Dark Souls Thread

Once I opened up quite a few shortcuts around Firelink, Undead Pariah, and the Berg the game became quite a bit more fun. Found an undead vendor in the berg. She only has arrows. No bow :(

The first merchant you find should have a bow, the undead guy that's outside sitting on the ground putting things into a basket and talking to himself.

If you mean the woman in the sewers, you're a bit ahead.
Here is a video showing you where he is:

I never got the drake sword, I didn't know about it until it was too late. By the time I found out, the dragon had already flown the coup. I've been using my halberd since the very beginning of the game, and i'm pretty close to the end. I upgraded it to lightning +5 and I havent found anything the entire game that I like as well. You get used to the range with it, not to mention the damage, and I'm not willing to give that up. I like it way better than the lightning spear. Boss weapons really suck this time around, IMO. Quelaags sword is okay, but the rest are crap. Sword of artorias will be amazing...when you're level 200.

Like I said, the trick is to cheese them into falling off the cliff, so you don't actually do anything except run around for a second to get them to chase you. They might be out of your league if you were actually trying to kill them, but in this case that's perfectly fine.

^shows basically exactly what I did^

I need to do this. Anyway know of a good farming location I can use to get the 20K souls needed to open the door though? :p

I am a level 23 Cleric using Astora's Straight Sword, Dragon Crest Shield, and Elite Knight Armor + Fang Boar Helm. My main problem is that my damage isn't scaling well. I couldn't get the Drake Sword because I accidentally killed the first vendor in the game that sells the bow, and not a single bow has dropped for me in 15 hours of game time... :( I've been able to kill every Black Knight I have run into though, plus Havel and the Stone Demon.

Moonlight Butterfly was a train wreck for me because Astora's Straight Sword hits the rocks on every single swing. I think the boss landed 6 or 7 times before I did enough damage to it. I am a pro at dodging those attacks now though :D

yeah that knight scared the hell out of me when i first came across him. led him back to the red dragon to take care of him for me.

Dark knights are a joke with 100% phys dmg shield and relatively high stamina, literally a joke, just block their swings and attack, be careful to wait during the two hit combos before you swing as your attacks don't stun them like normal mobs

Those demons in demons shrine or whatever are a real challenge, the ones with the huge demons axe. 100% phys dmg shield? Hah, not against those guys lol, and timing their attacks are very challenging at least for me

My current fav weapon is the dragonslayer spear, have it at +4 with 37 str and 37 dex

Yea, it's the ninja ring. You get it by joining the forest covenant and then going under the waterwheel in blighttown to meet Shiva. If you attack Shiva, his invisible ninja bodyguard will pop out and you have to kill it to get the ring. Just make sure you're prepared to take out both of them and then you'll probably have to pay for atonement at oswald if you want to get back into the forest covenant. AFAIK, it doesn't do anything regarding equipload, it just replaces your roll with a faster flip.

I've been getting confirmation in another forum that the ring does indeed allow you to run at full speed with 50% max load in addition to the flips. General consensus is that it's the best ring in the game. Really gotta get my hands on this bad boy...

Tips, anybody?

My problem is I shoot/attack anything that moves, already lost forest covenant and frampt because of this, blah

I just joined the forest covenant, then killed the ninja near the keep where Alvina is to get the ring. That will betray the covenant obviously.

Yeah, I just joined the covenant, walked around the building and 'kicked' the ninja off of the cliff. Reload game and the ring is sitting on the ground to loot.

I'm having trouble getting the Drake Sword. I can get to the underside of the bridge with no problem. I generally stay back near the room and shoot from there. Every time I shoot the dragon he flies down for a moment before going back to his perch. I've put 30 arrows into his tail and the tail still doesn't fall off! I'm playing a Thief with DEX 16. What am I doing wrong? I originally aimed at the red part of the tail since it was a bigger target. Then I died b/c I didn't know the skeleton was further down the bridge. Next time I focused all my shots on the spike at the end of his tail.

help!

Aim for the barbed area at the tip of the tail. It took me about 40 arrows at that area to have it fall off.

With 16 dex it shouldn't take that many shots, my dex was something similar I and only needed about 15 shots. Nonetheless, just keep shooting it. Doesn't really matter where, as long as it shows that you're doing damage when the arrow connects you're getting closer with every shot.

The tail has 200hp according to wikia. If your bow has a low range it will do very little damage at that distance so I would shoot him once and when he flies close you try to shoot the tail again. Doesn't matter where in the tail you shoot him.

i tried to get the tail via melee him so many time... and to top it off i killed the npc before i knew of the sword. this game makes me want to break something... definitely not a relaxing way to spend time

I managed to get the sword last night. Now I want to kill the dragon. I really want those 10k souls so I can quickly bump my STR so I can use the Drake Sword quicker. I've tried a few different things so far, but not sure if any are going to work.

First, I went to the corner down near the rats (after clearing them out) and shot the dragon over 150 times. I realized he was healing himself, so I wasted all of that time. Next I tried standing at the staircase on the bridge and shooting him, then running below when he approached. The only problem there is that I was only dealing 6 points of damage per hit.

Maybe I need to give up on him?

Okay, I'm going to give up on the dragon for now because I found a better way to get the souls I need, In only a matter of minutes I got enough to bump my strength from 10 to 16. I'm now rocking the Drake Sword.

Here's what you do:

First, you have to open the shortcut under the bridge to the Undead Burg bonfire.I had to run partway down the bridge toward the dragon to get it to open. I died a fiery death, but the shortcut is now open.

For this quick farming technique all you do is:
  1. Start at the bonfire
  2. run up the ladder into the room under the bridge
  3. With your shield up, run up the stairs and partially out onto the bridge- there are going to be 6 skeletons here. You want to protect yourself from them and only get on the bridge enough to get the dragon to breathe fire
  4. Immediately run down the stairs to avoid the fire blast

Boom- you just got 300 souls. The entire process only takes 30 seconds from bonfire to bonfire, so just repeat as needed.

I didn't use the drake sword on my first character, but I started a new character and decided to get the drake sword. I felt like it almost trivialized the game up until Sen's Fortress. I was quite familiar with the areas which helped a lot, but I was glad I didn't use it the first time.

As a Thief and a player who's having a lot of challenge with this game, I have no problem using the Drake Sword.

There's a very simple trick to killing that hellkite. Go up the ladder where those sewer rats were, just below him. Keep going up the winding stairs till you get to the top of the tower. Assuming you're able to kill that black knight, look around and you'll see a small section of the tower that has been destroyed or weathered away, allowing you to walk onto it. You should be able to see the hellkite from there. Shoot him with 1 arrow, and he'll fall through the ground to his death.

Otherwise, you'll have to come back for him when you're stronger to beat him legitimately.

From what I've read, He'll just keep healing himself, if you want to kill him you have to melee it or such but Its' extremely hard and you have to be higher lv.

For 10 k souls, you can get that in under 3 or so minutes at the Forest doing the 7k souls strategy when you open that door.

??? Can you share?

Edit : Nevermind! Found it!

So I finally got around to playing again, and I must admit that Blight Town is possibly the most annoying place ever. It's not even hard...its just an extreme level of annoyance lol. Anyway, I managed to beat the boss there, and even moved into the demon ruins and killed Ceaseless Discharge too. He was pretty easy once I figured out you can use the little hallway to bait him into attacking you while you just roll and smack his tenticle. I guess I'll work my way back toward the fortress that opened after I rang the bell.

The door requires 20k souls to buy the key...
great plan

Entering Blighttown from valley of drakes lets you skip the first half of blighttown(the more annoying part to me). I'm planning on doing that next game.

Don't you need the key for the door from INSIDE Blight town?

Wow I wish I had known that! The first part was definitely worse than the second. You would miss out on some decent items though (you know you want the ninja suit and katana for lol rp purposes).

Also, I am loving the Claymore. I have it upgraded to +5 right now and it does some decent damage. It's not as much as the zweihandler, but I find its move set to be much more versitile. The thrust with R2 is amazing.

Yeah, it is a great plan. It may take you an hour or two to get that 20k souls, but you can earn 20k souls back in about 3 minutes in there. Its the best place to farm souls in the whole game without cheating.

It's worth every one of the 20k souls for that key. You can farm enough souls there in an hour to reach a level high enough to beat the game if you really wanted to. It also makes upgrading gear a joke early on.

I really enjoyed farming in the tomb of the giants doing Nito runs with other players. It works out to be almost 30k per run, and it's not boring and monotonous like the forest run. About half the time you'll get invaded by either other players or NPCs and collect another 25k on top of the 30k. Look for my soul sign right by the last bonfire there.

Had an epic session (for me) last night. I started at the bonfire in Undead Burg, used the shortcut to the dragon bridge. On a single run without dying or returning to a bonfire I was able to kill the armored boar, get to the church, kill the Heavy Knight, and took down the Channeler with a bow.

Too bad I didn't know there was a 3rd undead guard and a second flock of zombies- they ambushed me and took me down before I could escape, heal, or fight back.

Thats a good run for one night man! That whole undead burg area took me 2 or 3 play sessions.

Thanks, man.

I do have to say that the Boar was much easier than I thought. First I cleared out the closest low level enemies by getting them to attack me by shooting them with a bow. Once that was done, I shot the Boar, which made him charge me. I just ran down the staircase and into the tower stair area. He's so big he can't fit there. He snorted and huffed at me for a little while before walking away dejectedly. That's when I backstabbed him. Rinse/repeat->death.

The first time I got to the boar, he just rammed the hell out of me, but he ended up standing on the fire next to me until he died :p

Finally downed the Gaping Dragon. Wasn't hard just took like 10 minutes (I took it slow - strike strike run away). Anyways he(it) dropped the Key to BlightTown. I can't seem to find my way.

Taurus Demon -> Bellfrey Gargoryles -> Carpa Demon -> Gaping Dragon(Demon w/e)

Where do I go from here?

Go back the way you came from Gaping Dragon, and through the hole in the gate in the area with two slimes and two rats. There's the door to Blighttown.
Apparently if you have master key you can use the door in New Londo ruins under Firelink Shrine and skip the first half of Blighttown.
