Dota 2 beta sign ups

Thats disapointing...I didn't like the art style of LoL, but most importantly I felt HoN play much "faster". Not in the sense of the teams stradegy but just how all the units moved around.

Hopefully I will be able to watch some vids when I get home to get a handle on it.

watching a Chinese team play vs a team like Na'vi. it feels like two totally different games.

Chinese tend to farm farm farm. Na'Vi on the other hand is the honey badger of dota teams, and is very successful at dominating games very quickly.

edit: speak of the devil Na'Vi raped in their first game. http://www.dota2.com/tournaments/international/gamesummary/115/

This game looks interesting. Never played LoL, Hon, or Dota. Watching MYM vs. m5 and this match is lasting forever. Do the games typically last this long? And what am I looking at exactly; these guys are dying like flies but the match isn't ending. So I assume there is some type of gold limit that determines the winner or time limit?

Not sure if I can play a game that lasts this long online but it sure looks like fun!

in order to win you must destroy the opponents throne (building in the center of the base)

30 minutes is about average. Some games last over an hour (chinese games tend to do this). Some are shorter, Na'vi ended their first game in 21 minutes.

Yeah....

Game looks too over the top. Stealthing, double damage runes and one-shotting people, buying teleport items and shit. LoL >

M5 v MyM a much faster paced game (as predicted due to a euro v euro setup) but it was a spectacularly one sided match. I don't follow competitive DotA (but I do very much so with HoN) and i'm surprised that MyM allowed M5 to draft DS with AA. That's a great combination with this limited hero pool.

Nobody has gotten one shot in any of these games

Na'Vi (easily the most aggressive professional dota team) vs Scythe is the next game, this is what I've been waiting for :D

@Shlomo: I was really suprised by MYM's picks/bans too. for shame MYM! FOR SHAAAAME.

Well, yes and no. You die very quickly in HoN and DotA, they're both quite punishing games for poor positioning and poor map awareness. I mean, Tiny is quite literally built as a hero to gain an early level advantage and go around oneshotting squishies with a fast PK. Smoke of deceit is a great item introduction I think for DOTA. It wasn't around when I played (like, map version 6.3x and earlier or so) it allows the ability for heroes to roam past wards without detection and acquire some great early game lane advantages. Point is, HoN and DotA don't have a get out of jail free card in flash for every hero. Play smart and aware or get put in the dumpster, that's all there is to it.

Honestly i'm trying to formulate a reply that doesn't involve the words trash, garbage, dumpster, pub, scrub, and noob but it's pretty hard here. Don't feel as though LoL is any better with massive ricing games to the tune of iG v EHOME because your meta is plagued by turtle-lord strategies enhanced by a stupid free blink everyone gets and respawning barracks that do nothing but promote ridiculously long, drawn out games.

Ihave only gotten to watch on my phone, but it is looking good so far.

How limited is the hero pool, this will give us an idea of how far away this game is from release.

From what I hear and can count from the leaked hero pool screenshot theres 46 heroes in this tournament for play. It sounds on the low side so there may be more, I haven't read any confirmation on the pool for sure. I figure DOTA2 can/will be released with 70+ or so and honestly the job of porting heroes isn't particularly difficult because you're creating models and animations, not balancing or designing. All stats and abilities are direct copy and pastes from DOTA. You can churn out heroes quite effectively and I expect the pool to expand very quickly in the coming days of the beta.

right now there are between 1/3 and 1/5 of the original DOTA heroes implemented in dota 2, according to the announcers.

Yea I just saw them destroy the throne. Game play looks very well thought out so hectic! I think I can get into this genre. Not sure if I want to sit playing one match for an hour though. :)

What is the purpose of not killing off the entire team when attacking though? Many times it seemed that the Russian team could have finished off a guy but pulled back. Were they scared of getting baited into a bad situation?

The night vs day buff seemed OP initially but as the game wore on it I began to appreciate it. I can see noobs to the game losing every buff transition effectively increasing the entry level skill level for the game.

The buying items aspect seems a tad bit odd in the middle of a game. I can imagine me being out in the middle of a match and getting chewed out for not having a consumable. But I don't mind power ups in games so I would just have to learn to deal with it. Still looks like the fun outweighs the complexity. I think the day / night buff contributed mightily to the exploding teams.

If I missed a concept I apologize; that was the first time I have seen the genre in action.

Well, come late game with NS + Scepter there is no day/night transition. It's pretty much permanently night time because NS ult stops time and turns it night. It's duration is just about as long as its cooldown so if you keep popping his ult at night time, you extend night by like 3x the length of day.

As for mid-game item buying, learn shop hotkeys and abuse the hell out of the courier, it's there for a reason.

Barracks and towers are more important than killing a support hero, it's also much smarter and a safer move than over extending like you mentioned and having your push ended because of greed. Around these parts, we call moves like that "throwing" the game.

Definitely looks like chaos to people who aren't used to it :p It's very tricky I imagine to make the game look good (spells/textures and everything else) while still keeping it simple enough to be able to tell what's going on in the team battles, I think they did a great job with that.

As far as game length, another thing to consider is that these are pro games. They are played in "normal" mode. Most pub players play in EM (easy mode). Easy mode gives more passive gold to all players, makes towers weaker and die easier. This tends to cause games to go by a bit faster.

edit: On the note of Hon vs Dota vs LoL. I would say the main difference is in the details. Dota's gameplay is more in depth, there's a lot more to learn. Once you've learned it it's great, and I find playing the other games loltastic for not having all of these things (no denying in LoL for instance WTF?). But for new people, it can make learning the game a bit daunting.

Thanks for the insight into the genre so I have a better idea what to look for when watching these matches. Also it's nice to know that the matches can go faster. I agree about the art style of the game, it's very well done and easy to see what is going on.

I can see this game lasting as long as any other Valve franchise on Steam even though Valve didn't make the original. Can't wait for this to come out!

the annonucers said at one point that there were about 1.5 million people streaming the casts.

I'd particularly believe it. Probably upwards over 4-5 million in actuality if you include China-land viewers.

Lets just say that theres enough viewers now that we're restricted to watching the games to Tobi Wan's sexy smooth voice and constant sexual innuendo's. Not sure if that's a good thing ;)

Oh man, some of the best/entertaining HoNcast games were with the BreakyCPK and Tobi Wan duo constantly screaming and tobi being bonkers out of his mind on energy drinks. Tobi ends up always doing shoutcasting work with Breaky for Honcast during the big LAN events. He's been at the last two dreamhack summers and the DYA event in Singapore for HoN shoutcasting.

He's a crazy lil' aussie...

how exactly do you sign up for the beta? Like someone else said - dota2.com redirects to the live stream

I don't have the link saved anymore and I can't find anything in Steam about the beta signup so I dunno.

beta sign up page has been taken down, the link I had doesn't work anymore even if you try to login.

Wow, lame, I tried at 3:40am eastern and it wasn't there either :(. They took it down under 2 hours from the OP then... as I said, lame.

Oh shit, sorry you guys couldn't sign up, but last night, I went to dota2.com BEFORE they started streaming, and it asked me to log into my Steam account (on the dota2.com page) so I did so (PHISHING!!! just kidding), but anyway, it then said, Thank you for signing up for the beta, and then I clicked on the stream and it started loading the matches.

Also, most of you weren't watching the matches as they were LIVE streamed, their site was so hammered, it wasn't loading for everybody, this game is gonna be huge . . . .

I watched most of the first match, it was friggin 53 mins later that I decided to go sleep as it was about 4:50 in the morning here, and the match still wasn't over, lol.

Watching the live stream again, apparently Dota 2 has a pause feature, which LoL doesn't even have . . . .

I watched one of the matches on youtube. As a LoL player, i can't say i'm impressed. The game looks to be smoother, but it also makes it look more unresponsive. Also is just a DOTA map, which I'm already bored of since i play LoL. Personally, I'm looking forward to Dominion as it is actually adding new elements to the genre.

Thanks!

Registered my Steam account to it :D

Knowing my luck, I'm not keeping my hopes too high though, lol

Site must be getting hammered. Logging in is taking forever.

Edit: was just my fail work internet.

After watching these games, I feel that HoN is the far more punishing game. DotA2 seems slow paced and meticulous by comparison, with big teamfights lasting far longer and often only resulting in a couple of hero deaths max. I just didn't see the kind of "stun, stun, stun, dead" play that I tend to see in HoN nowadays. It could be from the extremely restricted hero pool though.

I also have more trouble telling what's going on in DotA2. Perhaps that's just because of the new graphical style, but I know what all these heroes do, and most of the effects just were not very pronounced. Some were OK, like CM's nova and Windrunner's power shot, but other times I just didn't see the big effects that I should have.

Dota 2 does seem rather slow paced, i think that's kind of a welcome change from the wtfpwn nature of HoN and LoL, it adds another layer of strategy to it, you aren't gonna just walk in and just upend the whole other team all by your lonesome, rather your team will have to coordinate especially well to get kills, that's kind of different.

Lately LoL has been a whole "which team uses Flash better" kind of game, it's getting a little old, lol.

I think Tiny's avalanche animation is complete garbage, but for the most part they were pretty solid. Sven's storm bolt stun could be improved upon too, it's not very clear when it's flying through the air. Very difficult to pick it out and disjoint it with manta or PK. I also found that POTM's arrow was pretty hard to see too.

I played a lot of aeon of strife, the predecessor ums starcraft game to dota, and am looking forward to getting back into the genre. Can't wait for dota 2!
