just adjusted it to 960x1600 and it looks quite phenomenal.

It would look even more phenomenal if your display actually had that many pixels. All that is doing is shrinking everything on the display to make it look like you have a higher resolution and give you more screen real-estate. I would never claim that my display is running a higher resolution than it actually is just because I shrunk my font and icons, lol.

of course it doesn't physically change the number of pixels on the panel. it's a simulated effect. still looks great regardless.

If only it worked like that...

That still doesn't change that you wouldn't be able to perceive a difference between ~320 DPI and ~450 DPI without super human vision.

Calling BS on that leak.

1080p on a 4.8" screen is roughly 458ppi, which seems impossible for Samsung's current AMOLED technology to reach. The closest they managed is with RGBG pixels in the Galaxy Nexus.

The most I'd expect is a 720p display, with a slight possibility of them using Super AMOLED+ instead of pentile AMOLED.

I expect RGB pentile 720p, but we really don't have anything reliable yet.

It very much depends on when its released. If they do wait until June I can see them using an Exynos 52xx SoC. Dualcore A15 would be a lot of power, and that matches the timeline for when they'll have shelf-ready silicon.

If its before June the Exynos 4412 will be the SoC, quad core A9. It'll do well against Krait and Tegra3, but the A15 is what we really want.

Assuming it's true for a moment... they think I want an almost five inch phone why, exactly?

The specs and that render look nice, I just hope that when I'm eligible for an upgrade that I'll be able to add more than 32gigs of storage to it and >3,000mah battery to it.

I was waiting to buy a phone for that specific one.

I can't see putting 1080p, you can't see pixel on a screen 720p that small... what's the point beside less performence...

The thing Is about smartphone is baterry life, always worried that it woun'd last a full day

Marketing.

A lot of people don't know what exactly "1080p" is, but they know they should want it.

Was going to buy Note this week, as I want something with large and good screen. But, I can wait with my old Xperia Arc, till Galaxy 3... though, I'd definitely miss handwritten notes and such.

I'll be definitely going Samsung, due to the position smartphone has in the whole idea of digital home in Samsung - tv remote, using to control wifi camera, possibly some home appliances.

4.8"? That's fucking retarded. I don't know anyone that wants a phone they requires two hands to press standby or check their notifications.

It's not as wide as current large display phones as they are using the 16:9 format. Really it's just longer. So it doesn't look/feel as bulky as you'd imagine.

After countless false rumors in the months in advance. Eventually they covered so many possibilities that one was somewhat close.
I don't think that was official BGR. It might be some user comments asking for the unreasonable.

I remember people crying about a lackluster specs when the specs were leaked by the official BGR and how dumb BGR were.

4.8"? Pppphhffftt... I want to hold something tablet size besides my head and see my full greasy face print on the glass after a call.

/sarcasm off

I dunno...

Can someone explain to me why people are making a big deal over a 4.8 screen as being so huge?

It is unlikely to be that much bigger than the Galaxy Nexus. Remember that this will have ICS with soft buttons at the bottom of the screen, it will not have space underneath the screen for the physical home, menu, back, and search buttons. Assuming they've improved slightly since the GN, the top and bottom could be even slimmer relatively.

Didn't BGR actually get the GNex specs right?

Yes, when the leak was like a week before the official announcement. Some of their earlier rumors suggested everything from a Krait-based CPU to it being AT&T LTE (and some "leaks" that it wasn't a Nexus device at all, but a Droid branded one)

I already think my Galaxy Nexus is a tad on the large side even with the on-screen buttons. It's somewhat uncomfortable to operate the phone with one hand when it's awkward to reach anywhere near the top of the screen with your thumb. At that point, the phone starts becoming less of a phone and more of a mini-tab (or "phablet" as people call the Note). I already didn't want anything past a 4.3" device after my Droid, but since the Nexus has the on-screen buttons, it helps out a bit. I don't think I want anything larger though.

Quick question: any news on when this is coming out? Would this be worth the wait or is the S II more than enough already? Are the specs difference significant? It's originally going to replace my Sony Ericsson W995, but that phone got stolen last December so now I'm using a Sony Ericsson K800i. lol

A friend of a friend of mine has a 2nd cousin twice removed who's hairdresser's boyfriend's boss knows someone who knows someone who has heard that it will be released on June 1st. While this is info from 8+ (depending on how you count) degrees of separation you should still consider this information to be reliable.

Yes, just delete BGR from your bookmarks, they write total made up BS, will post a shit load of rumors, and eventually one of them might be correct, but usually they are way the fuck off.

I see the Galaxy S ]l[ having the new Exynos QuadCore...maybe 1.5gb DDR2, most likely 1gb. I would bet a 720p Super AMOLED + screen, it will be similar to the Galaxy-Nexus screen, but better, this time being a + version, where as the Nexus has the non+ 720p screen. Big deal will be the 4.8" or so sized screen, they will not make the phone larger than the Nexus, but fit this big screen in a smaller package, with less bezel.

Battery life on this new processor is supposed to be up to 40% better than the Galaxy S II, that right there is a major reason to get this phone.

Samsung plans to do a worldwide release of the phone at the same time in 50 countries, no delayed release.

I completely agree that if the GN is too big then this is too big also, as I believe the sizes will be comparable.

I have big hands so I feel the GN is just right. I do think that manufacturers need to cater to both sides here. I think there is a market for small, medium, and large screen phones, all with the latest SOC.

There's no way its going to be 1080p. It's just as false as the retina display on the iPad3. A single 720p phone just came out a few months ago... come on...
