The thread is called "Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple", not "Steve Jobs is Dying of Cancer". Whether or not the reason for him leaving was illness, people who are cheering his self-removal as CEO don't deserve to be harangued by hippies, nor do people who are compassionate for his condition need to be harangued by people who for some reason want him dead.

I say, I feel bad for his illness, but personally I didn't think he was that good of a person as CEO of Apple and thus I approve of this action on his part.

Such vile for a man you don't even know in these forums, The Troll-fu here is outrageous, he was as much as a visionary as everyone says Bill gates is. The Stock hit alone should show how valuable he was to Apple. From what I've read though he pretty much groomed the new CEO to be just like him, and Apple products have for the most part gotten cheaper over the years, it's when you want to "Upgrade" Memory etc that they seem to charge outrageous prices, but in my experience most of these products have outlasted their PC counter-parts and can stay relevant for longer. Not to mention I love Mac OS X for productivity, but I will always need a PC for gaming.

People say they hate apple fanboys for whatever reason, but I've never seen one, much less dozens, of apple fanboys wishing death on a competitor. So who is worse? I'd say anti-apple fanboys by a long mile.
 
Steve Jobs is a horrible human being, and he deserves to die for stealing organs from people who could have actually benefited from them for more than a few years.

Apple fanboys represent the decline of occidental society, focusing on fashion, expensive yet not durable useless stuff. They need to be exterminated in order to save humanity as a whole.

Based on what I have read, I wouldn't call the haters "IT schmucks" --that would be doing a disservice to real IT schmucks.

I'm not a fan of the current Apple, just to be clear. They just killed Final Cut Pro with their new version, dumbing it down to the level of a prosumer product instead of the heavy-hitter software that corporations like NBC used. They've dropped enterprise products like the XServe, X-RAID, and XSan. It is becoming very clear that they wish to get out of that market --at the expense of leaving those who bought their product for such a purpose high and dry. A Mac Mini or Mac Pro running OS X Server is not an appropriate substitute, and at the end of the day, I see educational institutions, advertising firms, etc. who are sold on Apple dropping them due to the inability to make their product work well in a networked environment. Apple is pursuing the consumer market now that they have gained traction, and are going scorched earth on fields they apparently no longer care about, making them hard to trust by those in the professional world. In the real IT (non-consumer) world, Apple is deliberately making themselves persona-non-grata.

However, without Apple, USB might never have gained the traction it did. Apple was the first company to use UEFI in a major way. Apple co-invented FireWire, which may not seem like much today, but has been incredibly useful for a number of people. Apple has been at the forefront of a number of technologies that they may not have invented, but their use strengthened adoption by others (e.g., desktop LCD panels, DVD writers). Also, OS X and other Apple products have served to drive innovation among Apple's competitors, making them better than they otherwise might have been. It seems that a lot of people who love to hate Apple forget that without them, the non-Apple products they use might not exist, or might not be as user-friendly or innovative due to lack of competition.

Cheering Apple's death would be like cheering AMD's death. I think we can all see what would happpen in the x86 processor market if there was only one vendor. Many here don't get that; even if you dislike Apple, there's a good reason to have them around.

And then there are the crowd of people here who are either trolling, or who truly have such an underdeveloped, prepubescent conscience that they actually want to see Steve Jobs die. After reading all of that vitriol, I pity those people --and I'm reminded why I've lost a lot of my faith in humanity in recent years. Sad.

Apple is probably the only sane PC hardware manufacturer out there, and for that they've been rewarded. Lets face it guys, the PC experience is terrible for anybody not registered on this forum. They buy their $600 HP, take it home, turn it on for the first time and are immediately asked to spend $XX on AV. It immediately wants to update (which either annoys the user or is ignored), and its got at least one piece of crapware that adds functionality they don't need and clutters up their experience. Things are alerting them, asking them for money, cluttering up their screen and all they want is to get on Facebook. This is even recognized by Microsoft (Signature PC's), and its resulted in a reaction so negative from consumers that the biggest PC hardware manufacturer is thinking about exiting the market. This is a company which made tens of billions of dollars in revenue, and mere hundreds of millions in profits this last quarter. When your moving that much hardware and making that little money, something's wrong.

Apple buys their parts from the same suppliers everybody else does. They buy the same caps, the same PCB's, the same x86 chips, the same controllers, the same drives... sometimes they buy nicer IPS panels. Sometimes they tweak their suppliers hardware, and they seldom engineer for the feature-lists the average consumer uses to make their choice at a best-buy (read: 7200rpm drive > 5400rpm drive right? 1TB > 128GB right? 3.2Ghz > 2.2Ghz right?). Apple's hardware is always very similar to what you can find in a laptop from any other hardware OEM. They use an OS which is at the very least as functional as the one everybody else uses. They put it all in a nice chassis, and they sell it at a nice profit. They don't sign contracts with McAfee to include trial-ware. They don't bundle Zinga trial games. What they sell you, they make money on. This isn't a for-cost part. This isn't a part designed to get market penetration. This isn't a part to attract developers. Its designed to sell for a profit.

That's it: make product for $X, sell product for $1.5X. That in itself is revolutionary thinking these days.

And you guys get all insulted over this? Is it your money?

And even if you disagree with everything I just said, even if I'm completely wrong and you love your screen that's mounted on a composite chassis rather than an aluminum one, and you love your Acer-Connect software, and that Zinga trial game has opened you up to a whole new world of flash games: there was still the damn iPhone!

This dude created a $60B+/yr industry (300 million units at $200/unit) in 5 years piratically from scratch. Call it over-zealous American consumerism, put it down to whatever you want but the fact is the iPhone is something millions of people wanted --and still want.

This rampant fanboyism has to stop. This is not an Lenovo board. This is forum for all hardware, macs included.

He's been incredibly good for that company and he's been good for this industry.

Mr Jobs, very few people will miss you personally but professionally you will be sorely missed.

This could not have been said any better. You just explained in detail why so many Mac users say their experience with Apple products are "so easy to use." Reading through this entire thread is embarrassing to say the least but your explanation was amazing. Thank you for having some common sense and maturity unlike 90% of this thread.
 
Why does it make him a "prick" if he actually succeeded in one of his life goals to be a rich and successful businessman? Sure, I bet if ALL of you were as rich as him, you would give away MILLIONS of dollars to charity, right? Right...

Sorry dude, I'm not feeling the same love for Apple and Steve Jobs as you obviously do. I hate using a MAC, its not a pleasnt experience for me as a long time user of a PC. I'll never forgive Steve Jobs for getting a liver transplant ahead of thousands of others that were probably on that same exact waiting list and some of those people may be dead now because they didn't receive the liver that he got. I don't care for Apple's business practices of creating high priced mediocre products that's marketed to people that buy them because they don't know any better and it looks "cool". Apple has become rich on the backs of misinformed people that buy their products.

I could go on and on, but its time to let this company fade away and back to where they belong as a small time niche product maker for people that buy form over functionality.

A Mac user would say the Windows experience is not pleasant, as would a Windows user about Linux, as would a Linux users about Windows, and so on. It's just what you become accustomed to that typically makes you NOT like another product.

1 person would have died from not receiving the liver he did (unless these other only people required partial liver transplants), and he's a hypothetical murderer. Let's say he DID pay for that liver: The hospital could sure as hell use the money to help others. You blame Jobs as if he had the only involvement here. It's not exactly like he had was holding the hospital hostage for this liver...was he?

I thought the posts might calm down a bit, and perhaps veer back into a region of reason, but there's still way too many unnecessarily butt-hurt people in here. He's just a man. Sure he's made tons of money and products that have apparently ruined your 'lives' to it's very core (from the sounds of it), but in the end, he'll die like everyone else. Move on, or try looking into the mirror to find out why you can't.

2. That being said, any douche who rails against Big Brother and then has the audacity to become Big Brother to the point where, rather than acknowledging a physical problem in a product, says "you're holding it wrong", can DIAF.
 
I hate apple just as much as the next guy, but wishing ill-will towards someone based on the company he championed is absurd.

You genuinely don't get it.

Look at my signature. Does it say "iMac"? "Mac Pro"? "Macbook Pro"?

It's a system I've built myself. I've worked in computers as a career since 1995, and been a hobbyist as far back as 1992 (the first system I built myself was a 386DX 20MHz in 1993). Most of that involves the Wintel world, a short period of it in the early part of the 2000's involved Mac heavily, and now I do a tiny bit of Mac administration and a vast amount of Wintel administration. If you saw my resume' (this is not intended as "bragging", just a statement) or any of the systems I've built, VMWare servers I've creaged and manage, etc. I think you'd be able to acknowledge I "know stuff about computers".

I see computers from multiple perspectives, something I don't think you do, at least from your question. You seem to see a couple of trees --I see the forest, which encompasses everything from a hobbyist overclocked-PC to corporate systems administration, to the world of technology as a business. Notebooks, tablets, network servers, smartphones, they all belong to technology as a business.

As such, I acknowledge Apple. Not because I always like them (in fact, there are plenty of times I can't stand them, though there are things I think they do well). I acknowledge Apple because they've done a number of things that help the technology industry grow as a whole.

  • Where would the smartphone industry be without the iPhone? I don't have one, but I've seen a lot of innovation from other products that might not have occurred without the iPhone's presence.
  • Where would the portable music world be without Apple? The iPod and the iTunes Music Store spurred Amazon to create their own music store, and we've got a slew of other players from Sandisk, Microsoft, etc.
  • Go back far further, and think about where GUIs came from, or the computer mouse. Apple may not have invented them, but they brought these things into the spotlight. The same goes for USB, which was (for the longest time) "those two ports on your Pentium II that you did nothing with".

Apple has made plenty of mistakes, like everyone else, and ticked off more than a few people along the way, myself included sometimes. While their kit looks beautiful, I've hated working on it because taking it apart (I used to do warranty repair on it at one time) sucks in comparison to almost any other gear I've worked on. I've also hated their approach to enterprise networking, which has been a thorn in my side for years. However, because I'm objective, I can view them without blinders on and acknowledge what they've done for the tech industry, whether I like them or not. And for all the things I don't like about Steve Jobs, I can acknowledge his abilities as a technology pitch-man, and as having vision that brought about products that helped the industry as a whole.

Finally, Jobs is not some sort of Idi Amin, Pol Pot, or Hitler. There is a difference between being an arrogant ass, and a mass murderer, but somehow because so many people here don't like the guy, he's deserving of death. That just bothers the crap out of me. I don't think I've ever seen less class on this site, and to be honest, the blind, deaf, and dumb response by this site's administrators to this thread speaks further volumes about that.
 
Oh the Apple fans..

Extolling the virtues of a Mac over a PC is ridiculous. They do about the same thing and nowdays are made from the exact same parts..There is no crapware on any of my PCs..and came cheaper to boot and have alot more expandability. Also they run more software..

As for this 'common guy' that struggles with the HP - who cares. It's not my problem. It's like extolling the virtues of a mini van on a mustang forum. "OMG don't get a Mustang get a minivan. it breaks down less and you can carry more people. Who needs to run a 11 second quarter mile?! It's so much better! "

What's more amusing is that Apple themselves saw the writing on the wall and instead now makes most of its money from gadgets. And they are very nice gadgets indeed. I own an iphone (on my second now) and I love it.

Actually Jobs was a visionary in the computer field - really changed the lives of almost every computer user. I didn't personally like where the company was taking computing - they are/were turning them into expensive appliances. But I will give the man his props for really making the personal computer a reality.. Even for people who don't like or care about computers..

This might actually be good news for Mac fans - as personally I had expected Apple to kill off its entire Mac division with in the next few years. They would introduce an iOS iMac and just drop the whole 'professional' line which is little then a money sink for them nowadays.

First, I am sad because certainly Jobs is leaving Apple due to is health problems, very likely a returning cancer. I feel sad by the human being, nobody deserves the pain that comes from dealing with this awful decease.

That said, let's not forget the man isn't a saint. He didn't recognize his first child. He was systematically rude and offensive with Apple employees, to the point of some of them just quitted their jobs. He admited that shamelessly stealed ideas and concepts from others to use in their "revolutionary" products. Worse, Apple systematically has abused the flawed US patent system and registered blattantly obvious things like gestures and acted like trolls, because Apple apparently cannot deal with concurrency. The list goes on and on, and all of this was already exposed here and in other tech forums.

And finally I think that Apple got all its money mostly from non-savvy people who thinks computers are home appliances that just need to have a beatiful case.

So, tl;dr: yes, I feel sad for his health, but he's a jerk and technically Apple is just a overhyped and polished turd.
