Ubiquiti Unifi Questions...

Hi all,

Well first off, I stumped up the extra cash for the Unifi-LR and so far I`m glad I did.

I don`t think there is a single corner of the house now where I don`t get full strength signal on most, if not all devices, and if it isn`t full strength, it`s only one step down. Good call!

Now i have a question, is it possible to use more than one system to manage the Unifi? At present the main PC upstairs does the job, but on occasion it would have been more than convenient for me to be able to see what`s going on on my laptop. I did try it on more than one machine but from what I can see, it (the AP) will only allow `adoption` by one system, if I try to add it to another, it just isn`t found until I `un-adopt` from the original system.

Any ideas??

Thanks

You can't use the software on multiple computers at once. You can, however, access the interface from other computers. Say you installed it on "PC1". As long as PC1 is turned on, you can access the interface from any other computer on the network by going to https://PC1:8443/manage. I have the software on my server since it's always on. You don't actually need the software running for the AP to work, just to configure it.

Aaaahhhh, exactly what I needed to know, thanks.

That is a bit of a PITA though.... Really wanted to avoid having a system on all the time but if I can find a low enough power system (fit-pc2) that won't break the bank, I'll have my RDP system back as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again

You don't need the software running at all for the AP to keep working as is. You only need the software to control and make changes to the AP.

Oh yeah, I know that, it`s running now with no system running.

My question is, when someone has an issue with connectivity or whatever in say the living room, i have to go upstairs to fire that pc up, then play about, come back down and see what`s going on, then go back up to continue playing about.... etc....etc

I know Ubiquiti obviously have their reasons for not building their AP`s as per other vendors (i.e. log directly into the AP) most notably, I`d say performance and scalability, but it wold be soooo much simpler to be able to log straight into `whatever` and be able to see the AP on my tablet/phone/laptop etc...

Now I know that this is just little old me with just one simple AP, and if I had hundreds of them to manage, then the route Ubiquiti have taken is clearly the winner.

Also, If I could get hold of a low powered enough system (fit-pc2 running @ around 5watts) I could run that permanently and as you pointed out with the above "https://PC1:8443/manage", I could log into that either as shown or via RDP.

I guess for the time being, it`s all good, up to now, the only real issue I`ve had has been during the initial setup which is, short of a little tweaking, complete.

Anyways, thanks again for your input:D

@BigBadAl Have you mounted your AP on the ceiling or is it sitting on a table?

OP, you need to keep in mind that the Unfi was/is designed as business device and not directed at the home user market.

For the cash the Unfi is an incredible product, but you have to understand what market it was originally intended and designed for.

Hahaha, errrm, no, not yet...

At the moment it`s sort of wedged on top of my old WRT54G AP at a `suitable angle` to evenly and scientifically distribute the signal throughout my property.:D

That said, I consistently get great coverage all over, up and down, and in all corners of the house, even in places that, considering it`s orientation, would be considered `behind` the AP!

I did some rough measuring up last night for ceiling mounting the AP but sods law would dictate that that position is directly above the CH Boiler!

I plan on sorting it at the weekend.

PICTURESS YAAAAAAAA

Maybe, I`ll see what I can do....;)

Oh, Undoubtedly, I really cannot fault the AP IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. It is a truly fantastic bit of kit. I was just looking for an easy solution, but as I`ve already said this is for me looking for a conveniet way to manage ONE SINGLE AP. If I had more, maybe even hundreds, the way Ubiquiti have done the management is perfect. I`m just being picky!

Thanks

As far as I know, no, it`s just an .msi/.exe

Not sure if it could be ported or not. There is a Mac version on the ubnt site but if you`re running a WHS, it should run on that fine, although with you enquiring about a readynas, I`m assuming you (like me) don`t have a WHS!?

I ended up using a small cheap netbook to run the SW on, I also use the same netbook to rdp into should the need arise, works ok for me.

these units get power over the ethernet cable, right? i've never had a PoE device before so n00b question: if you just plug an ethernet cable from any switch or router into this thing will it work, or do you need some special power input on the other end?

TIA

They require a POE injector OR a poe switch, a normal off the shelf switch is not poe, you need to buy one that specifically sates it's poe.

If you have just one or 2 ap's that you want to power, i would just buy 1-2 injectors like i did. Except i bought 3 one per ap ( 2 ) and one for my cisco phone.. Each one was 9$ off ebay they are 48V poe injectors.

Dash.

Are the Unifi's STANDARD 802.3af POE? I thought they were the oddbal 24v POE like the rest of the Ubiquiti gear. They include their power injectors or adapters for standard POE are available as well.

You need to use the POE injector. One cable from the switch goes into it, another cable goes out from it to your access point. The injector gets power from a regular AC outlet.

No they are not .3af compliant. They are 24V.

Doesn't the 3 pack include the poe injectors ? and the singles don't ?

BTW the 24V ones are even cheaper :)

None of them are standard POE compliant, and they all shound have come with the proprietary injectors. I did hear of some stories of the initial release of the Unifi AP's, that some vendors were breaking open 3paks and selling the individual AP's w/o any accessories.

thats fucking horse shit! what a bunch of douche's. Id order right from ubnt.ca then :)

AHHH I love my 9550 all standard poe :)

My single came with the injector. In Canada I used xagyl communications to order from.

thanks everyone for the replies. they do not seem to have a lot of resellers (none that i've heard of before anyway), and the warning about making sure the seller includes the injectors will save me a lot of hassle and rage later :) thanks all!

I've been looking at getting one of these units, heard they are coming out with a pro version that has the 5ghz antenna as well as gigabit conection, think i'll wait for it and buy once it is out.

About DAMN time... I never understood why the oddball proprietary POE design on the existing products. It has to be more cost effective to build in industry standard power switching than manufacturing outboard injectors.
