Transformer Prime, when and how much?

Resisting if Futile, just got my Prime on Friday and I love it so far. Updated right to ICS and the dock is sweet. I think this will be a good replacement to the laptops I have. Mostly wanted this so I could watch my TV shows from my WHS on this.

So far so good. I want the TF701 with the high res screen. To me, a tablet lover, the ppi of the screen is a serious issue. I hope the next gen Android and iPad tablets all come with screens that let you view a full 8" by 11.5" pdf in full screen mode. This is good for not only PDF journal papers & textbook but also for magazines. It will make tablets useful not just for media consumption, but for productivity consumption.

Whatever the availability issues, or higher specced versions coming out, the transformer prime is awesome. Not overly thrilled with ice cream sandwich being incompatible with a lot of apps, but whatever. Yep, typing this on mine-it came Friday.

What's the verdict on the wifi and GPS issues. I'm thinking about picking one of these up (if they ever get back in stock), and I read a couple articles saying the case causes poor signal, but is being fixed in the TF700T.

Seems like Asus is really screwing the pooch here, announcing a better model this soon as well as saying it fixes certain usability issues.

I could forego the 1080p screen and get the current one, but not if the wifi signal is always going to blow. Anyone seen any issues with this or is it an overblown problem?

No doubts about that in my mine...but $$$ are limited...I really do want to get the one I have waiting at Best Buy, but sometimes one must think forward (and I already have two tablets which function perfectly right now, so the higher res screen is the real reason to upgrade).

But which or what kind of apps are not working with ICS? Any idea of what "a lot" means?

From my reading about this issue...the wifi thing is going to be user dependent..i.e., what your environment is because that will determine whether you get wifi signal or not...this is a highly variable and unpredictable thing....YMMV.

As for the GPS...I think that is just going to be spotty in general. If I got one I would expect to use my Dual XGPS150 GPS receiver linked over bluetooth, keeping the distance between the TF and the receiver small.

What's the verdict on the wifi and GPS issues.

Wifi has been fine for me. It tends to pickup wifi from a shorter distance than the other wireless devices I deal with, but the strength is consistent (measured across hours of web browsing on my couch and while wandering around my house), and the speed is fantastic Take that as you will - if you plan on spending a lot of time on the absolute edge of what your wireless router will support, you may have problems, but if you're just sitting in your backyard, and dealing with one "bar" of signal, it's just fine (I experienced none of the signal dropping in and out, which would get incredibly frustrating). The tablet may just be more "honest" about its signal strength than most devices, actually.

GPS, I haven't tried. The GPS on my phone works great, so I haven't bothered playing with the TP's GPS, yet. I will at some point, but it's been low on my list of things to do with that tablet.

But which or what kind of apps are not working with ICS? Any idea of what "a lot" means?

The big thing I've had issues with is games that are designed to take advantage of Tegra not being updated for ICS. Honestly, the vast, vast majority of apps should work, but it was an annoyingly high portion of the apps I wanted to try.

I'm of the same opinion. I want a very high res screen on my tablet, and neither the iPad nor the TF101 actually satisfied me in that regard. My biggest gripe with the iPad 1 & 2 is the resolution. It's 2012 FFS, so why ship 1024x768 screens that came out in 1998?!?!?!

I ordered the TF201 based on the impression that it was going to ship with the high res screen. When I heard about the delay, and then heard it was shipping with the same resolution as the TF-101, I cancelled my order.

I sold the 101 last Fall because I heard that September/October was the release date for the 201. If I can hold out this long, I know I can hold out til March or April for an updated, higher resolution replacement in the form of either the TF-700 or iPad3.

I'm trying to make my TF201 a good replacement for my laptop, and in doing so I need a good way to print from this thing. I have a printer connected to my main pc through usb and I can print to it from my laptop over the network. Any idea what the best way to print to that printer would be?

Also, I can't seem to find any way to change the margins on polaris office, which might mean that there are some features missing in other areas that I'm not aware of yet.

Google Cloud Print?

Exactly. I'm holding out....and even though I know intellectually this is the right thing to do for me, I still struggle a bit actually doing it. :)

Comments like yours help me stay on track!

My 32GB CG Prime is coming in tomorrow. I don't know when the dock is getting here though as I ordered it from Amazon and the Prime from TigerDirect.

Amazon wanted me to wait until Mid-February for my Prime when I ordered Prime in Mid-December.

I don't get the obsession over high resolutions in tablet and mobile phone form factors.

More pixels to drive means more processing power required and less battery life. It means a terrible gaming experience, whether through interpolation blurring or slideshow native performance. And for what? Does anyone who uses a 24" 1920x1200 monitor 3 feet away ever complain about pixel density?

Just bought one today. So far so good. No problem with the wifi signal.

The screen is gorgeous. It is heavier than I thought tho (first tablet :-D).

Told my wife this will make business presentations easier/ more sophisticated. Still need to find any real use for the thing lol!

That depends. Besides, giving up some battery life might be worth it for a better screen.

It means a terrible gaming experience, whether through interpolation blurring or slideshow native performance.

That depends too. If you up the power of the GPU, then gaming doesn't have to suffer. I'm hoping that Apple won't release a higher res screen unless the up the graphics ability to compensate. There are rumors that this may happen.

Obviously, you don't read text on a tablet or do any kind of productivity related task. I can see ill-formed characters due to pixel density being too low. I have a 25-inch 1920x1080 screen and sit 3 feet away...and no, I don't complain about pixel density. But that is not the same situation when viewing an iPad. Have you ever seen text on a retina display on an iPhone 4? See that and you'll know.

Well, that's what happened on the iPhone 4. They merely overclocked the GPU on an updated 3GS SoC (which Apple named A4), and as a result, the iPhone 4, at native resolution, normally falls behind about every modern smartphone in benchmarks, 4S did resolve that, of course.

And by all rights too. The iPhone 4 is old as dirt in phone years!

I'd be perfectly happy with a prime 2 or iPad 3 that had nothing better but an upgraded screen with a appropriately supped up processor. Ok, I would not mine some upgrades to both iOS and android 4.0.

iPad 3 would be the front runner for me if it came with an SDXC slot like the TF700.

As it stands, I have a 32GB MicroSD & 128GB SDXC card sitting on my desk waiting for the TF700

For me, the higher pixel density is all about better, easier to read rendering of PDF material. I could really care less about how well the latest Unreal engine game performs, and streaming video will more than likely just be rendered at whatever its native resolution is and upscaled for the screen resolution.

I just bought the transformer prime.

and it is a really good tablet, when compare to the XOOM,
i had xoom since it was released, and loaded ICS before i sold it.
ICS does make the XOOM run abit better but when compare to the prime.
it was big different in the smoothly in everywhere.
launcher/ brower/ games

I really dont see higher res screen on the new prime will do much to me at all.

I am using a qhd screen HTC Amaze 4G
while my brother just got the Google Galaxy Nexus which has a 720P screen.
I really dont see the big different in email reading/ texting
but i do notice some slow down when i go through the stock launcher/ browser

Just curious, what do you do with that much storage on a tablet?

Large amounts of storage gives us hardcore desktop users some room to breathe; my music collection alone is 65 gigs and it would be nice to be able to have that with me for extended trips.

Ha. I have around 90gb of music, but I'd never carry all of that. Heck, most of it I don't even like. But I agree -- I like lots of space to have room to breathe...when I don't, I keep worrying about running out of space.

Same here, but battery advances and/or power efficiency of the components had better be keeping pace.

Finally managed to order a champagne keyboard dock from newegg! I was feeling very accomplished for catching it right as they came in stock but it's like six hours later and they still have stock :p

From those who have upgraded from an original Transformer, is the performance difference noticable in day to day use? I'm considering making the move since im finding performance and lockup issues common especially when multiple apps and browsers are open.

So I got my Prime from Tiger Direct on the 19th after ordering it on the 17th, with free Econo shipping too.

Sadly though, I am having to RMA my Prime as there was pitting in the aluminum back plate. Worse still, the only repair facility is in Grapevine, TX and after reading this thread I did NOT want to send it there.

My dad has the original tablet which i have used quite a bit over the past half year. I would say the tf201 is noticeably more powerful and i haven't had any FCs while using the stock browser with multiple tabs. Have you always had lockup issues with your tablet or did they occur after you had owned it for a while?

I just received my keyboard dock for my tablet and I'm really impressed, it seems to work really well. If you've been debating whether it's worth getting one I would say that it really does complete the package.

Wonder how long it will be before it is safe to get a Trans Prime ?

I received my Transformer Prime from Amazon on Thursday. Fell in love with it over the last three days. Shipped it back to Amazon for refund this afternoon.

The wall charger just randomly stopped working. The tablet would still get data over USB but wouldn't charge. The data cable and wall charger seemed to be of shoddy construction.

It's really disappointing that ASUS could build such an amazing device and then skimp out on such a crucial detail. Apparently others have had this issue, and ASUS demands that they send the original charger back before sending them a replacement. They will not cross-ship a part that must cost them less than $5 to manufacture. Unbelievable.

After the horror stories I've heard on these forums, problems with my motherboard and this experience, I would not buy another ASUS product.

Depending on your definition of safe that could be right around when the hardware is obsolete. Honestly it's not like asus is going to make any big changes to the product... are you just asking when will there be consistent stock?

I've wanted a tablet for so long (never owned one). I'm just not sure if this meets my definition of passing quality control though. I'm starting to contemplate waiting for the Ipad 3.

(wonders to himself if you can put ICS 4 on the ipda 3....lol)

What problem with your motherboard are you referring to?

I really wanted a Transformer Prime. I had one waiting on me at Best Buy, too. But the wifi and gps problems..and the all metal back which indicated they gave no considering for optimal signal reception, compelled me to not pick mine up. Even worse, though, is that they announced an upcoming version with a 1080p screen coming this summer. I'm sure by then they will have the antenna issue fixed and then I'll reconsider buying one.

And no, you won't be able to put ICS on iPad 3. Hopefully, there will be a new version of iOS which will add support for widgets and stuff. I'd like to have one Android tablet and an iPad3. And eventually a Windows tablet.

"stock" ? no I mean is it safe as in did they fix the problems yet or is it still just a crap shoot whether I will be paying to ship it back ? (sorry , dumb question and prob too early and now MB's are being brought up, I have had Asus vid cards,motherboards...etc and never had a problem with them so...)
Was looking forward to getting one but I'm not into gambling with expensive tech. (did it before and do not like it)

To fix the reception problems they would have to alter the location of the internal antennas or modify the back with some kind of RF Window. As far as I know, this has not been done.

I wasn't sure if they could fix or not , sounds like like not.

Sounds like it's easy to figure out whether it has wifi/other issues or not, is Asus and stores being good about returns ?
Guess I have some reading to do.
