According to Fujitsu's product roadmap, Windows 8 will ship in Q4 of this year. Anyone else think this is too soon? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 right now and I see no need to upgrade just yet.

Winndows 8 will hit the market in the fourth quarter, according to a Fujitsu product road map. Touting its upcoming notebooks and tablets in a press conference yesterday, the company displayed one slide that showed a Win8 launch destined for "Q4 2012." Revealed by Italian blogging site NetbookItalia, the slide also showed a tablet with a Metro UI, suggesting that Fujitsu is prepping a Windows 8 tablet for the same timeframe.

Even with the release of windows 8, there is no rush for people to get it. I myself am not yet convinced to upgrade.

It can't come soon enough for ppl using bulldozer for a theoretical 10% improvement and
real life 1%!

Definitely no need to upgrade from 7. Attrition will get enough people into Windows 8.

Cheers!

I just got all the systems in the house updated to Win7. All stable as can be. No plans on doing any upgrades for a while (well, OS wise anyway... ;) ).

Awesome!

4th quarter business is going to be great! Should be a nice salary increase charging people to disable metro. :)

I'll probably get it as soon as the RTM becomes available, like I did for Windows 7.

I like new OS and 8 is looking pretty good.

Nope, not too soon actually. They really need to get this out to compete in the Tablet sector, for which they are very late to the game. We all know this will be a Tablet orientated OS.

But I agree, I certainly won't be upgrading my Desktop to it. Actually I suspect Windows 7 will last nearly as long as Windows XP did..

I'm going to put it on my laptop, probably keep 7 on my desktop for some time

There's not much interest for actuel Win7 user to "upgrade" to Win8.

However, Win8 will open the door for new generation laptop/Tablet. For instance, I'm the owner of a ASUS Slate EP121 and Win7, well, suck on it. I installed Win8 Dev and I love it and I can assure you that the new generation of "Ultrabook" is gonna be awesome.

So no, it's no too soon. It's too late. We should have seen ultrabook 1-2 years ago.

I suspect most manufacturers are focusing on shipping tablets, tablet PCs, and thin-n-light (née ultrabooks) with Windows 8 with full Metro integration, whereas desktops will ship with the option to turn Metro on or off (kind of like when you had to choose Windows XP or Vista preloaded from the factory).

According to my sources, I don't see a big to-do for pushing Windows 8 upgrades on older computers when it arrives. Microsoft seems more focused on deploying W8 with new hardware. Seems they learned something from Apple about OS upgrades.

I will wait a bit before deploying 8. I'm on 7 ultimate now and have no problems at all.

Besides, if they do release 8 too soon it could end up pretty much like ME or Vista. I don't want that.

Too soon? Not sure. Maybe so - Win7 is pretty solid. I won't be upgrading. But this release is in line with the release model MS set up around 2007. They made it clear with the launch of Vista that never again will there be 6 years separating the next iteration of Windows.

Microsoft thinks changing the name on the software amounts to new income. Only an idiot would make the jump to windows 8. No need to...Windows 7 could essentially be patched into Windows 8 for all intents and purposed.

I will use Windows 7 for a loooooong looooong time.

Meh, I'll upgrade to Win8 after it gets Service Pack 1 or 2

Yea no need now, but what if you have a new fancy tablet or touchscreen monitor? I'd take windows 8 over 7.

Got no desires to use a Desktop Phone, thank you...

Unless that stupid interface can be completely turned off, I think 8 is gonna be a flop except for those poor souls who buy pre-built machines and won't have a choice.

I will upgrade my home server to Windows Server 8 (from Server 2008 R2). There's a lot of server related improvements I want to try out.

I see no real need for Windows 8 on the desktop (I have Windows 7 x64 Home Premium).

I see some benefit from a laptop, if i decide to get one. My laptop is already 3 years old and up for a replacement when the time is right.

They need this out to get in on tablets and get in the mobile arena.

No need to upgrade the desktop yet. Although the mobile usage could pull the desktop environments along.

Seeing as how they will have an operating system for cheap tablets they will have "new" income. So someone that wants the new features of Windows 8 is an idiot? And what features are you talking about that can be patched into Windows 7?

I haven't experienced Win8 enough yet. I'll grab the public Beta, see how that goes. I'm in no RUSH to upgrade--it would take something akin to WinXP-vs.-Windows-7 feature-wise to get me to jump on 8 right away. So far, I'm not liking the Metro change but to be honest, it won't impact me very much if I understand it correctly.

Most of my app use surrounds items pinned to the taskbar. Graphically rearranging that into app tiles instead of taskbar buttons isn't going to be a big bother. Since search is integrated into the environment (just like the search in the Start Menu), it's again to me only a graphical (not functional) change in how I use my computer.

I do, however, pity those who aren't used to smartphone-style interfaces (read: my parents...)

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 does everything I want and more...for the first time in an OS.

I'll take whatever comes with the new Kaveri laptop I'll buy in 2013.

They'll shovel it out the door, when they shovel it out the door. Our opinion about whether or not is too early is a lot like arseholes... everybody has one, and nobody wants to see yours!

QFT

Don't see any compelling real reason I would upgrade from Win7 to Win8 on any desktop. I saw the need from going to XP to Win7 because of SSD support and DX11. But, on a desktop, what new feature is a "must have" that makes Win8 THAT much better than Win7? Is there going to be DX12 in Win8? Useless feature until video cards support it. And judging how long games developers have taken to start using DX11, I doubt DX12 would even be somewhat relevant until Win9 or 10 arrive. Bet you MS touts the usual "faster boot times" mantra as a reason to upgrade! WHOOPS.. they already have.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wznucnoc-rY. Oh, I know.. Internet Explorer 10.. new task manager interface, cloud services in Windows Live, new refresh and reset buttons.

Sorry but from what I can see, Win8 is mostly about touch, ARM, tablets, apps, enterprise, and smartphones.

Oh, here is a reason to upgrade to Win8 on the desktop..

I'm expecting some underhanded shenanigans from Microsoft this time around. When you start crippling features on your flagship product to move focus to the "Newest version of Windows" a year before it comes out, you loose a bit of trust in my book.

The developer preview from last year was already very usable.

They *NEED* to get this thing out so that handhelds and tablets can start running Windows.

It really makes no difference if current windows 7 desktop users switch within a year or not.

Meh, I always uninstall Gadgets anyway. Besides, it's not like they released an update disabling gadgets and they're still hosting popular gadgets as well. You can also download gadgets from websites such as deviantart.

I'm going to upgrade whether I like it or not. Being in IT means staying on the bleeding edge of technology as often as you can so you know the ins and outs of programs and hardware without listening to your aunt's son's cat telling you that they heard on the internet from their friend's daughter's dog that Vista sucks.

Me too. I will upgrade when I get the chance so I can stay ahead of the curve.

is there even a public beta out yet ? i ran win7 beta for like 8-12 months before it released.

i want a windows 8 tablet...with a stylus. Note taking on paper is old. I can't find a cheap and reasonable way to do microsoft one note.

I'm, running Windows 7 Pro, on all our systems, except one that only hosts my local Weather station, and XP still handles that Okay.

Not sure Win 8 will turn out to be Vista II, but all I saw, so far, was a lot more bells, and whistles, most of which I would not need or use, and certainly would not pay to upgrade to Win 8, just to further fatten Microsoft's bank account, especially when every time I tried to get any HELP or information from them, they want to charge me money for it?

Microsoft seems to get only every OTHER os release right -- W95, not W98, (ignoring ME which most people did), XP but not Vista and now 7 and with the gimmicky metro interface on 8 -- I use a desktop w/a 24" screen not a touchscreen tablet ... I will DEFINITELY skip W8. Esp so since I purchased a licensed copy of W7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Microsoft is hitting 52 week new highs on the NASDAQ today...should have bought more than 5 shares in 1995...

Funny, I remember Win98 being pretty good, especially Win98SE. XP was horrible too off the bat. Nobody here would budge from Windows 2000 until SP2 came out and totally overhauled XP's security. By that time drivers caught up when finally pushing away from the Win32 kernel and adopting the NT kernel. Vista suffered from the same problems as XP - new drivers were needed and manufacturers weren't moving away from their last-OS phase fast enough - again. The only reason why 7 succeeded was because Microsoft kept the drivers the same as Vista for the most part. 8 is going to be the same as 7 in regards to driver stability.
