How bad would this suck? I am speechless. :(

A Utah man who won a $380,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store chain's contest says he crashed the sports car six hours after he got it. KSL-TV reports the lime green Murcielago Roadster will head to a Las Vegas body shop Wednesday for repairs, days after David Dopp won it from Maverik stores' "Joe Schmo to Lambo" contest.

Jalopnik has an article up on their website right now that seems to indicate that this guy may have intentionally crashed the car for the insurance money since he could not pay for the taxes on it.

That is why most prizes have a cash option... taxes on high ticket items are a bitch. He probably could have sold that Lambo pretty quick for 330-350K and been able to pay the tax man.

I wonder if he realized he could just auction the car off or something. Best thing about it is that if he doesn't get the full resale price of it he can declare that as a loss and negate the tax on the difference.

But yeah, that'd be about $100k in taxes, some "free" car you won.

He didn't own it long enough for auction, lol, probably barely could afford the insurance that morning too.

I wouldn't have even driven the car. I'd have sold it immediately. Never been that much of a car guy, so long as it lasts a long time and gets good mileage that's all I need.

Could have purchased an entire house in one fell swoop.

Probably what I would have done, paid off all outstanding debts, and just be debt free, plus would easily have more than enough to sock away for retirement.

You guys are crazy. No way that car is in my name, and I don't drive it at least once. Probably would have been on the track too.

This is something thats always been difficult for me to grasp being a Canadian.

If we win something here, we win it. Period. No taxes on winning lotterys, cash or prizes

I don't understand winning in the US. You don't really win anything, you're really just getting 60% off coupons.

This really sucks. The world sucks. Why is it that the awesomer cars usually get the crash and burn syndrome? Oh yeah, because the drivers can't handle the awesomeness. This is why the majority can't--- shouldn't have nice things, leave it to the [H] car crowds only. Sheesh. First Ferraris, then a Lambo, what's next? A One-77?!

Same goes here too, we don't get burdened by taxes and when we win something, we really own it.

Dude theres no grasping needed. That how our government works. Its ran by a bunch of criminals, what do you expect? The government doesn't even make money, they borrow from "the fed", which is not part of the government at all. meh...

Talk about getting a car you can't handle . . . . .

Lambos have always been one of those cars that handle on the edge of crashing.
I've always wanted to rent one at some point in the future, but a situation like this keeps me from doing it.

Yeah, Canadian gov is effed too. Guess thats why we get along so well. Same big brothers lol

Unlike how Steam is apparently offering a true up payment, this contest left the tax burden to the winner and boom! There is another Jalopnik article about how the winner wanted to sell his new prize to Leno.

I guess he should have just taken it to Carmax.

The jalopnik guys also say winning the lambo means he would have to pay 100K in taxes:eek: Damn government....

Seems like a poorly written article to me. (hey, I know you didn't write it...)

" He was reportedly barreling down a 35 mph section of icy road at 40-50 MPH. "
So, 5 to 15 over the speed limit is "barreling"?

"Keep in mind that he is a professional driver."
Professional? The dude drives a Frito-Lay truck. He isn't a race car driver. His name isn't Andretti.

It's just a car. The money is so much more important.

Don't get me wrong, I like cars and all, and consider myself a bit of a car guy, but in this case that's A LOT of money for a car.

Besides, I don't think I could drive that thing. I'd feel so obnoxious and embarrassed coming down the road in a loud, bright colored obnoxious sports car.

I'd prefer something a little more low key that doesn't draw attention. I hate bling.

I'd not drive it at all, as to not reduce it's value, and then put it up for sale immediately.

Wasn't that a good thing? Apparently, he couldn't afford to insure the car, so he crashed it. Hoping that the car is considered totaled and collect $300,000. He practically lost his house insuring the car.

Of course, the vast majority of lotteries in Canada are run by the government. Just playing is a form of taxation.

Actually, in most countries (again except US) the taxing responsibility is on the side which gives away the prize. So when you win something, it is already taxed.

And they have it right IMHO. It's better to have the winnings with taxes included, then you won't wind up with situations like this.

So it would be better to force him to pay taxes on the car right away, which he wouldn't have been able to afford, which would have forced him to sell it right off the bat.

How does someone in a buttfuck county afford insurance on a Lamborghini? #confused

If he really wanted to total the car to cash in on the insurance, he sure didn't try hard enough. I don't think that is even close to being $250k in damage to the card... He really needed to hit something that took out the engine.

Not that I'm condoning insurance fraud....

This is no different than idiots who have never handled more than $100 in their lives winning the lottery and in a couple of years blowing it all and actually owing more than they won. Clearly this fool has never dealt with a vehicle like this, so guess what?

No,

I'm talking about any prizes having taxes already paid by the organization issuing the prize, that way there wool be no winnings sticker shock.

He meant have the store pay the taxes and give out a real prize.

Wouldn't matter. Say his taxes on the lambo are $100,000 and the organization pays those taxes. The IRS would see that as a gift as well so the guy would have to report income of $100,000 as well as the $380,000 FMV of the car, and then get taxed on that.
