Samsung S27A750D 120Hz

Well Vega and Skully are both ZR30w owners who swear by the 120Hz Samsung now. Most others I talk to say I am smoking crack if I switch to this from my ZR30w. So I dunno.

Get both get both! :D

I still use my ZR30w for a lot of things! Gaming, however, is no longer one of them.

I am going to be eating crow with all the bashing I have done about Asus support on these forums.. I went and ordered a PA246Q. I just pray that it comes in with no issues, because the company I ordered it from is just as bad as Asus when it comes to RMA's.

I wanted the S27A750, but could not justify buying it without the support for DVI, and I refuse to pay the extra premium of 950 because I don't have dp.

I think the difference other then the stand is the 950 has a dvi and the 750 needs a display port to use the 120hz refresh rate. So if ur vidcard has a DP then I'd get the 750.

I am wondering if I get 3 of these for eyefinity, how much GPU power I'll need to run more than 60fps...

you could have used the 750 with this

sixth post down in this thread says they work @ 120hz

Did anyone come from a IPS monitor to this one? Did you like the results? Ordered one should be here today. Coming from a Dell 2005fpw.

I have both U2412M and this. There is black light bleed in a line on the bottom and glossy means reflections. However, I don't have any regrets, I'm sure you know the positives already.

Hmm well I just pulled the trigger at tigerdirect, $399 ain't bad although that estimated delivery date scares me. I just hope all this 120Hz jazz is the real deal, it will have to be something special to replace my ZR30w as my primary gaming display!

It's well worth it. It's an amazing screen. I was previously using properly tuned $1800 CRT's and never thought I'd switch over to a 120hz. I tried out the 24" BenQ and Acer before this and wasn't impressed with the image quality the had, but this Samsung has much better color. The glossy screen really adds alot of color depth.

I hope so. It's my nostalgia for 2004 and playing UT04 on my Viewsonic 22" CRT that has me interested in the 120Hz display. Once I switched to LCDs, I lost the smooth motion and have been gaming at 60Hz ever since. I am approaching 30 years old and I think my eyes aren't quite what they were, so having fluid motion again would be greatly appreciated.

The only problem is I LOVE 2560x1600. My 30" IPS has been wonderful to me. Going back to 1080p is a huge downgrade... but going from 60Hz to 120Hz is a huge upgrade. I hope the tradeoff is worth it! I'll admit the Samsung should look sexy next to the HP... one for gaming, the other for web browsing and movies.

NukeDukem: I'm sure youll like it. I recently went back and tried two 22" CRTs and thought why the hell did I ever go LCD.... but the space of the CRT was killing me and being refreshed to what a CRT could do left me wanting more....I decided to splurge and got the 23" and have been very happy since. NO it still is not as silky as a CRT at 120Hz but it still is worlds better than those crappy Acer 23" LCDs I had, color, contrast, motion.... everything was better.

BTW YOUR ALL WELCOME! Why you ask... because that is my freaking luck that right after I buy the damned 23" the 27" goes on sale for the same price! If I held out it would have never dropped in price! If it is still priced at $399 come tax time I'll buy it and sell off my 23" in a heartbeat! granted I like the pixel density of the 23" but at least Ican sit further away form it comfortably and save some desk space by pushing it back.

I received my S27A750D from TigerDirect today, 4 days after I ordered it (it was backordered then as well), so you shouldn't worry about waiting long. I have been blown away with how fluid 120Hz feels! Unfortunately, I have yet to get 3D working.

I'm have two 5870's in Crossfire, and I'm running the Catalyst 12.1 preview drivers that introduce HD3D Crossfire support.

I own the full version of TriDef3D 5.0, but this monitor won't work with it. I'm forced to use a custom version that is 4 months older than the main version, so I'm not sure about 3D Crossfire. There's no TriDef control panel so I can't even see how the display is set up, though it's supposed to auto detect everything.

In Battlefield 3, changing the 3D setting doesn't do anything, and Deus Ex gives me side-by-side when launched from the TriDef game launcher. Frame sequential doesn't work, and I haven't found any that will let me change that.

I'm stumped at this point.:(

Are you getting a disconnect sound in windows when turning on or off the monitor?

I have been getting this, and was wondering if it's a defect with my display, or possibly a video card issue.

RacerJim: First get the 3D glasses out and hold the power button to sync the glasses, it will display on screen that the glasses are now synced. For battlefield 3 I think when you use the built in 3D you have to set the display to Frame Sequential manually, then tap the power button on the glasses to turn them on.

Everything else through TriDef as long as I launch the game through it and have a profile for it, it seems to kick in automatically (still have to turn the glasses on sometimes). (keeping that simple since you own tridef so I assume you have used it in the past)

That is the method I use currently. In BF3, the glasses are working; I'm just getting a 2d image. In every other game I try with the Samsung-specific TriDef, I get side-by-side. I also have yet to see any automatic transition to 3D mode.

What version of Catalyst are you using?

To Burpy, that disconnect sound is normal. I never turn my monitor off. I use the Eco motion sensor and have found it to work very well.

Awesome, my s27a750d shipped out today from Tigerdirect :)

Glad I got in on this deal while it lasted, it's no longer available via TD online as of today. $150 less than the 'egg is a hell of a deal. I look forward to seeing what 120Hz and 3d have to offer!

Well, it looks like it might be an AMD driver issue?

I retract my previous statement that the regular version of TriDef 3D doesn't work. It did say that a compatible 3D display was not connected. That is, until I did an uninstall/driversweep of Catalyst 12.1 preview and installed 11.5b.
Once installed, my monitor was detected (I set it to Direct3D Stereo Max Hz). Once Crossfire was disabled, 120hz frame sequential 3D worked perfectly over Displayport.

I tried installing 12.1 over that, and it went back to being undetected. What's happening with newer drivers missing functionality? I would be missing out on many improvements if I stuck to 11.5b, so I'm going to wait for AMD/TriDef to fix things.

Got mine today from TD. It is absolutely gorgeous!
Make sure you have a mini-dp converter if your video card doesn't have DP input. Luckily my friend had a converter he didn't need otherwise I wouldn't have been able to use this till next week.
I am very happy with my purchase!

I just wanted to post this resolution to a problem of running mixed refresh rate monitors on the same pc in case it hasn't been mentioned here, and if it has, then this could be a reminder or a heads up to people who might have missed it.

As per this thread "Dual Monitors: 60hz + 120hz woes "
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1038093326

If you run 60hz monitor(s) with your 120hz monitor and mouse over to the other screens, your video playback and games get all choppy. This is resolved by going into your gpu driver panels and turning the gpu scaling on , on all of your monitors.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I sprung on the 120hz 27" 399.99 deal on this monitor and once I tweaked the color settings and OSD brightness+contrast quite a bit, worked the kinks out with the stutter/lagging, and later stumbled upon the "fastest" response time setting in the OSD that I had missed, etc.. I ended up very happy with this panel. I always thought the blur reduction/improvement was subjectively "about half as much" on 120hz monitors from reports, but I didn't put it together that people were comparing to a fast 60hz tn I guess.. or I didn't realize just how slow my ips panel's response time was. I did notice how much it blurred on fast FoV movement, and I did use a fw900 crt for several years so I knew.. I just didn't put it together that compared to my ips that "half as much" was more like 3x or greater reduction in blur (my ips is probably 10.xx to 12.xx response time :b ). Anyway I was so-so but still ok/fairly happy with this purchase, then found the faster response setting. Even if its some kind of overdrive it does the trick so far and really brought it more into crt range. I'll test more of course - these are just early impressions.

Good luck with that. I am on my second PA246Q bought through Amazon and will be sending it back next week. The first had intermittent flickering and would go to black screen for a second or two before recovering. The current one has a few stuck pixels just below center. Glad Amazon has been very easy to work with on returning these.

I'm not sure whether to try another PA246Q or move to something else.

I'm looking at buying this monitor after holding out on a 2070 CRT for several years. I missed the Tiger deal by a day unfortunately, although I was planning on getting one anyway. Maybe I will wait a bit and see if any more deals come up. I have an old GTX 280 without DP (might upgrade in a few months, but I want it to work on this for now) so I will need a converter. This 750 doesn't seem to have the backlight bleed/pinch issues of the 950 model with DVI, and I don't like the weird look of the 950 anyway. I'll probably keep the CRT as a secondary display. A few other questions I'm wondering about:

Has anyone used an active DP converter like that Atlona one with this monitor specifically? Does it add any significant input lag or have issues with different resolutions? I'm seeing conflicting things about this.

Does the monitor have its own fixed aspect scaling or would I have to rely on the video card drivers for this?

Is the 3D useless without an AMD card? 3D is not a big priority for me but might be fun to try out once in a while.

Also, is that 700 model going to be released in the US any time soon, like the next few months? It looks similar but has DVI, so it would be ideal if I could actually buy it.

I'm pretty sure it has no on the fly integrated hardware scaler since those introduce input lag, and this monitor has reportedly less than 4ms of input lag (its supposed to be one of the fastest gaming monitors available after all). Most screens with a scaler have 16ms - 39ms (or more) input lag in my experience. You can change the aspect of the monitor though which might provide some flexibility. (4:3, 16:9, "screen fit"), but its more like a manual "Pan and Scan" squash type of thing I think. I'd just use the gpu.

.
The 3D movie playback doesn't matter which video card you have, but I assume you mean gaming. I'm not really interested in that and haven't looked into it, so I can't really comment on it but I think people said they got it to work with their amd card which I have.
.
no idea on the 700 model that's the first I heard of it. The only problem I have with displayport is that I may not be able to do a long run with it like I did hdmi. I even bought a very heavy gauge dp cable but the 27A750 freaked out when I connected it. I had it left in a coil though so I might try it again stretched out and away from all my power cables and such to see if I get any better results. I'll also try it to my cinema display and see if that is any better as a comparison. I only have one heavy gauge mini dp extension cable at the moment but was hoping to do a long run to each monitor eventually.

I will keep that in mind. I have had great luck with monitors, or I am just not picky enough. Could be the later.

Thanks for the reply.

The 4:3 option should be good enough. I mainly want that for old games since the video card driver support for that can be dodgy.

Yeah, I was referring to games. I think there is some alternate mode that does the 3D processing on the monitor end and works in any game, although I don't know if it's any good.

Anyone using those DP converters on this? That's the main issue holding me up now.

I am almost certainly going to get this monitor in the coming weeks. I am still very confused about the glasses in particular though, so those of you that use 3D may be able to help.

Samsung does not list any replacement glasses on their website, and the TV model glasses are not interchangeable (can, but with loss of brightness) - This has already been covered in the SA950 thread on page 22.

This leads people to get aftermarket? glasses for replacements or better yet maybe a set that is rechargeable. However! I checked the SA750 manual online and on page 26 it lists the replacement model as SSG-M3750CR (which is not listed on Samsung's website). And again - However! The only semi-reputable place I can find this model is at Tigerdirect.com (which is the same exact website as circuitcity.com and compusa.com). There are a few other websites that list them, but they list them as 3D TV glasses which theoretically would not work well with the SA750 (so again, im confused).

I'd like to think that Tigerdirect simply fat-fingerd the model number, but the model is listed inside the SA750 manual. Am I missing something here? Has anyone tried using another set of glasses with their SA750 or 950?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As a side thought: if Samsung is going to make a monitor that requires an small, integral and fragile component I would think they should feel obligated to sell replacements. Not to mention if I just want a friend to join in. I'm still scratching my head over this.

:confused::confused:

I just pulled the trigger on this one :) Hopefully it arrives by next week! Got it from TD for 399.99

Mine arrives tomorrow, looking forward to it. It's odd how TD has them for such a low price, everywhere else is at least $150 more. Not that I am complaining!

They were $650 for quite awhile originally too. I got in on the amazon deal from compusua. Just a reminder to go into the OSD and set the response time to "highest" when playing games (I just leave it on since I don't watch movies on the monitor much). That overdrive or whatever it does is a huge difference.
.
Another reminder is to set the display to gpu scaling in your gpu drivers if you get stutter/lag on video or games when crossing to a 60hz monitor in a multiple monitor setup.
.
I tweaked my settings pretty well now and images look good even nearby my 27" cinema display IPS. The glossy helps a lot. I've been at work a lot this week so I'm looking forward to more gametime on it on my days off.

I'm actually a fan of glossy when I can design my room around it. I turned my corner desk out from the corner of my rec room, taking over the entire corner and facing it outward rather than the stereotypical "bookshelf" setup that tries to tuck your deskspace away against the wall. In that setup, all my room lights are in front of the desk in the main room space - behind the back of the monitor, including a window. I have a shaded desk lamp on the far extent of the "boomerang"/stealth bomber shaped desk. Those lamps are adjacent and do not show up in (not reflected in) the monitor from where I sit. .

Whenever I put my response time to Fastest I get some really funky green color trails. It is extremely noticeable in everything from Skyrim to Minecraft. The Faster setting doesn't do it, though.

This monitor is a beast. I have been using it for a few days now. I finally took the plunge away from my trusty CRT. This monitor is the only one that seemed to fit the bill of truly taking the place of my old CRT. I play FPS games and I need the smoothness for the quick action. I am pleased with the Samsung Sa750.

I jumped on this earlier today as well, from Tigerdirect's Amazon storefront. They have run out of stock again now but the $400 price doesn't seem to be a mistake. I will just try that Atlona DP400 converter. That one EVGA forum post is the only report out there of anyone using it on a 120hz monitor, but it apparently works. If it adds a lot of input lag, I guess I will just live with it or stick to 60hz until I get a new video card.

I like glossy LCDs much better too. They look a lot closer to CRTs than matte LCDs do, and I'm fine with adjusting the placement of the desk/lights in the room as needed.

Funny thing is i talked to the guy on the phone this morning he said my item would ship out today =_=

In case anyone else is experiencing the color trailing issue I mentioned earlier while using the 'Fastest' response time setting, I just found this:

We did very occasionally notice that selecting the ‘Fastest’ mode whilst in-game could introduce a quite visible ‘rainbow trail’ at high speeds. This is not a normal artifact and can be removed by running the monitor under the default ‘Faster’ mode for a minute or so and switching back.
http://www.pcmonitors.org/monitor-reviews/samsung-s27a750d

Tonight I am going to test this to make sure the issue is resolved by switching settings for a couple minutes.

Yes but that same review says that there is very little difference between Faster and Fastest and is not worth it. I even asked the question down the bottom of the page. So I am gonna keep it on Faster as that is best.
