Diablo 3 Beta

I cannot see this version soaking up nearly a year of my life like Diablo 2 did. Granted, it is a beta, but hopefully, it changes some of the dumbing-down that occurred before it hits retail, but that may be wishful thinking at this point. Just not really too impressed, because I loved Diablo 2, I mean, who didn't?

I never got around to playing Diablo 2 and it is too late now the graphics are just too out of date. I am enjoying D3 though but I have no past reference. It is amazing that it has been 12-years since the last one. released.

You should still play diablo 2.

The graphics aren't what the game is about. It's about the fun and the challenge.

anyone else think this game is kinda lame?

Some will think that, and it will be inevitable. Blizzard wants Diablo 3 to play like Diablo 2. Just how they wanted Starcraft 2 to play like Starcraft 1. People thought that was kind of lame too, but it was purposefully done. Diablo 2 is a 12 year old game, so the gameplay is going to be "lame" to some people. These people don't realize it's being done on purpose. Everyone will get over it though once they become addicted finding items and stuff.

Beta caps out at level 13 and the blacksmith at level 4. Beyond that, you could try playing different classes I guess, or doing MF runs. Most MF on any of my toons is 74%.

I want the betamax achievement, and over achiever. It's something to do, lol.

I never got my own beta invite but I played a few moments of the beta -- it really feels like a buggy demo imo. The game crashed at least 3 times, each time in a different way. The story was very hard to comprehend based on where I was and what was going on -- I am sure there are cut scenes and or dialog that I am missing. I also had a difficult time adjusting to the primarily mouse-driven movements after so many years of WASD games lol - also unable to change to WASD control scheme seemed weird. I'm still excited for d3 but the beta has kind of rubbed me the wrong way so far. Graphics were also nothing to write home about.

I've yet to crash in over 6 hours of play time.

I hate to agree with such a poorly formed and trollish opinion... but I agree. The Diablo games are not a time to simplify mechanics, and that's exactly what they did. The mechanics are everything. Clicking on targets is only interesting for so long, so you gotta put in a lot of technical systems in the background to make it interesting to the type of people who like these games.

When you streamline the skill, gear and stat systems to this degree in a game like Diablo, you're doing it a huge disservice and cutting most of the meat out of the game. It worked for me in Skyrim because those systems were obtuse and got in the way of the role-playing experience of the earlier TES games. For a game that is about the meat and potatoes of gearing up and building your characters and NOT about the RPG experience, cutting that stuff out is just stupid.

I don't have access to the beta, but from watching people stream it and words from friends who do have beta invites I am still quite excited about the game. Yes at the end of the day it is basically just clicking, but that could be said for D2 and D1 if you really wanted to break it down that way.

I can't agree with that. With D2 (I can't remember much of D1), you at least have some room to play with in terms of character stats and skills, and you need to plan ahead. In D3, however, at least for the time being, you only have two character options: pick the few skills you want to use, and the gear you want to go with it. That's it. At this point, I'm seriously curious if there is even a point in building more than one character of any given class.

I fear this game isn't going to have much replayability value. Not that D2 offered much replayability either, it was 95% Meph/Diablo/Baal runs and 5% getting to that point.

Also, and this is for people in beta.... is it me, or do combat animations appear to be broken? Every time I get into the fight, the weapons disappear and my guy appears to be fighting barehanded.

Lots of D3 hate been going on lately. "Game is dumbed down" "where's my talent tree?" "colors suck" "12 year old gameplay"

After having gotten into the beta in this last round of invites - I'm personally excited about D3. I was skeptical about some of the design decisions - but I think Blizzard is doing it right. Diablo was ALWAYS about the clickfest mindless hack and slash - and then BAM - loot bomb! Did I get anything good? No? AGAIN! ;P

ALL the diablo games are stupid and mindless - but that's kind of what makes them fun. Let's face it, sometimes you just don't have the energy to play something intense and competitive.

I'll be picking up two copies, one for me and one for my wife, and we will play online with friends, and it will be fun, and it will almost certainly hold our attention for quite some time.

I agree. I've completed the beta with a few of the classes and I too like the direction they are going in. I will most likely pick up the CE. Atleast with the new diablo system you will not be held to a couple of uber builds and in fact be able to play the class anyway you see fit and still be viable.

What's your opinion on the removal of attribute points and the skill tree system? Like northrop and krameriffic said, this was a big part of Diablo 2, not just the mindless clicking. The fact that you could tailor your character to exactly how you wanted it. No more obscure builds like a 'tank sorc'.

I believe the new system will allow for more play styles that are actually viable in the long run. There are videos on youtube that show melee witch doctor and melee wizard builds in inferno difficulty.

I really don't see the argument for stat allocation - it really didn't add anything to the game. It pretty much went like this:

1. Never put anything in energy
2. Put enough str to wear your base armor
3. Are you using a shield? Put enough dex to cap block (broken mechanic)
4. All remaining points to vitality so you don't get 1 shot on higher difficulty
5. Find / make a better armor that provides more base strength / dex? Remake character and repeat steps 2-5

^Which meant, that the people who put in more time into the game, were able to get stronger characters. Now, everyone can get that cookie cutter build on their first play. That's not very rewarding, IMO.

And again, with the ability to respec all the skills, can someone please provide a viable argument for creating more than one character of a same class?

I'm not completely against the system, and I'll probably be getting this game on day 1, but at its current state, it feels broken to me.

Sure, as soon as you complete the game on normal you will have unlocked all the skills/spells and perks, but that doesn't mean you will have all the right gear/items to min/max your play style. The designers have said that 70% of the ingame content, gear etc., will come after the normal difficulty.

As far as rerolling classes, I think the emphasis will be on collecting the approriate gear to min/max a specific build, so if you want to change your build instead of rerolling you would do runs to collect the best gear for that build.

Well to answer your question: there isn't one. But that is a positive thing and not a negative one. I want to play my character at level cap, the leveling part (especially at around the 2nd or 3rd time) gets really boring. Level grind on WoW as an example was boring and tedious. Oh you miss-alocated one point and you want to be perfect? Well sucks for you, do it all over again. Maybe if you didn't miss-click and then DC you wouldn't have that problem. It's a ridiculous reason to punish players.

That's why Blizzard started allowing respecing... which isn't even unique to WoW, with later patches it's available in Diablo 2. If you want to regrind all the time, no one is stopping you from doing that, but for everyone else that just wants to enjoy level cap, they don't have to redo everything because of slight mistakes.

(There is also one other reason to reroll, if you're a ladder junky and you want to get to 99 before anyone else for that season.)

Or... you can just use the, all so handy, auction house.

Call me crazy, but I think we're going to be seeing a lot more cookie cutters here than we did in D2.

It's possible. The question is, does Blizzard really want to push auction house money, or do they want to push balance by making pieces of equipment once equipped account bound? That is yet to be seen. If it's run like WoW, it's the latter, if they are really just trying to make extra bucks, it will be the former.

I think that more depends on the drop rate.

A: The best items are extremely rare ( < 0.01% chance ) and don't bind (high runes in D2)
B: Best items are less rare but bind, which is what WoW does.

They already stated that most items will have sub-optimal stat allocations for your class on purpose. Assuming they're still using the same suffix/prefix system (haven't played) there's such a large number of combinations that finding the 'right' one for your class can be extremely time consuming. This is also under the assumption that perfect rares can still beat out uniques.

With the existence of the auction house / RMT I doubt there's going to be binding, but they could surprise us. Or they could pull a "F2P-MMO" on us and make items bind, but then let you pay a dollar or two to unbind it from your character (I've actually played games that have done this...)

I am also not sold on D3. I played all classes to 13, completed all achievements (except for the "impossible" one that requires the death of a member of each class). It didn't have the same kind of hook that I felt with D1/D2 and WoW. I didn't feel pulled into the story, and I didn't feel like I had any input on how my character handled, really. The skills shown in-game didn't have any actual numbers attached to them, so there was no immediate way for me to tell if something was better/worse. There are skill calculators on the D3 website that show hard numbers, but for people still rocking single monitors, that could be very frustrating.

Also, after I realized that my monk was not beating things with his staff of awesome, or glowy fists of killing, I checked out what was up. Apparently monk weapon animations will not be making it to the release due to "time constraints", and the flashy animations that were shown in Blizzcon 08 for the monk were all scripted, requiring someone there typing in the animation commands manually. If Blizz has no problem releasing an unpolished game, I have no problem skipping this purchase.

Also, the lack of LAN/offline play really sucks. Many of my fond memories of this game were playing over LAN at school (when we knew more than the computer teacher, running multiple copies of D2 and Starcraft afterschool), and just tooling around on my own when the internet was down.

I'm just not sold on the game. The only reason I'd consider getting the collector's edition, if I were to even get the game, would be the bundled flash drive with D2+LOD on it, which would almost make up the difference in price between CE/reg.

nobody would do that so stop asking and its probably against blizzard rules to do that.

Interesting. I have no idea how that would even work out with the current system.

It did add things though. It meant not everyone was the same. It let others actually choose how they wanted their character to be, instead of basically told how their character was going to be. If I felt I was lacking health in D2, I could pump more into VIT, but you can't do that in D3. Sure you can find gear with some VIT on it, but you could also do that in D2. I mean, the system wasn't broken, no one was complaining about it, so why take it out? If they needed to, add attribute point re-allocations for a cost or something. If you fucked up on some stats and decided you needed to reroll, nobody cared. Leveling was fun. Over my Diablo 2 time, I probably had gotten over 30 characters over level 80. Even though towards the end of my run I had to do Cow Runs starting at level 40 or whatever, I still had a blast sitting there in the beginning watching my EXP jump extremely fast until I was able to run around and help kill cows, and then go kill people out in the Blood Moor.

Enjoy level cap? There was a very small amount of players on Diablo 2 who actually hit the level cap. Why? Because you could do the same shit at 80+ as you could at 99. The only thing to do at the level cap is duel, or do anything else that 80 would do, so I don't understand why you brought up 'enjoying the level cap'.

Is there any word on if there will be a Hardcore mode or not? I was always so excited when I had gotten to 70+ without being ganked or dying due to lag, heh.

Is it worth playing through again (probably my 4th or 5th time through since patch 5) with the newest patch changes?

yes there will be a hardcore mode. Hardcore mode however will not have a real money acution how (only a gold auction house).

Yeah, that kind of reveals the lack of depth D2 had at the end-game. All of my high level characters just ended up being naked mules while I leveled up a new one lol.

Speaking of that...does D3 have a better way of transferring gear between characters, or some kind of bank? Nothing was more harrowing than transferring high level items in a private game and praying that it didn't crash.

There's a shared stash.

Ah yes, I remember making private games, waiting around for 5-10 mins, leaving/rejoining to see if the game stuck around and quickly transferring my items over. Boy was that risky business.

Bank shared across account.

Pretty much everything in d3 is account wide. Your gold, your crafting progression, and your statsh are all account wide and not character specific.

Or joining a public game so that there would be people in it, and dumping your stuff in some random spot and pray no one saw you go over there. Good times, good times. :D

Glad to hear they made that change. No matter the negative feedback, this is a day one purchase for me.

Anyone else have horrific stutterific lagfest 9000 issues? It seems like every time I fire the game up and a new sound effect, voice over, or even a bobble head on the bottom shows up the game herks, jerks, and convulses. It's horrible when you're about to get swarmed by minions, you hit one, and SLIIIIIDESHOOOOW POWWWEERRRRRR!!!

Otherwise, cool game, bro. Gimme mah lewtz.

Living on the edge :p They don't make them like they used to

I would level my mules to lvl 3 and equip them with Hsaru's set, just in case :D

I've had it installed for days now... It outright bypasses the launcher when I fire up the game now.

go into %program data%\battle.net and move those folders out.

fire up the launcher, disable P2P downloads ( could be taxing your upload ) then click play, those folders rebuild and you're good, no lag.

Or that's been an issue for some people anyhow, i had it and that fixed it for me.
