2P and 4P system guide

No,

the small extension tabs are homemade with an aluminium bar and the screws were bought separately.

However, it was very easy to make.

The most difficult thing was to find the screws with the good length . :)

The PSU is really crammed in at the bottom. The board is held on by the the heatsink screws which extend through the board and plywood and have a nut on the back. The bolts clamp the CPU backplates to the wood to help support the heavy CPU coolers without twisting the board.

I didn't connected anything but power and ethernet to it or pressed a power button. The sever motherboard takes care of all that for you over the network. I have it set up to start folding on startup with no gui so it is very easy to get going. It pulled a 6903 but it has only done one frame so far so wait and see.

It's only a 2x8 but the computer is small so it looks oversized. I was thinking of using a HAF 932 but it is 1.5" to 6" bigger in every direction and is 30lbs all by itself. And costs money.

You are a braver man than I using my modded bracket approach in a vertical orientation. :eek:

I think the plywood is 1/2", I needed to use 2" screws to go all the way through it but I cut them shorter slightly too.
 
Interesting. You've got me thinking of doing something similar if I can ever afford the mobo. What are you getting tpf wise so far on the 6903?
 
The mobo is the cheap part. You can find them for $400-$600. The CPUs are what kill you.

CPUs are 6128 8 core G34, offer $400-450 for 4 of them

6903 times are about 23:35 (230k ppd) but I made some bios changes that should give an improvement so I might be able to get close to 250k.

with the ripjaw 1333 cl7, there are two different pcb verisions, green and black...
As of 1/10, newegg was shipping the black pcb but I did see it go OOS one time since then.
 
I have the black PCB ones. There are ripjaws and there are ripjaws-X (black PCB).
 
Looking at it again I may have over stated plenty of room lol, but it does just fit. All I have is a camera phone so sorry the quality sucks.

I cant get a picture of the back heatsink but that one had more room.

The hyper 212s i just got in however did not have room to do this so that's kind of weird. Rather than grinding the post down I was able to just bend / pull the posts out with a pair of needle nose and very little effort.
 
I dont want to be a party pooper but that is an extremely expensive option. If the board were $50-100 it would be a good deal, but you can get a socket F 4P with 16 cores @ 2.2ghz for around $200 for the cpus AND motherboard. For the price of this combo you could get a dual 1366 rig with 16 to 24 threads that would put out much more points. Those 1.86Ghz quad cores will not be fast enough for bigbeta, but should be ok for bigadv.

Depending on Ebay, you can find 1.8-3.0Ghz quad cores for $20-$50 per CPU. I do not believe that board is compatible with the hexacores.

Did anyone ever figure out how to get that board to post? I seem to remember people who purchased that board had problems with power supplies. A fantastic bargain though if you can get the board powered up.

How do I get started on overclocking my g34 p4 rig? Im running 6128s on a supermicro board.

Not a very easy thing and you can possibly brick your board (and maybe the CPUs) It also take a long time to set up and you will need to ask someone to give you hours of their time.

Hop on IRC and see if someone who can help is on. There are only about 3 people that know how to do it. (I'm not one of them)

Does anyone know if it's still worth it to fold on a 4P Socket F system? Considering you can build a 16 core Opteron socket F system for a few hundred dollars. Some low power 2.3 to 2.4Ghz Opteron HE models and you could run that 4P system on about 300 watts. :)

Depends on what "worth it" means to you.

depending on the board (SM) you can have 24 core system fairly low priced.also

My 1207 Socket MB with 16 core gives 90k+ ppd can be upgraded to 24 core and get ~150 to 175Kppd

Is that worth it? I think so

What mobo and CPU's are you using?
 
H8QME-2 using 4x 8389 2.9Ghz, 4U server case with 6 90mm fans, 5x 500gb drives, draws 550w

Currently only running 3x 6 core @2.4GHz as socket #4 went bad.

That sucks :( I feel for you.

On a side note, 4 x 8431 will get you around 170K PPD, and 8 x 8431 will get you from 514K-540K PPD.

This would be of great importance now with the new WU.... and would make for some great budget -bigadv16 folders

Hence the question, 7im has invited me to fold, post tpf and state a case for changes with the new projects but i still thinks this merits attention. I am will to assist in this as i do have a suitable candidate. and we do have more than a few L5640's around, plus its cheaper than trying to find some quicker hexes - even if the board is bricked a replacement is a couple of hundred.

Not only that but given the power limitations on the asus boards, the uber xeon's are not available as an upgrade
 
Wow -- I've been reading hardocp since ~2000 but haven't ever posted, and this might seem spammy so I'm going to keep it ultrashort and will remove this if anyone objects.

Anyway, this seems uniquely suited to this thread -- I happen to have come into possession of a _lot_ of 4p Socket F Boards (Tyan S4985, flashable to support Istanbul) in 3x 1000W PS SSI-MEB Supermicro cases (http://imgur.com/a/1KWF9) and I can only afford to populate one or two of them. So if you're interested drop me a line or respond cause I'd rather get them to people in this thread than put them on ebay or amazon :p

12 Years of reading the front page -- not of the forums :) I mean, I've popped in hear(ahem here) every once and a while but I stay occupied on mersenneforum.org (been doing prime95 since before it was prime95 :) (Feb 1996) and a few others...
 
It's pretty open to negotiation -- these are unused except for POST validation (pristine interiors, etc) But the top of the cases has gotten scratched during storage (I'll add a pic of that).

I guess $450 for the cases, $300 for the mobos, $150 to throw in a third power supply instead of the stock two; and I'll included 4 all copper Socket F heatsinks w/ each case. Shipping would be from the Seattle area (or pickup can be arranged). Bitcoin accepted as well at the current exchange rate, and I'm open to offers.

The shipping weight will be around 85lbs FYI!

Any chance we can get an update with socket 2011?
2P socket 2011 is starting to hit reasonable prices and ebay is overrun with spicy chips, but we do not have any info on the possibilities with the different boards.
