Dell U2412M

i have just said this situation in games but some user have offende me and call me "troll" or "noob" because i see this ghosting in a youtube movie
And now the noobs are they.
Ridicolous !

Hmm, no matter what I do, I cannot get to see the last page of this thread (with 20 posts per page). Just posting this in the hope this solves the "problem". I'll delete it again afterwards (If i can see it, that is)...

EDIT: It worked!.... But can't users delete their own posts entirely/completely?
Forget about it and pretend the post not to be here.

Yes, and if you were a troll and noob back then, nothing has changed.

A cherry-picked photo from a bottom-tier review site isn't convincing anyone. These are the same "reviewers" who said the Acer GD245HQ/GD235HZ was such a great screen and neglected to mention a huge problem with the monitor: There are non-defeatable sharpening halos around all text on colored backgrounds.

Nice reviews.

You still don't know what you are talking about, and you haven't spent any time learning either, so back to the ignore list for you.

Go buy their top pick the AOC E2795Vh 27" MVA panel that apparently has better pixel response than the U2412M. There's your next screen.

What makes me laugh is why you have a vested interest in crapping in a thread for a monitor that you have zero interest in from the start, and argue with actual owners on something they have and you haven't even seen.

I didn't call you that, despite your seeming obsession with bashing this monitor:
I posted:

NO GAMES sorry

Lol, right..... not!

No one was calling you those.

my obsession to ips responsive time is there because i play and i wanted buy it.

the reason because 10E call me "troll" is because i kept to repeat the same comment about a bad ghosting that i saw in the movies and there are 2 users said that U2412 have good responsive time and the ghosting that i saw was only a "tearing effect" or the "30fps off youtube movies"

And now i'm right and they wrong.
LESSNUMERIQUE confirm my opinion ( and now for 10e the review is false because contradicts his ?? )

Sometimes the only users comments is not sufficient because some users fail to see the ghosting at all, other like me are enough sensible to ghosting and i say it.
in this pictures there's tearing but together ghosting ( tearing cant split the object in the screen ).

I respected the 10e user as person but he together other "experts" have offended me without a good reason and for my bad english, dont respect the others different opinions.
No playable monitor is useless for me and i'm sure for many users that buy it thinking to your "good" not correct review about it.

less numerique is a good review, this reviews dont say the particular issues of each monitors because are not in-dept reviews, if u want it look others like PRAD.de with many pages but this not means much correct. Tftcentral, flatpanels and lessnumerique is small reviews but not unreliable.
Prad also say that ML239H have 200:1 contrast ratio and VE278Q have a low responsive time or ZR24W have a good contrast, also PRAD in his reviews dont consider the responsive time and give good vote to a slow monitors whitout any problems.

NOTE: AOC E2795Vh is a faster monitor, and also prad confirm it.

Youtube videos can introduce any number of small artifacts, from cameras or compression. Your assertion that a youtube video could be used for what you're trying to use it for is pretty ridiculous. Crappy cameras have weird ccd scan rates that could introduce tearing easily, flash video compression can introduce plenty of artifacts. It's simply not a good set of data to draw conclusions from.

That said, anyone have any info on the deal others were getting to get this monitor at $320? Any information is welcome, it seems the posters who were talking about it are not replying to my PMs. Any help appreciated! :)

You could always try calling Dell small business on your own and nagging them a little bit. If it's worth a few bucks on the price why not?

Your statement in terms of using any videos or cameras to analyze a monitor is correct. There are too many variables going from an LCD pixel to a CCD/CMOS sensor then back through a compression algorithm and then back through another pixel device.

I guess a 3007WFP is also a bad gaming monitor too:

That's now two monitors where we won't have to worry about useless posts: U2412M and 3007WFP.

Case closed.

If you look hard enough for something you are sure to find it.

I have been gaming on this monitor for countless hours now and there are no issues with gaming. Even though I usually have a keen eye for this sort of thing, I never notice any ghosting or trailing, and I am sure I would have to record a video to find it. I play FPS, RTS, MMO, and simulation flying / racing games.

I have a 2407, 2408 and 2410 and hte u2412 all next to eachother right now powered off 2 GTX 580's and the only thing that is apparent between any of them when gaming is the wide gamut of the 2408 and 2410. The colors look different, and thats it.

The 2412 has a slightly faster response time which you can notice when you switch back and forth between monitors that makes it BETTER for gaming.

That is what I did on Friday. It took a little negotiating but they gave me that price when I said I would buy two right then.

Yeah, I'm going to try that myself once I've made my decision on whether to switch to 3x U2412M's from my 1x 3007WFP-HC.

The AOC is actually faster than the 2412 according to PRAD like senna says. I remember seeing a few high response time values with certain transitions in PRAD's review of the 2412 but I will have to double check. The 2412 being slow makes sense because the rest of this years LED backlit IPS panels have had nearly twice as slow response times (LG IPS2361V vs Dell U2311H) and there have been some major quality differences between the same models.

Compare the important information in DV's reviews with PRAD's and they are usually very similar...

OK, just bought 3x U2412 for my upcoming eyefinity/NV suuround. Got it for $1060 with tax+shipping.
Next up GPUs. Probably 2x 6970 for CF.

Funkdancer, have your monitors improved as well?

edit: spoke too soon. After 2hrs power on time the slight bleed has begun to return. Seems to be related to temperature maybe?

A bit of time has passed, how's your display now?

_Some_ of it did return but it never got back to being as bad as it originally was. I really had to be looking for it a lot more than when it was brand new.

Between sick 11 month old etc, time's been in very short supply, but I replaced my centre screen with new one last night and out of the box the backlight bleed is very similar to my right / good one. There's a fraction at the very top but not enough to be of great concern to me. Very nice uniformity. I will replace left one tonight or tomorrow night. (I am using a monitor stand so there's 15 minutes of work roughly involved.)

I probably wouldn't have worried about returning the screens if it was as per last night pre replacement, but seeing as I had already arranged for two new ones this did work out in my favour.

Dell collections are great about my taking a bit of time to swap screens over, I have got to give them big kudos for their flexibility. I am basically sitting on 5 screens now for just over 1 week, and they're all happy about it.

ps. (edit) everyone, can you please stop feeding the troll? ;)

Thank you.
DV is for kids.
I am knocking on wood - this monitor has a potential of being a monitor of choice for a huge number of users.
May be the U2412 is what the market have been looking for: an affordable good quality standard gamut 24" 1920x1200 IPS.
I believe it will produce a sort of sanitizing effect on this forum.
Hopefully a few zealots which constantly attack this community with their "end of 1920x1200", "dirty IPS look", low contrast delirium, "high quality TN" BS will have rest (let's put it in these words).

Apparently there is a black edition and a silver edition of the U2412M available to European markets. Question is, will the silver edition eventually make its way to International / North American markets as well? Or will it remain exclusive to EU countries?

Yup. The AOC received a satisfactory from Prad and a glowing five stars from DV. Funny disparity. Maybe a fast MVA with 6-bit+FRC is the new TN for gaming? This thread is for sharing info on the U2412M, not arguing anyways (in regards to certain other people).

The U2412M's pixel response is not slow, it's the overdrive that's slightly overcooked, which I mentioned back on page 11. The panel is definitely not AUO M240HW02 V1 slow.

I'm not sure how much it matters. As Snowdog said elsewhere> reality blurs.

Prad summarizes:

1) Short signal delay/input lag of .9 milliseconds, and total "switching time" of 6.5 milliseconds for a total of 7.4ms (switching+input times)
2) Then they have an "overshoot" graph which shows some slightly excessive overshoot or reverse ghosting
3) Snappy for games, with (in practice) some slight, not very noticeable RTC error.

Apologies to Prad for "translating" a part of their German subscribers' review. There is more to that review though than just two stats. It's only a week away for it.

I dunno, I'm over 40 and while I'm no super gamer, I am active and play sports, so my eyes would pick up excessive monitor response issues, and I'm not seeing it. As both the middle and side screen in Tri-finity it's looking like a good gaming screen.

I wasn't even intending on getting the U2412M. I was looking forward to the Samsung S24A850DW PLS screen. But I'm happy with this "digression". The U2412M is a decent, if not good all-rounder. Decently accurate colors, decent (very good for IPS) black levels and contrast, sRGB gamut, sharp text with a fairly balanced AG coating, etc....

OK, just bought 3x U2412 for my upcoming eyefinity/NV suuround. Got it for $1060 with tax+shipping.

That sounds like a good deal. I did that: from 3008WFP to "Trifinity" Dell U2412M+NEC LCD2490 and LCD2690.

What's weird is that you start to notice how the 30" affects gaming due to the vertical size. If you don't sit far enough back you start looking up and down. I went to 2560x1440 on the 30" and it seemed better. Weird.

Check it out and see what you think.

That was my impression as well. Good monitor for office use but for gaming buy something else.

A friend of mine received his U2412M three days ago and he was dissapointedt. I also tried it out.

Lots of overdrive trailing and much back light bleed. He told me that he will send it back.

A bit of time has passed, how's your display now?

It's pretty much the same, i.e not visible unless scrutinising a black screen in pitch darkness. But it does tend to get ever so slightly worse after the monitor has been on for a few hours.

But I am sorry to say that I will be returning the 2412 because of the colour error with blue luminance on my unit (+46%). It's becoming quite noticeable on content with blues and I don't think these monitors are supposed to be like this. I may roll the dice on another 2412 as everything else about it is great.

I think that's an issue with the factory calibration on these screens. The blue channel seems a bit too strong on mine, which is why my blue setting on RGB Custom Color is at 89 versus 96 for Red and 93 for Green.

But if you don't like it and can't fix the problem, send 'er back!

You know you can actually fix the blue by switching to Multimedia picture mode but then there's too much red luminance :(

By any chance have you measured blue luminance on yours? Was it as bad as mine?

I only use standard and custom color mode. Standard has a slightly warm color temperature for white according to my NEC GammaComp colorimeter (OEM I1D2 with custom calibration) but the blue channel is too high, which shows up on pictures.

So I use the Custom Color mode and balance out white color temperature and blue "gain" by lowering blue. I can deal with a slightly warmer (more red color temperature) but I like my greys to be fairly neutral. When I do this the DE94 on Lacie Blue Eye Pro shows as going from 3.8 to 2.5 and the blue goes from 8+ DE94 down to the 5.5 to 5.8 range.

Now my calibrator is not tuned to LED displays, but I use my NEC LCD2490WUXi2 as somewhat of a reference when they are side-by-side.

I will run a calibration with BasicColor which gives me stats/charts on how the blue channel was adjusted, and post a photo/screener of that tonight.

Otherwise what I see is that the darkest of shades are not resolved as well as my NEC, but not to the point where they completely disappear, they are just harder to see and closer to black than they should be to my eyes. Calibration solves this, but most calibration software balances out the darkest shades luminance with the absolute black point of the monitor. Sometimes there are slight errors, and sometimes the calibration software will elevate the black level to go up to ensure the "distance" in luminance with the darker shades is equalized based on your gamma requirements. I don't like this as much because it seems to affect the contrast ratio and dynamic range of the screen. I've seen this mostly with the Spyder2 included software.

BasicColor shows me a difference depending on if I select sRGB gamma versus 2.2. They should be similar, if not identical, but they're not. It also has the option to go with darkest grey shades being either neutral, or closest to the absolute black level (ie. RGB of 000) on the screen.

From what Prad and you have written, I should see the blue channel lowered, especially if I set custom color mode to give me D65 white temp. (ie. 6503K)

Does anyone know if the U2412M supports DisplayPort 1.2? I'm trying to eliminate any possible tearing issues caused by running monitors in a TriFinity setup with differing connection types. If I could just drive all 3 monitors off of one DP out and then daisy chain the rest, I think that would be the best solution, but I've been told you need DP 1.2 for that to work, hence the question.

I would hope it's 1.2 considering it's a brand new design. I am driving mine off my 5870 right now, but with my Dell 3008WFP's cable which I think is 1.1.

Hey all,

I found a way to get in the service menu on the screen. I did it quickly on my lunch break, so bear with me if I am not explicit on what's contained, though I did remember most of what's in there.

Take a PHOTO, not screen shot of the service menu when you first enter it. Changing a setting and breaking the screen will probably void your warranty.

Use with caution and don't hold me accountable. I'm only providing the process, what you do with it is your business. ;)

Similar to the U2311H,

1) Press and HOLD the top TWO buttons simultaneously (ie. one and two at the same time) with the monitor OFF
2) Turn the monitor on and wait for the power LED to go blue and for the screen to show an image then release the buttons
3) Press the top button once and a blue service menu will show up in the top left

Notable items:

Overdrive on/off and Overdrive GAIN, so possibly the ability to tailor OD if the RTC overshoot bugs you (ie. reverse ghosting)

Color temperature settings for the different pre-sets including standard stipulated in Red, Green, Blue settings, ie. 9300K with Red at 240, Green at 235 and Blue at 255 as an example.

Some other settings like burn-in (lcd conditioning I'm assuming)

I'll take a photo tonight so you can see, when I return home.

Awesome. I turned off OD on my NEC2490 right from the beginning. I really couldn't see a benefit and I thought I saw an occasional extra jitter when I was doing lag testing.

Does this mean trolls will shut up? Sadly unlikely but this is great find that potentially addresses another niggle for some.

Hi, I called dell today because I ordered mine about last friday and Purolator called me today telling me I will receive it tommorow. The guy at dell told me that I need to call when I receive the monitor and if the website still says the discount, they will reimburse me the difference. Now, you say that the discount closes on August 16th...is the 16th included in this? Which means that if I receive it at 1PM for example and I call after this, they will give me the discount??

Hopefully, but I think they've invaded the S27/24A850 threads now :D

I'm going to try and change the value for overdrive tonight to OFF and/or a different number. The OD gain is set at 50, so I wonder if lowering it will remove some artifacting. Why not?

They will never know! I'm ninja like that ;)

at the end, not a bad price don't you think?

For Canadian, that is a good price, because even the ZR24W is $429.99 in my area.

Just got my monitor guys. Ordered on August 8th and recieved today.

I used your settings 10e and they seem fine to me.

I've only used it for one hour so far, but the colors are much better on this than on my BenQ V2400W.

Just ordered mine: $1,014.42 for 3 after tax with free shipping and getting the price match. Should receive them on or before the 23rd, so a week or less if that's true. :D

Anybody know if they plan to release a 27" version of this monitor and if it will be 1080?

Hey, I remember trading PMs with you a while back on that V2400W. Glad you like the U2412M now.

Anybody know if they plan to release a 27" version of this monitor and if it will be 1080?

Will be a 27" VA panel type, but it might be nice (P2712H)

Here you go:

dellu2412mservicemenuit.jpg

So it seems there are color temperature settings but no color temperature modes exist in the presets so I'm going to assume that these are modes that roughly correspond to different presets. 6500K probably corresponds to "standard" preset I would guess.

Weird.

The top and second button move you through the menu, the third button selects the item, and the top and second buttons modify the item. The fourth/bottom button seems to do nothing.

Once done you scroll on up to the "exit" menu. The changes will not stick upon reboot, but they will stick upon power save.

Either way, you can leave it in this mode because the other keys work as they did, ie. the 2nd, 3rd and 4th keys on the screen will continue to work.

I tried it with and without the OD. The only real big difference is the slight reverse ghosting on the trailing edge of something with OD on. The OD gain also works to allow you to balance things out for less or more.

What OD setting would you recommend for gaming? Is it even worth messing with if there's a chance of voiding the warranty somehow?

Unless it bugs you, leave it where it is. If you're seeing something, then you can change it.

The more I look for it with cooked/cherry picked tests to amplify the problem, the more I see that it's mostly BS.

The changes get wiped with a re-start of the screen (but not sleep mode and back) but I'd recommend photographing the Service menu settings first just in case.

I tried 40 and 35 and at 35 it was close to the same as having no overdrive. 40 seemed a bit better, but the problem is a lot smaller than those crappy digital versus photos show.
