Actually I'm new to the whole series. Any advice, tips, tricks? I got the game with the Quakecon pack.

Doesn't really follow the storyline from Fallout 1&2, aside from a few easter eggs.

Other than that, patch the hell out of it, go through the Fallout Nexus for any decent mods you may want, and enjoy? :)

Put lots of points in small guns and repair. And use VATS all the time. And save often and in different save slots so you don't get stuck out by a bunch of super mutants with no stimpacks and get rocked repeatedly and are unable to escape.

Many people, like me, will say the old ones are better. But if you play the new ones first, don't bother with the old ones. You had to be there when they were fresh :p

If you find a gas station with vr machines but no quest for same, don't use them as it skips a lot of missions. Otherwise enjoy. You also might want to search for how to maximize stats

Make sure it's patched to the latest version, look at turning off vsync, removing the mouse acceleration and upping the FOV with config tweaks to the ini file, makes it 10x more playable.

stick to looting 5:1 caps to weight ratio

take everything with no weight

man what i would give to forget this game and play through it again :)

I actually liked the gun mechanics in fo:nv more. But you might want to load up on mods.

Trying to figure out what all these letters me. I know the CMD means your limbs, Rad is your radiation level, wtf is DP? Damage percentage? Trying to find a guide. Sometimes I hate it when words are abbreviated and not explained.

Id suggest walk everywhere and explore every where you can never tell what you might find over the hill on the right.
Do save often, I usually crash 3 4 times when playing.
Check out the mods they really improve the game and make it much more fun.

CND is the condition of your weapon, Rad is your radiation level and I'm not sure where you're seeing DP at. Do you mean AP or DR?

edit: And CND could also mean the condition of your limbs if you're looking through the status menu of your pipboy.

Please for the love of God dont start with Fallout 3. We don't need someone running around with a tainted mind thinking that is Fallout canon.

btw, the higher the difficulty you set, the more xp you get. if you find the game fairly easy, make it harder and level up faster.

As someone mentioned earlier, save and save often. Fallout 3, well...that shitty Gamebryo engine, is notorious for crashing for the slightest thing. Alas, that is the only thing I can recommend at this time since it's been so long since I've played the game. All I remember is having a so much fun being a newbie slowly feeling my way through the wasteland...it was such a great experience. /shedtear

Also it's good to save to a new file each time you save. At least that's what I always have done and thus I haven't experienced much save corruption that some people have complained off.

learn the quick save key and use it often.

might wanna limit the game to 1-2 cores depending on the processor.

make a save right when you get out of vault 101 so you don't have to go through that whole thing again, and this save will allow you to tweak your SPECIAL and stats.

So far I haven't had the game crash on me at all. The game auto saves a lot as well but I'm still saving with every chance I get.

Give it time, you'll get to know the CTD screen quite well! ;) Seriously,as much as I've enjoyed the game,it has the buggiest engine I've ever encountered. Since you've just started,it's early to recommend mods, but once you've finished the main quest and any official DLC you choose to play, check out the Quest for Heaven mods by Firelady, they put most of the DLCs to shame.

Can someone at a quick glance tell if there's something seriously wrong with my load order here? And can wrong load order cause crashes?

It's a big big game. You'll get a hundred hours out of it easily.

Here's a tip.

Once you get to Tenpenny Tower you'll get to decide whether or not to help the resident's get rid of the ghouls or to help the ghoul's move into the tower. Take a few extra minutes to make a final decision. If you kill the ghoul's after you tell the resident's that they are moving in you'll lose access to all the vendors in the building.

I did this and it took me a couple hours to figure out what had happened. Had to reload an old save game. Lost a little progress in the process.

If you go the combat route, make sure you load up on repair and small guns, high small guns ensures you can use sniper rifles long range outside of VATS.
I loaded up

small guns
lockpick
repair
speech
science

There's an abundance of XP in the world, so don't be too concerned about a failed quest here or there.

And use VATS all the time.

Disagree. Early in the game zoom in and fire and use VATS only when something is close or when it gives you a 95% chance of hitting something. Later on when your skills (and action points) are high you can use VATS more exclusively.

HDD crashed with about 25 hours into this game...I can't bring myself to start all over again. :(

If you are ready to have a bit of a hard time at the beginning, don't invest much into small guns and rather right away energy weapons. I did this the second and all other characters after that, and although it was PITA sometimes at the beginning, I ultimatley saved valuable points that I could invest other stats.

I always start with the Science, Medicine and Energy weapon stats. Ill usually do Repair every other level up.

I beat this a while back and had intended to do some of the DLC but never got around to it but maybe I should. Is New Vegas worthwhile?

New Vegas is not a DLC for Fallout 3. And yes the DLC are worthwhile except for Mothership Zeta IMO.

I thought Anchorage was worse in my opinion. It was mostly just a straight corridor shooter sequence, and this isn't exactly the games strongest area.

Newest Vegas isn't DLC, but it is better in every way, unless you prefer the setting and writing style of FO3 more. FO3 has a more desolate wasteland type feel.
