Google talk app that doesn't suck?

I assume you are talking about an iOS app? I have used Talkatone in the past and found it feature-rich and easy to use, albeit somewhat slow on my 4th Gen iPod Touch.

Gtalk+
BeejiveIM (best yet)
Chat for GTalk
Vtok

I need something that stays logged in at all times, has reliable push notifications, and the UI doesn't blow

if it exists, I will buy it.

IM+

Free version has adds. I strongly recommend buying it

Supports push and stays logged in as much as long as it has a data connection

Are the push notifications reliable? I've used several apps where it just doesn't come through or I get them like an hour later lol

They seem to be for me. Try the free one and upgrade later to the pay version if you like it.

How is Trillian on battery life for the iPhone? (I am a Pro user already and have been for years and have used the app on Android, but curious about it under iOS)
Pretty good so far, I sort of turn it on the whole day on my 4S, doesn't drain battery that much...

I just downloaded this

any way to change the sounds?

No clue on sound, I disable the sound though, only the notification sound from the iOS itself.

I've genuinely tried them all, and the overall best in my experience, if you only need text chat and want a free app, is Meebo. The connection is stable, push always works, and the interface is clean (though the colours are quite pale). The rest all have problems in one way or another, though I haven't tried any of the paid versions.

I'll keep it in mind -- I'l trying trillian right now and paid for a month.. so far it is working pretty well.

Thank you!

Push has always worked 100% reliably for me in IM+, Beejive, and Trillian. There is no reason for them not to work. All 3 companies have plenty of resources to run good servers. I choose Beejive because i like the interface the most.

Note that if you only need Google Talk and no other protocols, that you can get Beejive for Gtalk that only provides Google Talk alone.

Only minor gripe is that it doesn't support Chat State Notifications, so it won't tell you when the other person is typing.

EDIT: Had a look at other options, and would go Beejive if it wasn't stupidly priced. Verbs IM is the same - not much more than just text, but the interface is beautiful. £1.59 for the app would be great, but not £0.69 + £2.99 to unlock push.

Went back to Nimbuzz, and oddly, all the previous problems I had with it have vanished. Worth taking a look at as well.

beejive would frequently sign me out for no reason (even after changing to a 7 day "keep me logged in")

trillion seems to be working great for me now..!

I guess its a ymmv type thing!

again, some great suggestions here guys and thanks again!

I have had good experiences using imo, it delivers push messages reliably, has a reasonable interface, and keeps me logged in. IM+ felt "overweight" to me, as well as being quite expensive.(totally subjective)

The one app I would not recommend is Verbs. Their app was totally unable to keep me logged in(even after I paid the $5 upgrade fee), and I constantly got delayed push messages.
