Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Is it just me (hint: it's not) but does this game seem kinda boring / lacking in the longevity department after playing it for a long time? I feel like I've seen most of what it has to offer after playing these past 2 weeks. Curious about [H]'s thoughts on this.

FPS GENRE, Y U GETTIN SO STALE?

Have you been playing all the modes or a different role? Some servers also don't have every map in rotation.

I feel I still haven't explored every aspect of conquest even. Barely touched rush, and haven't TDM, SDM, or squad rush.

Actually that is a good point, I've mainly played Conquest... I suppose I should try playing more Rush now :D I've played about 15 hours with engineer, 15 with assault, and about 10 with support.

Also give vehicles a try maybe, it is another dimension to the game.

Recon also in BF3 can be used in a non sniping role (if that is why you've been avoiding them), especially if you use the non class specific SMG unlocks.

I feel like I pimp this game a lot, but give ArmA 2/OA a try. The developers are dedicated to the PC platform and the community, and with the relatively easy-to-use editor and huge mod community, the game never gets stale IMO.

Definitely an underrated game. And they are developing ArmA 3 for a summer 2012 release.

I just remembered that I got a free cdkey for ArmA2 back when Green Man Gaming had a key giveaway a few months ago. Maybe I'll load it up and see what it's about

Yup Arma 2 PISSES all over this game but i still enjoy bf3 though for a quick 10min run around and shoot like a headless chicken game session :)

Just bought BF3. My first impressions after playing for a couple of hours: I like it and so far I think it's a worthy successor to the BF series. I personally like the whole browser-based setup. These are my only complaints about BF3:

- Intermittent CTDs with Battlelog citing something about lost connection or connection error.
- Being forced to use stock weapons against guys that have level-gazillion upgrades.
- The text chat window sucks and I have been killed because of it.
- Mortars.

If you play CO-OP before playing MP, You can unlock badass guns for MP before even stepping into the fray.

The CO-OP unlocked guns are like HACKS when you are level 1 in MP.

Oooh, interesting. I didn't even know about co-op.

I just tried launching a co-op game. Game loaded and then it CTD'd.

Launched again; managed to play a little while and racked up some points before we failed the objective.

While waiting for the map to load again... it CTD'd.

I'm sensing a trend here. :D

The starter weapons are just as good as the final unlocks.

The starter weapons are the final unlocks...for each different faction to use the others', that is. :p

Honestly, overall the only really "cheap" upgrade I've seen is the IRNV. Stuff like the flashlights are kind of cheap but mostly more annoying. I actually don't encounter too many people using them regularly.

Both games are fun IMO but if you want something deeper then ArmA 2 is what you want.

It's actually really funny to hear people talk about "rubber-banding" because for a long time that was a big issue in ArmA 2 but lately it's been all but fixed.

What's the minimum number of players you can set for a BF3 server? Can you make the round start with just 1 player?

Does anyone know in more detail how reactive armor works? It seems a tank with autoloader will out slug a tank with reactive armor, so it doesn't seem very effective.

Pretty sure reactive armor only absorbed rockets and not tank shells. It's pretty situational but nice. It's pretty funny to see engineers bitching that they hit you dead on with a rocket and it did nothing. :D

I'm going to need some more research on this it seems. I've been trying it in place of autoloader, but I've noticed my offensive output to be worse and my armor vs armor results being worse. While at the same time not noticing really any difference in survivability, it did seem to protect me once from a C4 jeep attack, but that might have also just been because he did not hit me cleanly. Also someone mentioned earlier on AA vehicles it doesn't seem to prevent 1 hits from TV missiles, so I'm wondering about the overall usefulness of this compared to say the autoloader, or even maintenance or proximity.

Does it actually degrade like in the description says?

Also does it only protect in the areas depicted visually?

Change the characteristics to be more similar to thermal optics on vehicles.

Thermal optics on vehicles are more sensitive to light sources than regular vision (even muzzle flash will obscure the screen), as opposed to less. This actually can be also done in conjunction with tweaking the characteristics of flashlights, have them more blinding than current against IRNV, the same vs. high magnification scopes, and less vs. other 1x or less scopes.

Thermal Optics also have much more limited range in terms of highlighting enemies.

To understand the balance issue of IRNV, ask yourself what are the disadvantages? Also compare it other 1x zoom type scopes, Holo or RDS, what are the disadvantages vs. advantages?

Seems to take longer to ironsight it on some guns

So I just top fragged 17-1 on metro rush with MAV. Sweet game.

Enjoying it still, it is samey and I feel that BC2 worked better for squadplay

For those who may have missed it:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/11/02/battlefield_3_single_player_performance_iq_review/1

This is an excellent breakdown of the graphics settings, as well as performance on various cards. What I found most useful was the discussion of the two AA techs and the two ambient occlusion techs for shadowing.

First thing I'm going to do next time I play is fix my visual settings by disabling MSAA, maxing out FXAA, and testing the difference in performance between HBAO & SSAO to see which I like better on my 560 Ti.

With how BF3 setup it would really benefit from a "commander type" mode actually in terms of coordination much more so than in BF2 (which at its peak in pubs mostly devolved into ability spam and spot spam). A lot of the weapon systems require comboing to maximize their effectiveness, but there really is no way to know what your teammates are using.

For instance with guided shells, I wouldn't use that if no one is laser designating. But at the same time people won't laser designate if no one is using laser guided weapons. Same with the javelin, the stinger and RPG is generally more effective without laser guiding. You have to choose your loadout before you know if someone will be using a SOFLAM, CITV, or Laser painter. And if no one uses a complementary weapon system, you just wasted that slot.

Coordinating attack chopper loadouts in pubs is course another separate issue as well.

Speaking of coordination, when my squad leader gives us directives to attack something, how the hell am I supposed to know what's being indicated? Does something show up on the minimap?

Edit: Dice better ban everyone of those cheaters, to be honest, anyone over level 30-35 is probably not legit, anyone wither a better then 7-10/1 K/D is probably not legit and both groups should be banned.

I'm level 45 , I played 74 hours and my K/D is a sad 0,818 so I don't cheat ....but contrary to the one who cheat I give ammo and revive peoples. But now I'm working on my K/D, it was 0.71 few days ago

I am totally missing the commander stuff lately...

spotting, UAVs, the ammo/repair crate....specially the ammo crate.

It is really needed.

it is because the game has no depth and get stale because the lack of skill involved when you have all these gadgets that just make you better without actually being better.

It is run-n-gun and that get boring fast

I can pretty much only stand to play about 2 rounds a day because the game just lacks something, it doesn't feel or play anywhere near the same as the older BF games. it is on par with BC2 and games like COD are what lead FPS games to the cluster fuck fest they are.

I played 74 hours when I reach level 45 last Saturday, since then I have not play, I lost the interest, funny, I played 10 times more hours in BF2, somes maps are plain boring.

There's an outline in the shape of 4 inward pointing arrow-ish things (awesome description, I know) on an objective if your squad leader wanted you to attack / defend it. It's really not that obvious. Whenever I'm squad leader I just 'order' the most likely target and get a point bonus for 'ordering' something that my squadmates were going to probably attack anyway.

What do you expect? For DICE to actually not port this game to the PC? It was made for consoles, that's why we're missing so much needed stuff from BF3. It's true, this is BFBC3.

I 1000000000000% agree, I've gotten somewhat bored with the game. I put almost 400 hours into bf2 and I didn't get bored at all with it. This game is missing a few key elements that BF2 had. One thing I noticed is, in BF2 you could sit in a spot and snipe all day long if that's what you felt like doing, in BF3(BFBC3) you cannot do that as a mortar will be flung your way within a few seconds. It just seems you 'have' to play the game in a run-n-gun style rather than your own.

its a noob adapted console game.
and not a true sequel to bf1942 nor BF2.
How come such a bad minimap was done?
4 man squads, come on that is so limited.
Physics makes this game what it is, but the mw3 adaption kinda sucks
and the bugs, and the auto assist aim for noobs

take me time to find a server that is actually worth playing on, most just have so many noobs they make the game a utter sour experience.

The squad system needs to be fixed big time. I know it was a last-minute thing, but there are some major issues with it. The other night when I was playing there were 4 of us on the team, and two were in a squad. I wanted to join their squad, but the only thing it would fucking let me do is be in a 2-person squad with the other non-squad guy. I could not forcibly join the other squad. Eventually, the one guy left, and every time I hit "Find Squad" (because, again, it didn't give me the option to just join their squad outright) it said "Squads all full, waiting to find one to join"...Are you fucking kidding me? A 2 out of 4 squad is "full"? I couldn't even be in a squad by myself, let alone join the only fucking squad on my team. So basically the game forced me to run around on my own the entire match. Next match wasn't any better, same issue.

Another unrelated issue I have noticed is that between matches/sessions it seems like it will not remember my previous loadout. I want to use the M9 Tactical and most of the time it will automatically switch it back to the M1911 or something when I go back in the game. What is up with that? How hard is it for the game to remember my fucking preferences?

You realize you CAN join a squad right? It's just DERP.

Steps:
Click leave squad - wait until it actually show's you've left it
Click on squad you want to join
At the bottom, the very bottom, barely visible is a Join button, click it.
That's it!

Game needs spawn protection of some kind at the very least. Spawn killing happens like crazy in this thing even when people are trying to be careful and NOT do it.

I think there needs to be better spawning logic overall. I've spawned 2 inches in front of an enemy and vice versa... just makes no sense. This is of course not when spawning on a squad mate.

The only thing that has really bugged me a few times is when I go in to customize my load out, and no matter where I spawned previously, clicking "deploy" while still on the load out screen will stick me back at the main base. However, if I back out of the menu and back to the spawn screen and then click deploy, it puts me wherever I last selected as my spawn point.

It's somewhat minor, but still freaking annoying. Especially when we have the other team pinned on the other side of the map and snipers are too busy using the transport helo's as their personal throw-away taxi's.
