If you thought tossing a monitor over a fence was stupid, how about causing the evacuation of hundreds of people on an Army base because you thought "it's probably a bomb" was a funny thing to say.

A FedEx driver who allegedly said a package was "probably a bomb" as he delivered it to an Army base is now facing a felony terrorism threat charge. Military police evacuated 215 people from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers trailer at 17800 South Camp Williams Road and the surrounding area after an employee overheard the comment, according to charges filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court.

meh

Someone didn't eat their Wheaties that morning.

In happened on Sept. 20, when a woman asked the 27-year-old Salt Lake City delivery man what was in the package addressed to an Army Corps of Engineers employee.

He replied: "It’s probably a bomb," prosecutors wrote. The delivery man later told police he made the comment "by mistake," according to charging documents.

Well why the hell is she asking him what's in it? A rather dumb question, how's he supposed to know unless he opens it.

people ask that all the time, a properly sacastic comment would go like:

I dunno, i didnt order it

Sorry maam, my Xray machine is on the blick today

A NEW CAR!!!!!!!

Sarcastic answer to dumb question. I'd probably answer the same lol.

I am sorry..I laughed incredibly hard at this. What a freaking dumbass...

Meanwhile in the barracks on base some poor recruit is like, "where the hell is my new video card?"

When I get something from UPS/FedEx I always exclaim excitedly "Woohoo, my inflatable girlfriend is finally here!" I stole that from a Weird Al song and it never gets old. Just ask my UPS driver here at work, he's been hearing that line for 18yrs.

The guy was just charged with a felony and terrorism. Nothing in the news so far indicates it was anything but a joke or that he did anything that made it seem real or actually try to scare someone. It may have been stupid, but since when is stupidity (when you weren't actually trying to hurt anyone, that is, and in this case actually did not hurt anyone) a crime that deserves your life to essentially be executed? Unless there is more facts we do not know, shouldn't there be a Hardforum outcry over this? Certainly a more dangerous precedent than anything SOPA/PIPA or whatever they are called.

So you would like us to check first if someone is kidding or not when the say "It's a bomb?"

Howabout this FedEx boy just learn not to flap his mouth without thinking first.

Because the government needs to lead by example first?

That was a dumb comment on the delivery guy's behalf, but the reaction to it was even dumber... I mean felony and terrorism charges? Why not cut off his tongue too?

A little bit of over-reaction I think.

Too much paranoia over things like this since 9/11. I hear people around here in Wal-Mart "joking" about wanting to kill the President or some other big-wig. Most ignore hearing it, some look a bit concerned and usually one is about to call 911 LOL. Add (in this case) a military base and the stakes increase. Definitely want to hear more about this.

Nothing to outcry.

1) Charged and will be convicted are two entirely different things. They will make a big song and dance about this to set a public example, but the guy will ultimately be let go.

2) Saying something stupid and saying something this stupid are drastically different. Saying something This stupid on a "Military" Installation where they have absolutely ZERO sense of humor about something like this crosses the line into unspeakably stupid.

Damn right they are going to make an example out of his ass. However as mentioned in point one, it is extremely unlikely it will end up more than parading him around in the media a bit as an example and him losing his job. He might at most serve a year in prison, which certainly wouldn't be unjustified given the extreme stupidity of that statement.

In what way would saying, "It's probably a bomb," when delivering to a military installation ever be a reasonable thing to do? Seriously. That's like a border agent asking if you have anything to declare and saying, "Eh, just the two Mexicans trunk." It's just an incredibly stupid thing for him to do. Military installations, even the Army Corps of Engineers, have to take all threats seriously because of their inherent nature as part of the military.

Comment was dumb considering the delivery location, but the reaction was equally (if not moreso) dumb.

If you stand near a cop, put our finger in your pocket, act like you have a gun, then say somethig dumb...should he not shoot you? Sorry, we all do stupid stuff, but we all should know when being stupid will probalby have really bad consquences. If you don't, I have a dog named Darwin that would play a game of fetch the grenade with the pin pulled with you.

...Saying something This stupid on a "Military" Installation where they have absolutely ZERO sense of humor...

I have it on pretty good authority that people on military installations have senses of humor that are similar to people not on military installations. After all, such people are merely a snippet of the broader society with all its shortcomings.

So this happened Sept. 20 and they just charged him yesterday, I wonder what the deal was. Not a smart thing to say though regardless of where he was delivering the package.

Yea, for sure. WAY too much of an overreaction. Stupid. You have to take it as a sarcastic remark. My kids started getting sarcasm a long time ago, why can't adults.... Fuck.

Let the guy go. Someone didn't get it and instead of making them sound dumb, they are putting the blame on the FedEx guy. The lady is the dumbass here, not the FedEx guy.

Thank god we now have a law that we can use to detain U.S. Citizens indefinitely, otherwise this delivery driver would continue his reign of terror.

Fuck you U.S. Government

pretty sure they cut out US citizens from NDAA 2012 in the indefinite detainment clause.

The charges fit the act. You guys are forgetting there is one more step on the way to conviction. A trial.

I hardly doubt this guy will be found guilty.

Why would you ask a fed-ex delivery man what's inside a package? Unless he has an X-ray scanner, how the hell is he supposed to know? I'd give her the same answer he did, just to mock her on that retarded question.

Sure, but just being charged with it will haunt him for a long time. I'm sure if you are arrested for child porn and it gets to be big news but you go to trial and are innocent - you're still going to be accused of it. People are still going to think you like child porn.

Casey Anthony - Innocent? OJ Simpson - Innocent? The list can go on and on. Just because they were deemed innocent by trial doesn't mean their life will be normal. They are guilty in the minds of a lot of people...

I'm sure it won't be that bad, but it will always be over his head.

I didn't see a pic of the guy in the article. Was he just a normal guy, or a guy with a large beard, big nose, and a thick accent? :~|#

Why is it even any of her business whats inside the package?

For all those who are saying the "military ha sno sense of humor" you have no idea about anything that functions on a military base.

First, the military as a ZERO TOLERANCE for such actions or words, and he is very lucky he wasn't shot dead.

Second, We do have a sense of humor, but when someone says "it's a bomb", we action according to our training so that we do get killed. If you have ever been deployed you know what I mean.

If this jackass said shit like that on the base I am on, he would be shot dead. We do not fuck around with shit like that.

"STUPID, Very fucking STUPID"

Yeah, an answer like that is clearly a joke, they could have asked him to elucidate, asked him if he was joking.... Clearing the barracks and charging him is way way over the top. I mean if he was actually delivering a bomb to an army barracks I think he wouldn't go around telling people.

I'd hope your training would have the opposite effect....
