How many of you guys are being patient about upgrading to a new 28nm video card?

Right now AMD owns the 28nm market and that is why I think the prices are so high. As with recent video card launches of the past many deals start to pop up a few months after release. Since NVIDIA doesn't have a 28nm video card right now it may take a little bit longer this time around till prices settle but I still think it is a good idea to be patient and wait for prices to come down a little.

The whole die shrinking process is supposed to help save money in production costs and if so it would be great if the video card industry passed along some of the savings to the consumers.

I'm being patient on upgrading to 28nm video cards. Once NVIIDIA and more 28nm cards are available I hope prices come down a little and then I may buy a 28nm video card.

Anybody else being patient?

Me. But the only reason I'm being patient is because I can't afford it right now :) If I had the money to spend, I'd have a shiny new 7970 or 2 in my rig right now.

I have the money, but I'm also in no rush. Let's see what Nvidia comes up with and whether it will get prices down a bit. Not that I plan on buying a Nvidia card, but I'm still hoping that a little competition will help prices.

That is what I'm talking about. Patience pays off.

meh nvidia card will probably perform bit better at enthusiast level card ( 7950/7970)
so most likely no price drop for that range of cards because nvidia will price them higher

I plan to wait, for price if anything. Already sold my 2 570s while they still had some value. The only bad part is I went from playing games in surround to playing on a labtop =( For now!

I highly doubt these high end cards will go down in price much. They are worth the level of performance.

No they really are not worth it and there is no doubt the price will go down substantially in the coming months.

AMD just has no competition at the moment. Wait for Nvidia to show up. Demand is high and supply is low right now. It's simple ECON 101.

Been waiting for a long time now. And I intend to remain patient. BF3 plays great at Ultra settings on my current machine, so I can´t justify upgrading now. However I am very curious to see what nvidia has in store for us come April.

Without the games to make these cards struggle at 1920 x 1200, I find myself getting more annoyed at game devs than impatient with nvidia though. I wish that damn next generation of consoles would come out soon, so that the devs will up the visual ante.

Frostbite 2 should be a requirement by law, at least for first person shooter devs. That engine has so much potential, BF3 is only scratching the surface.

I'll be waiting. 7970 did not impress me. Tried 2 for Eyefinity and hated them. Tearing and Crossfire profile issues did not impress me. I mean can someone explain why I cant use 12.1 and 12.2 on the 7970? I jumped off that boat quick...

That sucks it didn't work for you. I can max every single game out butter smooth except BF3 (tex and effects ultra rest on high 16af butter smooth 64 player) and Crysis 2 extreme and ultra with just 1 7970 eyefinity! oced of course. This card is useless if not oced plus the gains are enormous

And knowing there will be no more games to challenge this for along time I am content. Spending more money just for one game to push up the graphics from close to max is like burning money now. I see no games in the next year that will challenge BF3. The new Metro will probably be better performance than the last

Bulldozer comes to mind.

Well BD price is cheaper today than it was at launch. So if your mind was set in stone on buying a BD cpu you could get a better deal on one after the dust settled from initial launch.

Even then, I'd rather spend a little extra and go with it's Sandy Bridge counterpart.

Bulldozer is akin to finding out the hand job you were getting at the glory hole was being administered by a guy -- It was good until you peeked at the performance.

if your mind is set in stone on buying anything, without considering relative performance, you'd deserve getting shafted on price

I am definately waiting for the Nvidia cards. If the GK104 really does pack 768 CUDA cores and is around 50% than the GTX580, than one of those plus another for my b-day will be awesome. I game at 1920x1080 so it will be over kill, but I love overkill :D!

I'll be playing the waiting game.

I usually upgrade every other generation. Went from 4870 > 6970 x-fire so until these two babies start showing their age i'm good.

I set my upgrade to be a Kepler/IB update about 3 months ago. I've been patient thus far, so waiting another 2 or 3 months isn't going to hurt me.

If you are playing 1 screen the 7970 oced is overkill no point waiting if you want the performance right now. In fact it maxes all games in eyefinity minus 2. New Vegas and Skyrim are amazing maxed out with aces hirex texs and skyrim tweaks I can also use 8xaaeq on skyrim butter smooth. I hate the fact that I just had the ending left of the game. I should have waited to play it till I could max it eyefinity. Its gorgeous maxed out on 3 screens

I want the performance now, but not for $550 lol. I'll wait plus I like to see what both sides have to offer before jumping aboard either.

If Nvidia is trying to beat AMDs performance like they did on the 5870 then you could be waiting for awhile. Remember 7970 stock is an ok improvement but when oced and with 3 gigs it easily handles 3 screens and kills on 1

Yes it has some pretty handsom gains over the GTX 580 with the OC. But it doesn't justify buying the 7970 for me right now. You never know what the competitors cards can bring and being someone on a low budget, the waiting game is definately one that I need to stick to in order to get the best performance for the amount of money I have.

I agree. That performance will always be there in the future and likely at a lower price.

I keep forgetting not everyone is nutz like me to just spend on a tol card. I keep thinking all the other things I could have bought

$550 is alot and who knows it could go down $100 in the future. Then I might by nutz and buy another

In case you haven't noticed, we DO get the "savings." Each new architecture that comes out on a new process has more transistors and is more complex than the last architecture on the last node. If you were to produce the next gen architecture on the last gen process node prices would be even higher than they are currently. What you're saying you really want is last generation's architecture on the latest generation's process node. That just doesn't make sense from a business perspective (although it's been done a few times in the midrange).

AMD created a new price bracket which allowed previous gen cards to hold their value.
I haven't seen 570s drop in value, but actually are being purchased more because it's cheaper to SLI while waiting for Kelper.

You had more time to wait really.

I honestly prefer to use an nVidia card if it make sense in terms of performance, due to their drivers, faster support for newer games and also the recent build in fps limiter.

Of course if AMD still holds the performance crown, then that would be the obvious choice.

So yeah, I'm waiting. My GTX 295 is serving me well in Skyrim, and it will be awhile before I finish this game :p

I'll wait for the mid-range Kepler videocard as well. When it's released I'll compare it with AMD and decide which one I'll choose. I know I want to upgrade, but I don't know yet which brand.

With my GTX 560 still performing well, I'm not really in a hurry.

Life is too short to wait, could be dead tomorrow, live in the moment, I want the best stuff now.

On a more serious note, in the world of computing, if you wait, you'll end up keep waiting, there is always something new right around the corner.

I"m not a fanboy or anything but i swear to God i dont get it why people complain about AMD 7970 prices. Wasn"t the nvidia gtx580 3gb the same price when it got lanched?it was faster than the 6970 so it was more expensive. Now the 580 is 450-500$ while the amd 7970 is 50$ more epensive and offer 15-20% more performane, just like the 580 offered over the 6970. What people wanted, more performance for the same price?dis nvidia do this?did they sell the gtx 580 for the same price as the 6970? I really dont get, anyone care to elaborate?

This.......^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Nvidia has always held the price crown. While i am not exactly thrilled with the price of the 7970, it seems totally in line with current performance/price ratios. It is actually a better deal than the 580 3Gb now.

Ya gots ta pay if ya wants ta play....
