HP ZR2740w - 27" IPS - 2560x1440

$680 shipped is a steal for that resolution.

Unfortunately it is probably the same exact panel as in the U2711. The AG is particularly annoying.

Well they say that zr30w ag is better then the dells, you think they made it worse on this one?

I guarantee the panel is not the same as the Dell. The backlight and panel typically come as a module, with the panel specifically configured for a particular backlight type. I'm sure that the AG coating is going to be identical. If it's an LG IPS, it's the same coating. The only differences come from variations in amount applied in some individual or batch applications.

On a 30" display the dot pitch is slightly larger, so the AG grain is relatively smaller. That would account for how it is "better."

Actually, a google search says the the LG LM270WQ1-SDDA panel IS the same model # used in the U2711. As you stated though, backlighting is different. The AG coatings look the same to me, and I've had both.

Seems like it would be another year though before they actually straighten the AG coating out. Really till LG decides to make a new panel. Which i am sure on there next one there wont be as much coating. I own an LG now i dont even see any AG coating period i know its there but not present to my eye at all.

Since we're on [H]ard|OCP and not issy|OCP, if you really hate the AG you can take it off.

Anyone with this monitor able and willing to measure and post the actual power (Watt) usage?

Was gonna do that originally but can't find my damn Killavolt and don't feel like paying for another.

:/

If I find it I'll post though.

:)

thx

I'm waiting on my order and will post my findings. Question though: which connection cables are in the box? Would be nice to be able to actually use it once it arrives ;-)

It comes with a DVI, and Displayport cable.

Yea a dual link DVI (which is what I'm using) and displayport cable. Packing was very good and the monitor and stand are a snap to attach. If you want to use an LCD arm with it and the quick detach adapter then be careful though. The screws that hold the adapter to the stand appear to be lock tighted in or something, it makes it difficult to remove the screws and easy to strip them.

Anyone able to measure minimum wattage ie kill-a-watt with the zr2740w set to lowerst brightness and contrast?

Basedon costcentral's return policy, I don't think they are a good place to buy monitors from:

"Please note that due to manufacturer requirements, there are some items that are not returnable for any reason. Some examples would be items from the following companies or categories; APC, IBM, Lenovo, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Primera, Xerox, Lexmark, Samsung, Panasonic, RIM, Polycom and all Printers/Photocopiers. Defective items will be serviced or replaced by the manufacturer."

Amazon has what looks to be a promo version of it for $674 and $23 shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-XW476A8-AB...4P0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319410447&sr=8-1

They list it as the "HP Promo ZR2740W Le" however, and don't list that many specs for it. Apologies if I asked much the same question earlier re: another monitor, but is this the exact same monitor as the ZR2740W? It's a bit cheaper.

Thanks

I guess I'd probably sell it on eBay instead if I couldn't stand the AG or something. TFT's review wasn't glowing at all. They seemed to focus in on the lack of an OSD. My NVIDIA driver contains all those settings, why do I need an OSD? I hardly use the ones on my current monitors, actually once they're set, I never use them.

Am I missing something here?

Just ordered the smart buy version from Amazon. Will post my feedback after I've used it for a bit.

could someone with this monitor plug an xbox into it with a passive adapter and report back on what happens? thanks!!!

I have been using it for a few days. I love it. colors are great.

And with overdrive to max in CCC it actually cuts the blur in half. Pretty decent even for FPS games like TF2 etc.

Also input lag must be very good, because I didn't notice a difference coming from a fast TN.

Why would anyone use this monitor for an Xbox?

You would be way better off with a 1080p monitor that actually have an HDMI input. No need to break the bank for a 2560x1440 that your xbox will never use.

it would be on my computer 90% of the time.

xAlex,
How's the AG on this monitor? Do you prefer AG monitors over glossy like ACD?

I have an NVIDIA card, so I don't have overdrive. How is it with overdrive off for gaming?

Sorry 'bout so many questions. This monitor is very interesting, I'm trying to figure out if it will work for me before I plunk down $700. Thanks.

me too. i am seriously thinking about buying this monitor. price is cheap compared to acd. guys, is this monitor as good as or not, to an acd (apple cinema display) ???

imo if it can be fed by an xbox in any capacity, it's a must buy for me. i've had terrible luck with every dell panel i've tried, and this is 200$ cheaper (!!)

By AG you mean anti-glare? I don't mind it at all but then again I am in a fairly dark corner of the room with no sun directly on my screen.

Well without overdrive, it's like any other 60hz screen out there if you spin around too fast it gets blurry. With it on it looks a lot like my 75hz screen I used to have, better but not 120hz better.

Edit: I played Mass Effect 2 all week and I have had no problems with excessive blurring.

I do not play much FPS anyway, i'm more of a RTS/MMO gamer and for that I love the color/high resolution. 108 ppi is impressive I have to say.

I was thorn between this one and the Samsung S27A950 but 3D is not quite mature(Glasses, Driver issues, etc) yet and If I do go 3D@1080p it will be on a projector for some real immersion and the odd 3D movie.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, by AG I mean Anti-Glare. I agree, 3D is not quite there and I'm not going to worry about that right now. I am a FPS gamer and would like to use this monitor for that but primarily to do some desktop publishing.

I just don't want it to look like I'm looking through a dirty glass. I want the colors to be bright an vibrant and the text to be clear. Is that really too much to ask? (it would seem so from reading reviews of AG coated high-end monitors).

What Overdrive?
Do you mean normal overclocking?
How does that affect blur?

It's in CCC under "My digital flat panels" then "LCD Overdrive" and you can set it from 0 to 200 and it claims this "Improves the quality of fast moving objects during video playback on certain LCD panels."

I believe a lot of monitors actually do this hardware side and thus this has no effect but the ZR2740w does not and so it makes a substantial difference and cuts the blur in half if not more.

I tested it in windows moving open windows around in circle quickly with the setting off and then at max. Huge difference but as I said before it does not become 120hz smooth. more in the range of a 75~85hz smooth.

Good info, thanks. Can you notice any unwanted dark overshoot as a result of the Catalyst overdrive?
