Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Announced for release on 11/11/11.

^^ at least we know that it will be fixed, regardless if they mess it up or not. And one day, i'll bet the folks at SureAI will end up working on another huge project like Nehrim except using the new tools.. oh that's going to be sweet!

the worst part was scaling.

very few if any hand placed items. one of the fun things about morrowind was once you found an item on a replay you could try to figure out how to get it with your lower level and get that added boost early on if you get it.

i still remember the entire layout and item placements of morrowind and i havnt played that game in years. like the chameleon ring at the bottom of a pond....

sure there are mods that fix lazy devs but they shouldnt be needed.

so i think ill be happier waiting a while for a mod to fix skyrim before i buy it.

Everytime I start a new playthrough of Morrowind GotY, I head over to Mournhold and pick up the Bi-Polar Blade, lol. I also get one of those random ebony longswords placed in Balmora and sell it to get my awesome Bonemould armor.

The level scaling was a bit silly, but it's wasn't that bad in Oblivion, IMO.

As for item placement, I don't think it's "lazy" at all to not expect the developer to hand-place thousands of items in such a huge and detailed world.

except when you play a game in which the developers (or modders, in the case of Nehrim--total conversion mod for Oblivion) hand place each item, the effect you feel from finding a hand-placed item is quite nice, IMO. One of my favorite examples, is finding gold nuggets in the bottom of a mountain riverbed. It's the little things which in my opinion are often the sweetest.

I think the level scaling was awful, downright terrible in fact. Neat, skeletons that took 3 swings to kill at level 5 take 25 swings at level 20. Bandits have so much glass armor, it isn't even worth your time to pick it all up after awhile. The levelling system could even make you less powerful each level if you didn't meta game the skills.

It's obviously lazy not to craft your game in the same fashion you did in Morrowind. There wasn't much in the way of unique items in Oblivion at all, other than the daedric quest items. Not to mention that 90% of the dungeons and caves were very similar to the last one you visited, and the next you'll visit.

Yup, Nehrim was great. It's the little details in a hiking simulator like this that bring you into the gameworld.

Oblivion did have unique items that were "hand placed," but because they leveled, they weren't necessarily more powerful than non uniques.

But from what I remember uniques in Oblivion were much more interesting due to the unique effects of certain items, like the thieves guild mask or that daedaric item that makes people go crazy. I really need to replay this, obviously can't remember the specifics anymore :p

I really can't wait to get a hold of this game. It looks like they really focused on the detail and fleshed out the world much more than oblivion. Oblivion was a great game, but it was missing the type of detail that was present in it's predecessor, Morrowind.

Can't wait :)

I think I'm done with Oblivion, officially retiring it. Strange NPC performance bug with newer AMD video cards (which somehow manifests its problem into CPU usage). Game is still too buggy even with all the awesome mods. I've put in a few thousand hours (actually haven't counted) in, and of my half my drive is devoted to 41 GB of data files (mods and original files).

Duke Patrick's combat mod has tempted me to come out of retirement. But with my current system, I think I'll just let it rest. Morrowind, Fallout, and soon to be Skyrim will take care of all my open world cravings. Goodbye Oblivion

FCOM is a performance killer in my case. So what I did was I installed Oblivion Warcry: New Dimension and WAC, with a few other mods it's still a great game. Saying that I pretty much don't think I'll be playing Oblivion much after Skyrim comes out since I'm pretty sure that a lot of the kickass stuff will make it's way to Skyrim after some months and I'm pretty sure vanilla Skyrim will be good enough to play for at least a hundred hours by itself.

What kind of bug are you experiencing? I haven't noticed anything different with my 6950s compared to my old GTX 285.

FCOM didn't seem to bother my system by much. I was just getting some nasty slowdowns when looking at NPCs. For testing purposes I even stripped all mods, and looked at the FPS when the emporer and his escorts came into the prison cell. I forget the number now, but it may have been 30-40 FPS or so. Internal cells while looking at NPC's hurt the frames more than looking at super high resolution textures + raevwd (Really Almost Everything Viewable When Distant) outside. Frames even jumped up when i looked away from NPCs. Fortunately 2 NPC's vs 10 on screen didn't seem to matter too much.

And of course there is the occasional crash to desktop... and after several hours of playing the game would stutter more and crash more. (though it may have something to do with having more than 100 files in the Data Files folder (subfolder stuff shouldn't matter). Saw a thread about how too much there causes some weird polling stutter).

The occasional crash to desktop is virtually unavoidable in all cases. Even vanilla Oblivion will crash once in a while. Saying that with a stable mod setup crashes should be fairly rare. And by rare only once every couple of hours. Oblivion is not known to be a stable game when pushed to the limit with mods.

I'm used to that. (as an aside I had a far worse time with Morrowind in the XP days, amazingly with windows 7 it very rarely crashes. Almost never now.). Back with Oblivion it's just that things get worse as my save progresses. Things start ok (aside from the frames) but slowly degrade until I just have to start a new game.

Yeah, I also get that dip when looking at NPCs, while annoying, it's far from a game-breaking bug. Pretty strange.

I cannot wait for the release!

I wish they would release system requirements and recommended hardware for PC

Tonight at 1 am EST G4tv is having a new 6-minute Skyrim demo video.

Should be on Gametrailers.

I hope they don't decide to delay the PC release at the last minute...I'm seeing a trend where they wait till 2-3 weeks until release and then all of a sudden announce that the PC version has been delayed...Arkham City did that

Bethesda has never done that... They seem to still have some love for PC.

Besides, we all know their not shy about buggy releases and patching it later, or letting the community fix the bugs. So no reason to delay! :D

Man I am looking forward to this game, the more trailers and in game reviews I see the better it gets. I figure that the game will launch with the typical Bethesda bugs, but I am confident it will still be a great game out of the box.

What I am really looking forward to is in 3-6 months when the really well done mods start rolling out.

My buddy and i watched all the footage we could find on the game last night, and most of my earlier concerns i'd voiced i don't think are really founded anymore. The game looks fucking sweet and it will definitely be amazing out of the box--especially if you play it with a controller.

The one thing i hope, is that they release a different UI for the PC, as well as have better textures too.

Even if they don't, mods will be sure to do that in short order.

It's hard to tell how the perk system is going to play out--i really hope that it adds the variety to combat that the games have been lacking--they haven't spent any time showing what they do or how they're used...so it's impossible to tell!

If it doesn't add that variety, then i'm certain there will be a combat mod down the road to add timed blocking, parrying, shield bash, and hopefully kick too. It'd also be nice to see localized damage, because those videos of archery where he's one-shotting dudes by just shooting center mass... bah!

Still tho, can't wait for launch day ^_^

Am I the only one that will not be playing this right away?

The main reason is being I am a huge BF fan. So I will probably dedicate the first 6 months after release to BF3, wait for Skyrim to get the mod community going, and DLCs, and then see what is the best way to play the game.

Probably. ;)

Ain't gonna stop me. In fact, BF3 and Skyrim will be perfect "complements" to each other for me. Two completely different games to switch back and forth to and from.

Good point! I guess I just want my first experience with Skyrim to be the best. So if mods are needed, should I wait? I'm sure I will break down and buy day 1 anyway LOL.

I think I will be doing the same at Chochomonkey, wait for BF3 to fall in price and possibly include the DLC.

i have one of those logitech controllers for my pc. I'm going to be playing it with that way first, since the UI was designed for that. i reckon i'll enjoy it much more that way, then when mods come out i'll play it with KB+M

I just can't see navigating those scrolling menus with a mouse...

Yeah.... I have a Xbox360 controller I can use if it is more ideal
