Dell U2412M

Doesn't make any difference in my experience. I've calibrated CCFL & LED VA, TN, IPS and get the same result on all of them.

How do you know you are getting the same result? It makes a difference when people actually verify against accurate instrumentation.

Off the shelf i1d2 have poor inter unit consistency and bigger errors on non standard back-lighting. OEM version that ship with monitors (like NEC SV/MD Gammacomp branded) are calibrated with that monitor backlight type and will be great for that type of monitor backlight, but will be off on other types. It is the nature of the beast.

One main problem in comparability lies elsewhere: Especially when measuring uncalibrated setups with HCFR (and some other software in the area of TV calibration) the white point handling proves to be quite disadvantageous. Unless the actual whitepoint reaches the internal preset (a problem also for evaluation of display neutrality because the actual whitepoint should of course set the reference point) the transformations from XYZ are not consistent. Chromatic adaptations are also not carried out.

I'm not sure that HCFR is making any mistake in that regard because I calibrated the RGB controls on the monitor using HCFR, and i1Match confirms it as D65. Then after i1Match calibration I measure again in HCFR and it's reading the same result. So I would say the colour reading in HCFR seems to be accurate, at least on this particular monitor.

Still quite bad - even if the grey axis would be neutral... the actual whitepoint is far away from the blackbody curve - not uncommon for a native whitepoint - but if a color temperature preset in Kelvin was choosen this shouldn't happen.

Yeah, there are colour presets on the monitor itself and the one I measured pre calibration in Standard mode is the 6500K setting. I tried 7500K but that is way too blue. It's annoying that they didn't get this accurate at the factory but as you say it's not uncommon. Anyone who understands the rules of additive colour should be able to correct it mostly by eye.

How do you know you are getting the same result?

By comparing calibrated monitors side by side.

Off the shelf i1d2 have poor inter unit consistency

This is true, my first i1LT calibrated to a pink hue and I sent it back under warranty. There were many reports on the forums of this pink hue. The replacement they sent me (i1D2) is producing a neutral white point, confirmed with A-B comparison with the i1LT's profile. Still, I have no way of telling that it's perfectly accurate but to the eye and between monitors it looks excellent. I probably should get one of these to be sure: http://xritephoto.com/ph_product_overview.aspx?ID=943

However in the mean time it does seem like there's been considerable improvement to the uniformity and bleeding especially on the worst screen.

Just a suggestion, there is "LCD conditioning" in the menu which you could run for a few hours and see if that helps.

I scrutinised my panel on a black screen with the lights off and found a slightly brighter spot in the top right corner. So it seems I do have some slight backlight bleeding. But I can not see it at all when I have dim lighting on (25W bulb in the corner of the room - soon to be replaced by a bias light behind the screen).

@sonic_blue

any idea if the retail x-rite i1display pro is any good ?

The OEM one w/ 3rd party software is like crazy expensive through chromapure or similar.

Ah, nice find, thanks for that - I will let it run some. I still haven't had time to try my replacements, but the current ones have actually continued to improve somewhat.

I'm working from home today after I got hit by a car who failed to give way on my bicycle not far from home (I'm 100% ok, carbon fibre bicycle is not) on my way to work, so do get the benefit of the triple goodness of the U2412Ms. I'm very happy with how they work for programming / web app development.

Sorry I have no idea. On paper it should be better than the i1D2, but no HCFR support means no TV calibration which is a dealbreaker for me.

Just a data point.

I ordered this on Saturday, July 30 -- 2-day air, full price.
They estimated delivery at Friday, Aug 5.
On Aug 4, they changed the ETA to Wed, Aug 10
Today, on Aug 9, they changed the ETA to Monday, August 15.

Way to go Dell!

I just got another automated e-mail ... my order is now delayed until Thursday, August 18. I wonder what's going to happen when midnight August 17 rolls around.

Has anyone else ordered Dell Home U.S.?

You can change the two top "quick keys" under the "personalization" menu from the main OSD interface, ie. the first screen that appears when entering the OSD. Defaults are "brightness/contrast" and "preset modes" but you can change one (or both) to "inputs" if you want.

Ah that's great news, thanks!
Now I'm just hoping for a rebate on Dell Belgium soon :)

Has anyone else ordered Dell Home U.S.?

Ordered mine from Dell Ireland on the 5th of August.

Delivery estimates so far:

  • #1 - Aug 11 2011
  • #2 - Aug 15 2011
  • #3 - Aug 17 2011
I hope I'll have the monitor by early October

I finally ordered mine as well at 314€ from Dell Belgium :)

Hopefully they won't delay the delivery as well ;-)

i ordered mine on Tuesday. It was estimated for 8/18 delivery. it is now shipped and estimated to deliver on 8/17. I'm from Ca. Weird to see so many changes in delivery times.

They moved mine back another week. Stupid.

I canceled - if anyone can help me get it through small business and for a low price I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Anyone have both a U2412M and a Dell 3007WFP-HC and able to compare a few basics like color quality, response time, and black levels between them? I'm debating going to 3x U2412M for surround and selling my single 3007WFP-HC if I like them... :D.

Thanks LOLANG! I just ordered two today from your contact. Even though there's a big debate about whether it really is better than the u2410, the price certainly makes it a win in my books.

I am currently using LG 32LD450 (ISP) as my monitor. Just placed an order for u2412M to pair it up with it for some light photo editing. Will continue using 32LD450 for surfing and gaming but if u2412M is realy great then I might just get 2 more in the future for a 3-monitor setup.

Lolang, thanks for the deal!

Just placed an order via Dell Small Business, the estimated delivery date is 8/22.

Thanks for all the information in this thread.
I am just waiting for LOLANG to get back to me so can I can order two of these.
It will be interesting to see how they look compared to my NEC 3090wqxi. Dell is a pain to deal with sometimes but I still have a Dell 1901FP monitor that is still chugging along after all these years.

I just recieved my U2412M today (Thanks LOLANG for the contact!).

I set it up next to my U2311H..... the one thing that stands out, is the fact that the whites on the 2412M look "colder" (maybe bluer?). My 2311H whites now actually seems to look slightly pinkish next to the 2412M (maybe due to my eyes becoming acustomed to the bluer / colder whites).

I remember having the same color with the first 2311H that I got... I sent it back (for some other reasons unrelated to the whites) , and the replacement I got had a softer / warmer white.

Are all the 2412M's like this? Is it due to the LEDs?

Should I return this and get another one (which might have a warmer white)?

Sorry if I can't be more specific... unfortunately I'm no videophile, and don't have a colorimeter to provide any more details.

(btw, I did tweak the 2412M settings to match what 10e posted here).

Thanks!

Thanks to LOLANG, I also got my monitor 2412 also today along with the hdmi to dvi cable for my laptop. You don't have to know deeply about monitors to know that it looks too good, much better than my Lenova Think 22 inch monitor at work. I am very glad I returned the LG 23 inch 1920x1080 for $229.00 last week, once I luckily stumble by this thread. That LG is so vertically challenged.

You can further change them. My settings work for me, and your panel might have a stronger blue channel than mine. Hard to say.

If the panel is good in all other aspects like pixel defects and backlight uniformity, I wouldn't return it. Those things are much harder to fix than a white that you can adjust.

I get what you are saying by a slightly harsher/colder characteristic to the white. I'm waiting to pick a more W-LED suitable colorimeter before I completely pass judgement though.

Mine arrived few hours ago.
So far (sorry my english):
- I have side to side with a u2410, they have the SAME AG for those concerned.
- Contrast seems better but in a pure black image or very dark game/movie they are almost the same
- Much better input lag vs u2410 without game mode
- Same uniformity, which was good. But without the subtle green to pink in whites.
- Still not sure about response time, didint test much but it shows reverse ghosting and artifacts vs u2410.
- No dithering detected.

And i dont know what else :p, you guys can ask me.

Is the 2412 the successor to the 2410 or is this a lower model offering and the 2410 is still going to be around?

I'm not sure that HCFR is making any mistake in that regard because I calibrated the RGB controls on the monitor using HCFR, and i1Match confirms it as D65. I don't mean the calibration to D65 but the incorrect handling if an other whitepoint (like in the standard mode you have measured) is given. The actual whitepoint isn't considered (only for normalisation of the values) - all transformations take place on basis of the choosen whitepoint preset.

would a spectrophotometer like the I1Pro be a better instrument to measure color on an W-LED as well as the wider gamut screens available nowadays?
Yes. The EOD2 ist internally corrected against a CRT and 72% NTSC CCFL LC screen. Apart from quite big problems with inter instrument deviations unselected EOD2 have, this leads to some errors. Not as high as with WCG-CCFL or RGB-LED screens because the spectrum is not as "sharp".

The new EyeOne DisplayPro should be a good colorimeter. It features anorganic interference filters which have a better matchting regarding the 2 degree CIE standard observer (still not completely but absolute errors will decrease (in case of a correction => spectrum mismatch) and it also has a more complex correction matrix handling). I would recommend to wait which software will support which versions of this very interesting probe.

Best regards

Denis

However in the mean time it does seem like there's been considerable improvement to the uniformity and bleeding especially on the worst screen. I'll check it out at home tonight, however was a late light last night so may not get a chance to do shots until tomorrow night (UTC+10).

I just wanted to say that the tiny amount of backlight bleeding that was in the top right corner on my monitor has disappeared! I'm staring at a pure black raster with the lights turned off from 2m back and there is nothing there, it's totally uniform.

Funkdancer, have your monitors improved as well?

edit: spoke too soon. After 2hrs power on time the slight bleed has begun to return. Seems to be related to temperature maybe?

no HDMI for use with a console is kind of a dealbreaker. Hopefully the U2412HM that will be released later will be more full featured.

I didn’t want to wait so I called Dell small business and told them I wanted the price others are getting here and they gave it to me. So far they gave me an Aug 22 delivery date.

I was planning to use the NEC Spectraview II which is just the X-rite i1Display2 and the Eye-One Match 3 software to calibrate them. The Spectraview software makes it really easy with my NEC but I am not familiar with the Eye-One software. Anyone have suggestions or hints for this noobie when using it?

Hi All,

This monitor sounds promising and hits all the things I'm mindful of:

16X10
sRGB
Gaming
Affordability.

Could someone help me out by PMing Lolang's Dell Rep info, I PMed him but would love to order the monitor ASAP.

Thanks,

SwnSng

Dutch :)
Eventhough a dane would likely be able to understand some words of it.
