A new study from Stanford University indicates future problems arising from the lack of face-to-face communication among children who spend the majority of their time switching between various forms of digital devices. The survey indicates more actual human interaction is needed to develop normal social skills.

"No one had ever looked at this, which really shocked us," Nass said. "Kids have to learn about emotion, and the way they do that, really, is by paying attention to other people. They have to really look them in the eye."

If social interaction is more and more commonly performed via digital communication, then that will shortly become "normal social skills".

Its just a new form of socializing.

I see what they mean from a business standpoint. I have talked to so many of my bosses through email that I almost never see them, some I had no idea where they actually worked. Which is why I'll go straight to them if I have any questions on the email I got :D.

Wow really you don't say??? I think common sense could of told us this...

I'm not really smiling when I put this stupid-ass smile at the end of my post. :)

History repeats itself, nothing new here other then for the people who were born after 1960. Their were books written about this same study forty years ago.

Social networks helps people more socially. Of course people need to go out and meet others, but social networks is a good bridge to get to know people.

The problem with social networks is when people know you...

Humans will just evolve with technology; technology will transform how humans communicate. Maybe in the far future, we won't even use speech to communicate. It's an inefficient way of communication in several ways, especially with the language barriers today.

I look my devices right in the camera lens and infrared receiver every day before I turn them on, is that not enough emotional bonding Stanford?! Geez this study sounds like it was started by someone who's significant other ignored them one too many times playing Skyrim or something

Source? Or is this just what makes sense to you?

I'm pretty sure someone has looked at this before, at least from another angle. Anyway, it seems like common sense to me. I suppose it's a good thing that it's getting out in the media more though.

That's optimistic. I am with Vonnegut on this one, humanity was an experiment and it failed. I seriously doubt there will be much technology in about 100 or so years. Just another footnote in the fossil record.

I'd believe this study. When I call someone who spends the majority of their time "socializing" through Facebook and text; the phone call becomes very awkward because they don't know how to maintain a conversation without the pauses presented over text and Facebook. Don't even get me started on how many utter failures I've seen of guys and girls trying to flirt with one another when one or both of them is socially handicapped thanks to Facebook or texting. I've been tempted to get rid of my Facebook just so that if someone wants to get a hold of me then they'll have to by other means than Facebook.

Facebook and texting are NOT replacements for face-to-face socializing. Sadly, its only getting worse.

Most people that believe they multi-task successfully are in reality fukin'-up shyt in multiple ways. They're the special people... :)

Multi tasking is really bullshit anyway. Having more than one window open on your desktop is not multi tasking. Multi tasking is texting while driving or eating or putting on makeup while driving. Just as an example. We all know how that works out.

Planned work flow always produces a higher standard of end product. Having to roll with the punches is something that has to be done, but ultimately, reduces the standard of the end product. That is why we all hate doing it.

Not sure about kids but, I can say as of lately, multitasking has hindered my sleep pattern. :D

Thats only because we stay so darn busy at work doing the job of 3 people at once (cutbacks you know) it's hard to get any sleep time.
