Ikea desk gallery

I am looking for a good long desk that can fit a computer and a printer on the side but I don't know about getting an ikea brand table. I have been usually getting the Office Depot/Staples brand desks for my computers but they don't really sell long ones that can fit like 2 computers. I am thinking of getting Ikea but I hear the quality kinda sucks. Can someone chime in on this for me.

Its all good man, I don't know how many pages back. Custom though and very clean job.

Unfortunately I'm not capable of designing such a mount myself.

Do you or anyone here know of a decent product that can accommodate a triple 24" LCD setup?

It all depends on which desk you actually buy. I've seen some crappy quality desks from OD/Staples, and Ikea has their share of cheap desks as well. You basically get what you pay for. The Galants are good quality, modular, and expensive. The Vika series is decent quality, modular, and cheap. The Jerker has been replaced by the Fredrik (smaller, less depth), so your only chance is on Craigslist. Check out the desk in person before you make your decision.

For your specific needs, a Galant should do fine. If it's too pricey, then go with the Vika Amon tabletop, and choose your leg. If your printer is heavy, I'd recommend getting a Vika Annefors for that side of the desk instead of the typical Vika Curry legs.

Personally, I hate my tower and printer to be on my desk, so I keep them under the desk. My printer sits on a small filing cab and my tower is on a slab of wood (carpet) unless it has its own wheels.

There really isn't anything to it. The pipe comes threaded so all you really have to do is drill holes and bolt the flange to the desk.

Oh gods of prefab furnature, what IKEA pieces would I need to purchase in order to approximate a desk of these dimensions?

There's quite a bit of wiggle room on the length, just so long as it's in the ballpark. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out which pieces fit together :(

You could get close with a galant.

Well, Galant is the only (afaik) IKEA desk that offers rounded corner. Go here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=galant and check all the pieces available. Like schapman43 said, you should be able to get close. The only caveat is that b/c how Galant's corner piece is designed, one arm of the L will be narrower (23.75") than the other (31.5").

Look at page 4 of the Galant Assembly Instructions and it will show you the available extensions etc. You don't have to use the preconfigured options. If your Ikea sells the underframes separately you can use either Lagan or Numerar countertops with them and make your own Ikeahack. That will allow you to use the A-legs or the T-legs with a real wood top.

I used Vika Kaj legs but wish I had known when we made the trip they sold the Galant frames separately. The closest Ikea is over 3 hours away so I will deal with it because I refuse to pay their ridiculous shipping fees.

That's what I'm struggling with. They don't make clear if it's the long or short end of the L that's narrower. Can't figure out which extensions will work on which side.

In any case, it looks like the closest I can get it a corner with one short/narrow desk on the long end of the L, and one long/deep desk on the short end of the L. That makes the desk 110" by 110", which is WAY too long. :(

the short end is narrower, the extensions work on either side. it is 23.75" x 31.5" so it will add a lot more length on the short leg side, or only a little on the long leg side of the L the framing is all universal as well, the under frame can be made to be a left or right corner and has all the holse predrilled for any extensions you add. its farily common to find the desk tops in the as-is section of the store, so switch corners later is possible, as is creating your own top of your own perfered size

looks like you could get one 78.750"x 86.625" by getting a single corner and two extensions

Alright, that solves the length issue... any way to get both sides 23.75" deep (even if it means losing the rounded inside corner)? Having one leg 31.5" deep would consume far too much of the room...

Not using the Galant corner desk as a base. They are all different depths per side whether right or left.

How about a Galant frame and T-Legs along with a custom top? You could easily do it with cupboard grade plywood. I've though about making custom tops to replace what I have. We'll see if I ever get around to it.

One leg of the galant is (imo) too deep, and one is not quite deep enough.

Wish they made one with even sized sides somewhere between the two depths.

As of Now, I just treat the deeper side like it's not quite as deep...

so I bought the vika amon desk set. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10071172/ with an extra vika curry leg to put in the middle back (besides the four corners). However, the middle part of the fiber board seems to not work for this. Drilled the five holes in and then noticed they just rip right out. 1. did I ruin the desk? ie. is the structure not safe now...idk how to put it. 2. if so how can I fix it? 3. can I put a leg there? 4. should i buy a new one :-(? sorry for all the questions, just mad cause i took all most of the day setting it all up. Seems fine now, but i have two monitors on it at the moment and i don't want it breaking. Any help would be awesome

I think Vika AMON is "empty" inside (probably has some honeycomb structure). You can only attach legs on periphery.

I've bought shelves at Ikea that were this way. Inside was a cardboard honeycomb structure. Not big deal, just need to be careful when you hacking certain Ikea products.

Yup, similar to the LACK shelving, just not as thick.

How heavy are your monitors? They should be fine if they're LCDs. I had a 60lb CRT on mine for a few years. You can keep the leg there, without screwing it in, if you want - I did this for a while when I removed one of the legs for my corner setup, but it didn't really do much since the CRT was directly over one of the legs anyhow.

Came up with this. Two table tops + two extension tops + three T-legs. Looks like it should work...

Comes out to $420, which is a bit more than I expected... also need to figure out some under-desk storage if I go this route.

I also would like to do something like that. Where exactly would you install the legs? My concern with going with extensions with the Galant (or any Ikea desk for that matter) is that I have a funny feelig the tops are not going to be all perfectly level with one another. Let me know if you go this route and how it works out for you. Thanks.

Each table frame has 2 places (on the ends) to attach the legs (the corner frame has 3 places to attach the legs). Each extension frame has 1 place to attach the leg.

To those who are thinking of the above configuration -- make sure that 23.75" is enough depth for you.

With the Galant, they'll be perfectly level. With Vika Amon, they'll only be level if you connect them somehow; I used a simpson bracket and about a dozen screws. :p

for those of you that have the Fredrik, is it a pretty sturdy desk? I'm thinking about ordering one, but I won't be able to see it in person at a store first.

Found a new in box Jerker table/desk for $15 on CL. Going to pick it up in an hour or so. Not real idea where I'll put this one but how could I pass up that kind of deal.

Jeez, that's a steal. I'll give you $20 for it :D

LOL, a steal at twice the price!

I was afraid that I would get there and he would say it was a typo or something. Thankfully it was just someone with too much money who didn't know the value of compressed particle board furniture.

I got it home last night and started opening it up in the garage. I decided that it had to replace the modified Jerker that I had at the office. While I lost 3" of depth I gained quite a bit of width.

I got it over there this morning and modified it to fit my stand and USB Hub/Grommet. I have some aluminum poker table drink holders coming this week and I am going to drop into the surface of the desk. I'll use one as a drink holder and the other to hold pencils/pens/markers. I just need to find a 3-3/8" hole saw.

It was too close to the corner to get a decent picture from the front so this is the best I could do.

Came across an ikea desk on CL today and mistook it for a galant at first, but now seeing the picture up above, I'm guessing its a jerker table with cross-"beam" for a file drawer attachment.

Can someone confirm/deny that?

I have a galant corner desk that I've been looking for a straight extension off the long end. Does anyone know if this table will match in the way I'm hoping, and potentially attach in some manner as the other galants do? I've never seen a jerker table personally, so I'm a little in the dark. Also, as far as color, I can't quite tell what wood this one has, as it doesn't seem quite dark enough to be a beech, but seems a little darker than a birch (which is what my galant is). Is this a good deal at $45?

That desk setup is exactly the one I have...there is a corner piece that you should be looking at though instead of two table tops in the corner. Three T-legs is fine for that setup (assuming you use three table tops with three pieces of desk wood that is). You put one on each end, and then the third T-Leg goes in the corner. The assembly directions are pretty clear about how to do it (ask an IKEA staffer about it...they should have assembled Galant's in the store you can examine). I'll try to post a picture once I'm done unpacking into the new apartment.

The three pieces of my desk are almost perfectly level. One joint is perfectly level, and the other is so close you have to be looking for it to really notice it's off by maybe 1mm. You can tweak it a little bit after assembly by tightening (or loosening) the screws holding the wood to the frame in quarter turn increments. It also helps if you put in extra time making sure all the T-legs are the same exact length (they are telescoping units). After all that's done take a good level to it and tweak the feet of the T-legs to make sure everything is level in both axis of the desk (hint: use a level with a magnetic grip and check the frame, not the wood).

Will the Summera computer holder mount underneath the desk to desks other than the Galant? I see from the instructions that it can mount to the top of a desk, but then you have the computer extended out to the left or the right of the desk. I'm looking to get a Fredrik, and if it won't mount to that, I'll just get a set of Capita legs and a Ekby Lavia shelf and set my desktop on that..

If the desk frame has two parallel support bars that are just as far apart as the Galant's support structure, then maybe it'll hold. When it mounts to the side of the desk it is actually plugging into the ends of the two support beams (which are hollow).
