Dark Souls Thread

I watched the GB:QL, game looks interesting but I'll wait until it hits the $20 range I think.

Shouldn't take too long, seems like games get discounted super fast nowadays. Plus, if it did drop to $20, I'd snatch it up right away.

Demon's Souls didn't hit $20 until it was a PS3 Greatest Hits title. Regardless of how much some people are excited about the game, Dark Souls is still a niche title that will likely be produced in lower volumes than big budge AAA titles.

Anyway I forgot to pre order from Amazon to get the Collector's Edition, so I just placed and order through www.deepdiscount.com to get the Collector's Edition with overnight shipping. Damn procrastination...

Does this game require online? I haven't played demon's soul but I heard it was only fun if you were to play online with it. Is that the same with Dark souls?

fun offline and online. if you wanted to control world tendency it's better to play offline to go pure black or pure white. Hopefully that's aspect is gone in Dark Souls because most people didn't understand how it worked.

I wonder how fail got banned? Maybe from making countless DS threads.

Anyway, I'll try to update the OP on this to have more relevant release/game info and a nice badass picture.

Probably due to how many times he posted that anyone that buys popular games likes taking it up the ass.

You miss out on some cool features, but it's essentially the same game offline. It does add a little bit more tension and risk because of Black Phantoms and fake messages, which is a good thing. :)

The game is a bit less desolate when you're playing online.. you can see notes from other players and see their ghosts as they play through the same area that you are in. In addition, you can call blue phantoms into your game to help you with bosses or other parts of the game.. or you can be invaded by black phantoms.

The main use of online for me, though.. is touching other player's bloodstains.. it shows you the last few seconds of their lives.. so you can get an idea of what happened to them in order to better prepare yourself for the challenge ahead... or you can laugh at them being surprised by an enemy that was in plain sight, etc.

Updated the op with some general info on the game. If there's anything else you think I should add in, let me know.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but which class are you all planning on playing ?
I was looking at the pyromancer since he seems like a decent battle mage.

Personally I was hoping an op class would reveal itself, then I was going to play that :) I played a knight (maybe it was called a paladin) in demon's souls and it kinda sucked late in the game when enemies kept getting more armor but were vulnerable to magic.

Pyromancer is probably going to be the most popular as having access to offensive magic from the start will make the first 3 bosses a cakewalk. After that, the potency of fireball starts to taper off and you'll be forced to engage bosses in toe-to-toe combat. You can no longer cheese the entire game with magic like in DS since you're only given a set amount of charges per spell before you have to replenish them at a bonfire.

My original choice was a Thief since they get the Master Key which will cut out a lot of backtracking or memorization for the chest/doors you missed early on. However, I watched some of IGN's 24 hour Dark Souls stream and it seems everyone is allowed one 'gift' at character creation and the Master Key is an option. Sorcerer/Pyromancer/Cleric with the Master Key gift will be the most versatile options.

I'll probably play a Sorcerer since they have spells like Magic Weapon, Magic Shield, Illuminate, Cloak, Equipment Repair, Decurse, etc.

I <3 blessed weapons :)

Probably starting as cleric this time around and going the same route to cut down on amount of pots needed.

I'm thinking warrior or wanderer, but leaning towards wanderer. The fun of Demon's Souls combat comes from agility and avoidance, and it seems the wanderer will excel at that style.

The collectors edition was sold out everywhere, even when I called best buy they said they were sold out. BUT, if you go into best buy they have these new preorder kiosks in the game section i found the collectors edition there, preordered JYEA! I bet its a mistake on their end and someones not going to get their art book MOUAHAHAHHA

Supposed to have release day arrival from amazon, so hopefully I'll be playing by noon.

PSN: Ultimatequix

Should be grabbing mine on my lunch break tomorrow from Gamestop. Not going to do the Midnight release but definitely looking forward to playing this on my 360. Been waiting for a good, immersive, RPG like this for some time. With Skyrim and Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning still a while away this will saite my appetite for awhile. Love the IGN review of it and most of all I am excited to be able to play a spear and shield class!!! Not sure what I am going to start first but I am sure that I will have multiple characters in no time!!!

XboxLive = FizzyPaleFace

Heebs6 here. Hit me up on PS3!

joesaiditstrue here on PSN, hit me up... 5 more hours til i can pick up my copy

edit: 91% til platinum on Demon's Souls, missing a Friend's Ring, I have every other trophy :(

just got home from Gamestop, played their in-house copy for about an hour, got to level 10, female thief, spent most of my SL's in endurance and one in HP (i started out at level 5)

don't quite understand "humanity", i got 1 and used it, but it was gone when i died

my initial impressions of the game: enemies seem a tad bit difficult (the non-humanoid ones, like the "Trolls" with the big clubs, and the "Ghosts"), and thats at pretty much the beginning of the game

controls seem "not as tight" as demon souls, being able to attack > roll back isn't nearly as twitchy as it was in demon's souls, as i was getting tagged repeatedly trying to attack > roll back

Rolling was intentionally nerfed in Dark Souls cause it was overpowered in Demons' Souls.

Humanity is used to light new bonfires and to return to your human form which allows you to summon blue phantoms or be invaded by other players.

Make sure your equip burden is under 25% if you want Demon's Souls speed rolling.

-Under 25% = Demon's Souls style fast rolls
-25% to 50% = slower, but still not fat rolls
-50% to 75% = slightly improved fat rolls
-75% to 100% = old style fat rolls
-Over 100% = dropped brick

They changed it so now you really need to be lean if you want full speed rolls. Also, the nerf chineseman is probably referring to is the reduction in invincibility frames when rolling. Basically, you are vulnerable during more of the roll than in Demon's Souls. Edit: I've also heard dexterity may play a part in roll speed, in which case higher dex might increase the "twitch" feel of rolls.

Went ahead and added all you guys to my PSN. Most of you still waiting on the game?

Anyway, what's the story behind covenants? Anybody thinking of joining? Why/why not?

Damn I just got an email from Amazon saying my order is delayed. I had it ordered a while ago but I noticed it said it wasn't the collectors edition. When they had the $20 credit for preordering Gears of War 3 I cancelled the "regular" Dark Souls pre order and then re preordered The Collectors Edition with the $20 off credit on 9/20. That was before the Collectors Edition ran out from what I know. Damn you Amazon.

The peeps on Cheap Ass Gamer say that Amazon didn't get The Collectors Edition in but all the regular copies came in. Who knows. Get on the web chat and politely complain, I got $10 credit.

So pumped for this game. Should have arrived/be arriving before I get off work today.

Looking for reliable person(s) to bro-op with (must have played Demon Souls extensively, know ins and outs of game mechanics, research offline, etc).

PS3 - kidstechno

I'll be on all night and most of tomorrow. Plan on going Deprived and Way of the White and then possibly switching to Princess's Guard since I mainly like to focus on PvE first.

Can either add me on PSN or pop me a PM and I can add you.

Going to be a looooong night.

SO best buy never got any collectors editions in, so they gave me a 20 dollar gift card and reg. edition. wooot

This makes me a little more than upset.

I preordered Dark Souls the instant it became available on Amazon. At the time I placed my order, there was no Collectors Edition available to pre-order. I would have ordered the CE instead, but was told later on that all preorders would be automatically upgraded. And apparently my copy just shipped from Amazon and should be arriving later today...

Wow, seems like only Gamestop got the Collector's Edition. I just picked mine up and the CE really sucks so those of you that got screwed over aren't missing out on anything. All you get is a hard-case which is ruined cause they use the cheap glue on the seals so you got sticky crap on the top and bottom, a small art book with the same artwork you can see online with higher fidelity, a code which can be redeemed online for the soundtrack and a .pdf mini-guide which contains only a few excerpts from a full-fledged guide which is supposedly coming out in physical form at a later date which you'll have to buy.

Come to think of it, I remember seeing a few people walk out of the store with 360 copies that were just the barebones game whereas the PS3 users all got the hard-case.
