Been searching around... Was nothing about Kepler disclosed at CES, or am I missing it somehow? Figured it'd be on [H] first

Nope nothing. Nvidia talked about Tegra 3's Ninja Core and well pretty much just that.

There won't be any Kepler announcement here

This was a reply posted by nVidia at their official Facebook page

NVIDIA Hey GeForce fans, thanks for your excitement. We're not talking about Kepler at CES, but we're still on track and will let you know as updates become available.

I am hearing out till June now........dunno.

Won't AMD have most of it's enthusiast line-up out by then? Geez if it's true Nvidia is giving them six months free in the market.

six months to pump out non reference cards, work on drivers, and cover the market, and then when kepler hits they can just drop the price.

hopefully they get this, they need it

I'm not worried at all. My set up will tide me over till NVIDIAs next release.
A lot of doom and gloom going on in the forums regarding no kepler at CES...really no biggie but I'm sure kepler isn't too far away and I'm sure it will be a superior product! It seems NVIDIA have a pretty large and loyal fanbase...its all good in my opinion!

The only reason i stay with nvidia is because of their drivers, sli support and 3d support. Since i dont care about multi monitor setup... I am ready to buy another product. It the gk104 beat my sli 460 oc, I am gonna get it and probably sli them if they are worth it. Rumours so far say that it will be a little faster than 580 and about 399$

All it does is hurt the consumer. With nvidia unable to keep up with AMD. They can keep the price high.
Nvidia needs to learn from AMD how they get product out so much faster.

I think a lot of it will depend on just how bad 7970 will hurt current NVIDIA sales.

people should appreciate how nvidia has bigger fish to fry. kepler for mobile and project denver for servers and the next console cycle are all bigger deals than the high end video card.. (whether or not that is a good excuse for being 6 months after amd/ati in the high end again is up to the reader)

As far as I have read AMD graphics chips will be most likely in the next Xbox, Wii-u and may be even ps3(not sure about this though). It is widely reported that next wii and xbox will have amd graphics.

No wonder AMD decided to price up the 7970. They would not have priced it that high withouth having some info on kepler. If Kepler was one month out AMD would have been a little conservative on the price.

This sounds more and more like a summer release.

AMD won all 3 console contracts.

Does this mean probable large price drops on 3gb 580's? :D

hell would have to freeze over for that to happen. maybe 20 dollar MIR's from manufactures but thats probably out of the question as well. the 3GB cards are specialty cards so the manufactures control the prices on those, not nvidia.

Yeah, apparently nVidia is a pain in the ass to work with, which is why Microsoft went with AMD for the 360 (Xbox 1 used a Geforce3-esque gpu) and Sony is making the switch with the PS4 as well. Nintendo has always used ATI/AMD chips.

If anything, at least we'll get a lot more consistent performance between the PS4 and whatever the next Xbox is called.

Are you sure? First I heard of that and the rumors are Sony are moving to PowerVR hence the extended GPU licence that Sony announced with PowerVR. Is there any evidence AMD won the contract?

i think the only thing is for certain is that the PS4 will NOT have a nvidia chip in it since all the rumours point to sony moving away from them. To which company can be up for debate.

As for rumours, i thought i read Intel powered GPU, then powerVR then AMD so it's kinda switching every 6 months.

NVIDIA had the fastest GPU for nearly 2 years and they are unable to keep up. :D

I guess it pays to paper/soft launch.

AMD didn't paper launch the 7970. It's out in retail channels now, as evidenced by other users here on the AMD subforum. And it's middle of January. If NVIDIA is delayed until June/July..

Well, technically, they did paper launch back in December, but the hard launch Jan 9 came and stock seems to be doing pretty darn well (selling well but enough cards available).

Isn't that pretty much the definition of a paper launch? Announce the card, along with reviews, but don't ship until a later date? Jan 9 wasn't a hard launch, it was just the release date as the card was already technically "launched".

Exactly what I was trying to say :)

I used to review hardware. I had GeForce2s, GeForce3s, the very first Radeon card, etc before the cards were actually available, and reviews went up before then as well. Since when is this a new practice and why is it frowned upon now? It's one thing to "launch" a card and then have it be unavailable for 2 months, but I'm pretty sure posting reviews and announcing the product before it is physically available is the norm not the exception.

I think that the view of paper launches changed with the totally botched and horrible Fermi launch where they announced it with wood-screws like 8 months before the hardware was actually available. :-p Since then it seems the view of paper launches has been much more negative (at least from my observation).

It used to be normal, true, but people didn't like it (because they don't like hearing about things they can't get - just human nature) and for a couple of releases they were doing true hard launches, where announcment and availabiltiy were simultaneous. Once people got used to that, it is hard to go back. Just like people bitched about the 7970 pricing because they were used to AMD being the cheaper bang for the buck company. Expectations.

AMD still IS the cheaper bang for the buck company. Just so happens that the 7970 is fast enough to be better price/performance than the 580- Especially the 3gb 580.

Can't wait till this comes out...I definitely want to go back to the green team

Nvidia needs to learn from AMD how they get product out so much faster.

And in return AMD might learn from NVidia how to actually make money.

Depends on your resolution. You can probably grab a used 580 (1.5 GB) for like $350-400 for 1080p or lower gaming and have it be just about as good.

Really only works if you compare the same generation though - not really fair to compare the 28nm next-gen AMD part to the 40nm last-gen Nvidia one. We'll see what happens when Kepler comes out - if a $550 Kepler part kicks the 7970s ass, then AMD won't be looking so good any longer (except maybe then they'll lower the price :))

I fail to see how Nvidia will sell ANY 580s if they don't drop the price. Only a complete idiot would by a 580 that costs MORE then a 7970 and is slower by 15-30%.

I dont know what newegg you have but it must be different than mine. Almost all of the 580's are at least 50 bucks cheaper, theres just a few that are the same or more than the 7970.

i think he is talking about 3gb 580s though i do believe there is one that is the same price as the 7970.

at least, i think he is talking about the 3gb versions lol.
