Rage sucks

I thought I read a blip from Carmack where he stated that he would be releasing a high res texture pack for the game at a later date ala Crysis 2...it will also add the Advanced Graphics options PC gamers expect...am I crazy or is that the plan?

He better release it tomorrow, this game is a goddamn disaster.

So far, I think the graphics are OK. The thing that actually bothers me more than the overall texture quality is the "stitching" find in every object in the game. It probably has something to do with optimizing the geometry for speed or something (or at least I hope that's why it was done), but it is really annoying when you can see the seams on everything (including parts of people's faces, lol). Otherwise, I think the game is actually pretty fun only being about an hour into it.

Damn, I had some hope for this one.

Well, I will prolly still pick up the GOTY edition, (it's iD, someone will give them a goty award regardless), a year from now when it is on a Steam sale.

Wow the screens do look REALLY bad. I was considering the game at $30 but now I may pass entirely. 22gb for blurry textures? Really? The OP post was a little extreme but the message was loud and clear. Thanks for saving me money.

I thought Quake 4 was gonna be awesome and it was the biggest let down.
.

Maybe, but at least it had.....

excellent gfx
tonnes of gfx options
proper m&kb bindings
good weapons
outstanding character animations
long campaign

I haven't bought this game and after seeing this video, I don't know if I will. Is the texture pop in really this bad when playing the game?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5oEdfT4OWY&feature=player_embedded

It looks like as soon as you move to something it pops in and moving away it pops out and moving back to it again and it pops in again. If it's this bad there is no way I could play like that.

that's some idiot with a 5200 AGP system FFS.

That is the Crap Xbox and ps3 version right?

Oh wait 22gb textures then xbox must look more like ass since the dvd limit.

please tell me that is the ass ugly ps3 version and not how the PC looks.

that video is from the previous amd drivers that were broken. The new driver does not have that problem.

haha. looks like someone is getting a kick out of shitting on Rage.

the whole front page is plastered with Rage shit.

welp, back to unreal engine 3

I wish we could.. .... ....

::chuckles @JPEG improving pictures comment posted earlier:::
That almost insinuates that there is a difference between 128kbit vs. FLAC :) Noooo that can't be right.. those pictures are fine... Honest...

i think i've exhausted every avenue i can possibly find to try and fix my texture pop in but none of them will work

has anyone fixed the problem on an nVidia graphics card? i've tried the config files, cache fix, starting commands, nVidia setting tweaks, and i have the latest 285.38 drivers installed with the newest game profiles. im starting to give up hope for rage :(

I don't even understand how this is fucking possible.

They must've tested this game on _some_ hardware to build it, right? So what'd they use? A SiS Xabre 800? How does the top-end GPUs from AMD and Nvidia not work correctly with Rage on ship day?

Sure, maybe Nvidia and AMD can do some optimizing later, but what GPUs was id using when they were working on this? What drivers were they testing their OpenGL code against as they developed id Tech 5?

on a positive note, the game does look good in 800 x 600........... windowed mode........... on a 1080p monitor.

it looks even better in 640 x 480

I think I'm going to refuse delivery on my Newegg RAGE order arriving tomorrow...I think I'll buy Hard Reset instead to remind me what a PC first game is supposed to look like

They must have used a farm of clustered Teslas. :D

it also looks better when you delete the game.. since there will be 21 gig of space free for games that are worth it :p

Please just stop releasing games on pc unless it is ONLY FOR PC.

Be nice to just sit down with game developers and find out WTF ARE YOU DOING?

How is this game so non optimized? 22GB??? for THAT??? LOL

I think they spent 98% of their time on every other platform besides the pc and just dumped out our version.

lol
Just read the IGN review of the PC version...giving it an 8.5 spouting"visually stunning"
IGN has always been crap, but lawl at 8.5

lol

just give it a week or two. I'm sure IGN's review will get sucked into the wormhole of doom

I ran it on my PC under a friend's Steam account and it ran and displayed fine but I think vsync is broken. Specs in my sig (i7+GTX480) and I'm using the "bf3 beta" nvidia drivers.

I turned up anti-aliasing to 16x and enabled GPU transcoding and while I did see some minor pop-in it was only when I turned quickly that I barely noticed textures loading in. I'm not seeing the painfully obvious pop-in that I've seen in the videos.

FRAPS says 59/60FPS steady so something is syncing but there's tearing sometimes and especially on the ATV. I'm gonna force vsync in the nvidia CP and see if that helps.

So which is worse: Rage or Daikatana?

Haven't played Rage yet (picked it up for $30 and it's downloading), but I'm going to say Daikatana anyway. Daikatana was flawed in every single possible way and was just all around a horrible game. Rage seems so far to be an iffy to bad port that for some reason people hyped the holy hell out of.

If I remember, Carmack used to code to: "If it doesn't run in Windows NT, I don't do it." That is why all the Quake series runs great even to this day. Not sure what happened here.. Oh yeah, the console horde has taken over. I love Carmack but I am so damn tired of everyone playing to the console. Granted this is id's first real console game (I did enjoy Orc's & Elv's on the DS though).

You win a prize for being the first person I've seen to bring up the Xabre in almost 10 years.

I am tempted to go dig up my Radeon x800, replace my HD 4850 with it, try to find some Win7 x64 drivers for it, and see if Rage works better on it.

What say you, [H]? If I get three "do its", it shall be done.

You don't have an antique 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (not PCI express) card with 16 megabytes of VRAM on it lying around, eh? Gotta love the Glide optimization; Diablo II never looked so good or played so smoothly!

Fixed:
So which is worse: Rage or boston red sox?

Bummer to hear it tanking so hard on the PC but it really seems like Kharma kicking them in the @ss for sucking up to apple/ipad/console quality crapola.

At least they can do nothing worse next time... we hope!

Not sure if serious. But if so, that's a seriously horrible situation.

It's up to software makers to make sure what they're programming works on the systems it will be used on. Otherwise (in this instance) AMD will be perpetually behind, struggling to release driver after driver to work with every new game that comes out, and constantly breaking the old ones.

And yet time and time again with every game release, the developers are lazy and don't. They can't program properly using the resources they have, then shift the blame off to Nvidia and AMD for drivers that don't work with "their" game. Developers are constantly working BEHIND driver release versions and aiming for OLDER hardware. Why is every damn release in the past couple years so broken on release and reliant on launch day drivers?

Seriously? The drivers and platform have been out for ages. Games go "GOLD" weeks, even months before shelf date in most cases. How fucking hard is it to work with what you have, and what has been on the market/web for months to make sure it works right? Why is it Nvidia and AMD's responsibility to time and time again clean up after the developers? Why do we need release day driver updates? Why do we need release day sli profiles? Why isn't this shit done ahead of time in the existing software? Almost every goddamn game engine or port developed in the past god knows how many years suffer from this lazy ass bullshit.

It gets so tiresome. As I said before, I'm glad I'm months behind on picking up these titles so the shit is hopefully fixed by the time I get it....

Megatextures!!!

...until now... I've had it for years, and now it decides it doesn't want to start. I fixed this once, (can't remember what the root cause was,) but had to reinstall, and just didn't feel like researching it again. Fallout 3 is doing it now too. I never played past the first town, so decided to go back and try it. Gets to the title and crashes out.

I had this problem with both when I moved to Windows 7. If I remember correctly, it has to do with the game installing the .NET framework but for whatever reason you still have to go into the control panel and manually enable it.
