I want to set up a Folding Farm using Overclocked i5 2500k of about 10 nodes to get them Big Beta PPD, with all the VM Tricks ofcourse..;)
but after the point nerfing I wonder if this is still a good idea..

with the same money I could set up 2 nodes of EVGA Sr2 or get me a 4P AMD system and wait for 16 core interlagos, but I am not sure since Opterons don't Overclock at all unless if they are ES like the ones Patriot have...:p

so what do you guys think..?

Loving my 4P system.

Even if with current MagnyCours? I guess the none linear bonus point curb is Helping you alot..:D

are you waiting for Interlagos? how much of a point boost do you expect? I don't expect it to be linear...

The points are still worth it but I'd go with the SR-2 or G34 options already mentioned.

I just completed a 6904 with my 980x rig and it took 4.5 days to complete. That's too long for me to sit around and wonder if the vm or something else will go wrong. Guess I'm just paranoid. :(

Wow 4.5 Days? I wonder why if Intel charges 1k for a single CPU why wont they add 4 QPI link? can you imagine? a Extreme 4P system? 48 threads at 4.5 GHZ?.. serious Punch there...

They charge $2k for that. :p

It's what the 7xxx series xeons are for.

I assume he means lower core count ones.......and ya, the 980x = consumer, to do 2p, or above, you need server

well the one on newegg its only clocked at 2.6 GHZ how Low clocked is the "Entry Level" one? 1.5? :(

what does a tricked 2500k system get on bigbeta? If TJ's 980x at 4.5ghz gets about 80k PPD I would guess a 2500K clocked a bit higher might get about 65k?

so 65k * 10 = 650,000 ppd
I would guess though each 2500k rig is going to be about $500 so you're looking at $5,000.

hex core SR2s at about 3.6ghz get about 200,000 ppd
I would guess each one of these will cost about $1500

quad octo core G34 at 2.3ghz gets about 275,000 ppd
say, $2,800 per rig

quad dodeca core G34 at 1.8ghz gets about 370,000 ppd
probably $4800 per rig

quad dodeca core G34 at 2.6ghz gets about 580,000 ppd
lots of money

I should say though, fewer rigs is generally better. Also non-overclocked rigs are generally better because they are also less maintenance.

.

Not bat for the OverClocked i5, but man those quad dodeca magnycours PPD looks amazing... seeing how steep is the Bonus Point Curb one can only imagine what 64 cores at same speed can do..? Close to 1ML PPD ?

heck if I had the money I paid $2k per processors if below combo existed..:p

this beast of a MB

Running these beasts at 5GHZ..

I need to go change my underwear...

back to reality...:(

Sorry to pop the bubble, but only xeons can run in 2 or 4 proc mobos.

Also most (read all but the SR-2) server mobos do not support OC-ing.

You would need a 2600k. You need 8 threads to do bigadv let alone hit the deadline for bigbeta however you fiddle the OS.

It can be done with a 2500k, a healthy OC, and a VM tweek. Though this is not a recommended Stanford practice.

didnt the bigbeta deadline get shortened? i think a 2500k would come very close to the deadline

Apologies, seems like a [email protected] with OS "tweaks" to pretend you have 12 cores and using -smp 4 -bigbeta does get you under the deadline by about 4-7 hours.

Wow. Not much breathing room. Any report of PPD?

and if I am correct, the G34 would be considerably cheaper than 10 2500K systems

Depends completely on processors prices for the G34s. It would be fairly close to a push for G34s that would do 500K ppd.

Power would be the big thing. You would have to be pulling at least 2000 W with 10 x 2500Ks. The G34 would pull maybe 600 - 650 W.

Power and greatly reduced maintenance.
that and 16 core Interlagos makes the G34 a nice option to 10 single node i5..:)

man if one can only conect all of those nodes in one Huge Single System Image using low latency interconect like InfinBand's RDMA(nono seconds)... that would be one mean machine

so 65k * 10 = 650,000 ppd

A 2600K, mobo, and 8 gigs of RAM can be had for $450. A couple creatively wired OCZ ZX1250W ($150 each) could power 10 builds, right? Is this viable, yet?

add in HSF.....cant get anywhere near the speed needed with only stock cooling

Patriot -

The post he is quoting is jibberish non the less. I can't understand word one of it, and I doubt he could either.

One of my 4p boxen is intel... e7-4870 its slower than your 4p considerably... It's rather sad actually...
That's not right. Possibly a software issue scaling to 80 threads properly
