Apple SUCKS At Security

And this is why corporate use of Apple products will never happen except in select fields.

yanno for a device that is supposed to be "the next big thing in computing" it sure as fuck seems complicated... he's touching the sides, the other side, sliding a slider, opening the cover, etc etc.. oh just to turn it off and on a few times.

Nonsense.

It's all user error. Always and nothing but.

It "just works." Apple doesn't need to worry about virus security or anything else because their products are impervious.

What sort of nonsense is this you're posting, Steve?

;)

In other news, you can disable Siri when your phone is locked.

Comment says you can open apps in folders. Anybody tried this?

what, no brainwashed apple leg humpers defending apple yet? what gives?

just tried this on my dads 4.3.3 ipad2 and it doesn't work. guess its good he hasn't upgraded to ios5 yet. you can turn off smart cover unlocking which is what i'm guessing this is basicalling doing. pretty jacked up.

the hard staff and pretty much 99% of its users have that same mentality. and no biggy, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

THB i don't think people hate the products, as it just a normal PC (yes i said it... oh noes) its the software and mentality that comes with apple and its brainwashed zealots people cant stand.

mb air or mb pro would make a nice windows laptop, the hardware is nice, its just 2x the price it should be, and comes with an OS most stuff useful stuff doesn't work on.

yeah just a shame the masses actually screwed the normal apple users over.

no edit button and not to go off topic but I have yet to find a replacement for something I do on my pc that I can't do on a mbp and vice versa.

So far all the ultrabooks that have come out had to cut corners in some way, either using plastic or not using a full SSD. I was never interested in Macs before the Macbook Air, never interested in any of their stuff before the iPad in fact. The iPad though, turned out to be REALLY useful for me and replaced everything I used to do on my notebook. The Macbook Air is amazingly thin and light, and I've found that it turns out OSX really is easier in a lot of ways. (like printer setup - I have a network printer that I had to fight and claw to work with Windows. Having to turn it off and on, had to manually type the IP address into Windows under port settings for the printer with a port type of Minolta network printer. The Mac? It just found it, installed software by itself, and had it all set up.)

They aren't magical though - of course Apple has security holes too. At least this one doesn't seem too serious since you have to first have smart cover unlock turned on, then you have to be running this exact build of iOS, then you have to be in the app they want to use already before you go to the lock screen (because otherwise the guy is just left staring at icons unable to do anything). It's no 'Flaw in Flash allows website to remotely turn on your camera and microphone to record you without asking' like I read about the other day. Now THAT one worries me.

FAIL - I forwarded this to my boss who has an iPad 2 and a Smart Cover. Yes, the trick works but the applications are not responsive at all. So it seems that you can get in, but you can't do anything. Still broken code is broken. They need to fix this before a further exploit is found. Now that Siri bug seems pretty freakin serious.

the siri thing is not a bug.. there is an option in the settings to make siri not work when the phone is locked

Blasphemers! The Almighty Jobs is infallible! The Holy Apple are incapable of such acts! Such baseless accusations from heathens does not serve them well, only causing them to solidify the fact that they are infidels! Death to the non-believers! Glory to Apple! Hail Steve Jobs! Hail, Apple Triumphant! Hail, Apple Magnificent!

Sorry if I was too late to post this LOL

well, duh. Have they ever had any real security? :D

Didnt know hardocp had such hate for apple products.

Because this is mainly an overclocking and maximum performance forum, with small sections to low power usage etc. Apple make expensive, not exactly high end things that you cant in general overclock, do people go on about loving dell desktops? :p

Here is what I find some curious: Jobs was such a control freak and egomaniac that it probably contributed to his early demise yet Apple products have shit for security. You would think a company founded by someone as paranoid as Jobs would be really security conscience.

I didn't realize that dual socket Mac Pro workstations with FC storage wasn't high end.
Same goes for iMacs with high end mobile gpu's, ssd's, sandy bridge and 1440p lcds weren't high end?

You mean like the anti-Apple trolls? ;)

Annoying fanboys are annoying, but so are obnoxious trolls. And they are both just as convinced of their superiority.

That is such a wonky hack, it doesn't surprise me that it managed to get overlooked. Still, better than the HTC bug...

Yeah, that'll get fixed quickly.

They aren't, its STOCK parts. Would you pay me 60% more to buy a computer you couldn't overclock, with a junky OS? Would you call a 2600 (non k) high end? If I was buying another workstation, i'd buy something I could overclock and fit 4x GPUs in, not some overhyped dell. Switching from a 1p 4.2gh/z system (that cost a fraction as much) to one to a premade stock 2p system is painful :( (remember most things are still only a few cores, even in "high end" software those extra cores from the second CPU will do usually nothing, and if something needs an extreme load of core, it goes on GPU. The only real gain comes from max memory, but I still struggle to get up to 24gbs which fit on a 1p system, and extra PCI lanes, which they don't appear to use).

High end and "mobile" doesn't really go together, a 580m is less powerful than a GTX 460, yet costs a load more, and they probably don't even have those. For a desktop "high end workstation" computer, thats terrible and barely usable from experience for pretty much anything, and definately not "high end" things. Remember that this is STOCK. Overclocking the GPU would be a PITA too as the total thermal solution consists of a 1/2" slot at the top (those POS get hot) :p

So you can see why a stock computer doesn't get much love... Still can't see why anyone would want/buy them. Probably ignorance of better options.

While I agree with some points, people aren't buying Mac Pro's to overclock them. But I will say the that market for those is different than those who are buying to overclock and load up 4x GPU's. Junky OS is an opinion, I would call a 2600 a high end CPU despite the fact that you can't overclock it. HighEnd and Mobile do go together as they are no better alternatives in the mobile market besides the 6990 that came out after the iMacs.

Case in point, I consider my desktop to be considered highend even if it were at stock clocks. High end doesn't mean = overclocked.

If you're talking laptops, sure. "HighEnd" and mobile card in a desktop? Not really.

Hell i'd love to see a full-size gpu in an iMac but that aint gonna happen in its current form factor.

This really has little to do with the OS proper but the drivers. I have a network laser jet in the home office and we have TONS of network printers at work. At home I just install the driver, tell the installer I have a network printer, it finds it without doing anything else and works with all my Windows 7 machines perfectly. If I don't install the driver the Action Center will point to the correct driver but you have to download the driver and run the install. At work everything is setup in Active Directory, just locate the printer you want to print to, drivers install automatically, done, and this is with Windows XP.

As far as hardware, OEMs are catching up in the ultrabook category and coming up with better stuff all the time. In fact I think next years MBAs are going to face a new challenger in x86 Windows 8 tablets that run in the same category. The Samsung Series 7 slate is now shipping, no keyboard but thinner and lighter then an MBA with it looks to be similar battery life with a better and brighter screen. I think OEMs are starting to get it as well along with Microsoft. Look for more and more interesting designs next year with Windows 8, in parituclar hybrid designs with detachable keyboard that become tablets running both ARM and x86 CPUs.

But do you consider high end to be "the highest power" or "the highest model numbers?" If the term high end is detached from any kind of power equation then it doesn't really mean anything. I wouldn't care if I had a low end i3 as long as it gave me more power than what I have now (though it's a dual core you get the point :D). If it is based on power, then an OCed CPU can be 60% more powerful than the stock models. I'd consider a 4gh/z i7/equivilent xeon high end, even a mid ranged OCed part could easily have perfomance parity. Not using somethings full potential is a waste, and does make it pale with proper high end stuff. I mean, look at top end parts like the 990x, thats build for overclocking!

For most things you need a workstation for (graphics/video editing/etc.) GPUs are very important. The more usually the better (though several things still wont use SLI :() but with a stock CPU that would be severely handicapped. I wouldn't expect that from a "high end" system.

The point with the imacs is that they are not mobile computers, they are desktops. Why hamstring with parts which would be considered low/mid end in a desktop, when you are in a desktop? It's not like they are cheap.

I consider high-end to be at whatever it left the manufacture at, overclocking is an enthusiast thing and its going to depend on the person who owns it. I'm sure there are people out that who own a 980x/990x and don't overclock.

I wouldn't say the iMacs are hamstrings since that's the form-factor they come in, if they aimed to be a proper desktop (which they won't since that's what MacPro is for), it would be impossible to to fit a dual slot gpu in there and fit within thermal constraints and power restrictions.
