The rumors of the next iPad version 3 having roughly double the screen resolution of its predecessors are looking less like rumors and more like fact. MacRumors got its hands on a iPad 3 display and examined it under the microscope. The iPad 3 is expected to be rolled out on March 7th.

Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048x1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024x768.

It better have one hell of a graphics subsystem to drive that resolution, or it'll just wind up being like crap.

So now they need 4x the graphic processing power to push it at exactly the same speed, just so things will "look sharper"?

I don't even have this resolution on my 20 inch monitor! And I'm probably sitting as far from my monitor as you would be holding an ipad in your lap.

Although this is definitely a "neat" feature, I see very little benefit to the consumer. But if the price is right, then heck why not.

This sounds like a feature to "checkbox" so that people buying knockoffs have a tangible spec they can use to make their buying decision easier.

I look forward to the next transformer prime with a 2k screen, then I'll spring. I have too many android apps to justify going anything ios.

I will admit it, I despise apple. I won't buy anything apple, based solely on my dislike of them. So all the apple zealots, save your breath, it's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

This is going to be an excellent product, but one that I won't buy.

I'm a bit surprised the iPad 1/2 were only 1024x768. Granted, that's a great resolution for a smart phone, its not that ...great... considering what the iPad 1/2 were trying to compete with. Laptops, netbooks, smaller notebooks? I haven't seen a netbook in a while below 1368.

At least they can tout the iPad 3 is 'HD' and be capable of natively displaying both HD standards and a fair bit beyond. I think that should count for something?

I'm hestiant to see how this plays out in the gaming world side of things. Will the iPad 3 actually run apps currently available for the iPad 1/2 at 2048x1536 or just render them at 1024x768 and then 'upscale' them to the native resolution ala what the xbox 360 and ps3 has done for years.

Why? On a 10" device.

Considering the resolution is quadrupled, one pixel can be represented by 4 so ipad 1/2 games shouldn't look too bad.

People bitched when it was only 1024x768, not surprised to see bitching now that it's going up, lol.

Won't it be difficult to drive that resolution in games?

The graphics subsystem on the iPad 3's SoC is thought likely to be a PowerVR6, for which the details were just released a few days ago:

http://www.imgtec.com/News/Release/index.asp?NewsID=666

There's several choices in that line and it's not known which Apple would choose.

The other big argument in the rumor mill is whether the CPU will be a dual-core or quad-core A6. Quad-core would be faster, but would be harder on battery life.

It's not so much bitching about the high resolution itself, but it seems like people are wondering if it will actually be utilized with games and stuff. My guess is everything is just going to be upscaled which will probably not be that impressive.

Quad cores aren't harder on the battery life, in fact, they improve it.

I think the higher resolution is cool. Wouldnt mind one if it wasnt made by Apple.

The old http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVztngwuqzc still applies. No matter what they do, people will still pay $600 for it and go nuts. Meanwhile, back in reality Kindle Fire users who have an Amazon Prime subscription to receive all the content they can handle rejoyce after having spend only a third of the cash.

Looks like it's time to sell my iPad2. I hope it's more than just a bump in resolution. I'll wait until all the hoopla is over and see what everybody says. Just making sure it's an Apple and not a Lemon.

Apply for a marketing position @ Google. I'm sure you can convince a lot of people to switch to Kindle Fire since the iPad is sooooo expensive compared to its Android counterparts. When is Google releasing Ice Cream Sandwich btw for the Kindle Fire. I mean the code was only released last November.

Speaking of other tablets, how much does an Asus transformer prime cost? What about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy tab 2?

Not if they simply upscale the games, just like what is done on the 360 and PS3 as most of those games are run at 720p, but upscaled to 1080p.

I love how when a new Android phone or tablet is released with better specs, people are tripping over themselves to talk about how awesome it is and how super amazing 720P on a phone screen is. Then Apple out with a display that will blow away everything else on the market, and suddenly its "OH GOSH, WHO NEEDS THAT MUCH RESOLUTION ON A 10 INCH DISPLAY? HOW CAN THEY DRIVE THAT MANY PIXELS"

oh don't worry, when all of the other manufacturers follow apple like they always do, you'll suddenly start to hear how great it is, then somewhere down the line people will try to claim that apple had no influence on the soon to be ubiquitous high-res tablet displays. Just like they try and claim that apple didn't create the modern tablet (but but but, 10lb brick tablets, apple steals!11!1!), the modern smartphone, app stores (although cydia gets some credit here, but apple gets most for bringing it mainstream), ultraportables. I could go on and on.

Nailed it.

I have an android phone, and I plan on getting an iPad 3, the software ecosystem on the apple devices is simply so much better.

The high quality stuff on both sets is about the same, however there is just more of it on the apple side.

You are missing the point.
Most people who buy iPads buy them for reasons that are irrational. Once you look at it rationally you can see that a Kindle Fire does 99% of what an iPad does, and the 1% ..., well, then you are the 1% with a rational reason.

Obviously the numbers are exaggerated for dramatic effect but the point is still valid. You don't need 2048 for HD streaming, email, web browsing, or e-reading. I can't even take those who suggest photo/video editing tasks on a tablet seriously, and gaming? Gaming will be meh on a tablet no matter what they put in there.

Yeah, and a shitbox pinto can do 99% of what a Mercedes does, so what's your point? Some people aren't content with shit and will pay more for better things. You don't NEED air conditioning for driving around. You don't NEED satellite radio and a CD player. You don't NEED heated seats. Just like you don't NEED a super high-res tablet display, but people want it, and it will improve the product tremendously.

How so?

iPad buyers by and large buy the product not for themselves but to impress others, it's a peer pressure thing that Apple has done an excellent job cultivating.

The one thing I will not argue about is that some people simply don't see the value, or lack thereof, when purchasing any item (not just iPads). Apple's marketing machine has created a perception that if you don't have an iPad you are not cool, and being cool matters to many. That doesn't make the product a good value, it just makes buyers tools.

Since you mentioned the Asus Transformer, I bought and owned one for about a week and found it (and by proxy any other tablet) completely useless. It didn't do anything my phone or laptop didn't already do and was either too large or too small to replace either. Not a matter of screen rez either, it's a matter of utility.

Translation: Thuleman hates tablets and everyone else should too. Anyone buying an iPad is only buying it because of peer pressure, not because they actually wanted a good tablet with excellent performance, the best app support, and great battery life.

is it me but for any 10" or so screen (be it android, apple, kindle, or any other laptop with that screen size), 2048x1536 is just.. too much?, 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (which I find abit overkill already) might have been more of a sweet spot.

Judging by your posts in this thread and your signature, you fit in the category of "hipster".

yeah im with you there. thuleman is definitely sounding like an irrational hipster here. but as a previous owner of a nook color and then a dual-os touchpad, i for one agree with him. i never found anything that i wanted to do on a tablet more than on my laptop. i dont even use a smartphone because id rather just do everything on my laptop. i find it much more productive. i did buy a kindle fire for my sister in law though, and she loves it. so its just personal preference: some people have a use, some dont.

99% of users don't need the power of a laptop for Facebook, YouTube, email, and surfing. Hell I'm a pwer user but I gave away my laptop to ge an iPad because I don't need portable power. I preferred battery life and weight and didn't want a keyboard. Problem with most of you is that you don't think like the average consumer because you aren't. You're power users which makes up the 1%. If I were apple I'd market to the 99% as well.

As for the whining about the high res screen.. I've never heard of such an ass nine argument. Main reason for the increased resolution is for text. Games will be sharper yes, but the majority of games on these devices are for casual gamers. It's not like they're porting over bf3 for the iPad. You guys need to take a step back and breathe. Get over your hatred of apple and just see the device for what it is. Another step forward in tablet functionality and usability that'll push other vendors to either make better products or drop prices. In the end everyone wins.

All I ask for is some objectivity vs blind hatred, the problem with our society today.

Well there are probably going to be a lot of devices on the market with this resolution on the way, the story goes that three suppliers are making this display, including Samsung, so while Apple may be first to the punch, it's not really their technology and I think we can count on Samsung using in Android and even Windows 8 tablets and even other devices.
