Currently using an old Logitech 2.1 setup with onboard audio, and the subwoofer has some low-level static-like noise that is getting worse over time. The noise is always present even if it is not connected to the smaller speakers or PC.

I'm looking for a nice 2.1 setup that has really low ambient noise (i.e. <3db or so?). I'm sensitive to noise and this will be in the bedroom. Max volume is not much of an issue, as I've never used my current setup above maybe 20% of its maximum. My current PC is built around really quiet or silent components, so that will not interfere.

Looking to spend $100-$150, but up to $250 is possible. Any recommendations?

Go headphones. You'll get much better quality for the price.

Head-fi.org. Hate me, thank me, or disregard if you're not open to headphones. I made the switch, never looked back.

And by ambient noise, do you mean how much noise they produce when they don't have audio going through them?

Tried headphones several times and could never get used to them. Yeah it's probably a good way to go, but the complete removal of all other noises creeps me out.

headphones I use Alessandro MS1 Grados. Speakers, I just bought Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and they sound excellent. Bought them from Klipsch through Amazon (free ship) 150.00.

Also an inexpensive upgrade for your audio over onboard.. look at the Asus Xonar DG 5.1 soundcard.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Klipsch speakers looked good until I saw there were several reviewers saying they developed noise problems like I'm having now. The lack of a power button and high volume levels are not in its favor either.

I had thought about getting a Xonar soundcard, but I need my primary machine to be stable and there were (are still?) driver problems that caused bsods.
