What EA will lose if Battlefield 3 remains off Steam

Editorial from Ars Technica:

"Plenty of PC gamers sit down each night without knowing what they want to play. Instead, they log into their Steam accounts, see what other people are playing, then jump into a multiplayer game. In many cases, they buy widely played games simply to be part of the community, or based on positive reviews from friends. Steam isn't just a store, it's also a meeting place. EA may have good reasons for keeping Battlefield 3 away from Valve's service, but the company is still going to lose out in goodwill—and possibly in sales."

Seems all too convenient that Steam is suddenly this unreasonable and unflexible beast as soon as EA relaunches its own download service. Keeping everything off Steam while leaving the other DD platforms alone makes it easier to save face, especially when Steam utterly eclipses the userbases of those other platforms.

BF3 is on every digital distribution service EXCEPT Steam... must be EA's fault because they want it to be Origin exclusive.

Here comes the Valve Defense Force.

This is exactly how my wife games. She sees who's playing what, and if she doesn't want to play what they're playing, she goes off and plays Terraria or something like that.

EA is also the only publisher who has an issue with the way Valve runs Steam.

i wonder how many people will NOT purchase because it's not on steam. i see bf3 being a title that i can't pass up no matter where it's offered. poll time?

People who decide what they are going to play based on their friends list activity are not gamers. It's like facebook games with better graphics. You know chicks and teenagers...

Who gives a shit

Do we need another shitty thread about this?

If you wanna play bf3 you can't take your happy asses to the store and buy the fucking dvd? Or get it from amazon with release day delivery?

OMG ITS NOT ON STEAM OMG MY FRIENDS LIST WHAT ARE THEY PLAYING..

I would never buy any MP game on steam anyway that doesnt require steam which is the same for me cuz all steam games that have mp suck anyway.

I must live in a different galaxy.

Except they only took issue with it as soon as they launched Origin after years of not having an issue with it. Coincidence much?

Even Activision, of all publishers, seems to be fine with Steam.

I'm pretty sure I'll be buying BF3 on Gamersgate, I have a few friends I converted from console that are going to be playing.

Right Side: Blah Blah
Left Side: Blah Blah

Me: Enjoying BF3

+1, and I'll expand:

"Gamers" endlessing circlejerking with each other over idealogical STEAM/DRM purity on the forums.

Meanwhile, I'll be actually playing games, enjoying myself. Have fun with each other, I'd recommend bringing a towel.

Activision doesn't have its own digital distribution platform that it has just repackaged and trying to flog like left-handed hammers. If Activision did decide to launch its own service you watch how fast COD would vanish from Steam...

I do encourage people to buy BF3 through Gamersgate and others and show EA just taking its titles off Steam doesn't meant everyone will just flock to Origin by default.

I hope Origin fails abysmally because straight out of the gate it is treating non-US customers like shit by not extending any one of its recent attention-seeking sales to us.

Probably not many. Lots of people are going to say they're not going to buy it, but when it comes time and thats what all of their friends are playing, they'll bite.

What? Are you saying that all MP games available through Steam suck? Surely you can find some that you like...

I view this thing the same way I view my consumption of video entertainment. If a studio wants to monetize my viewership, their content needs to be on Netflix, streaming. If it's not, well that's their business, but they're not going to see any income from my household.

EA want's me as a customer, their games need to be available on Steam, with the other 200+ titles in my library.

I have a 6+ year consumer relationship w/ Steam and quite frankly they've always treated me right as far as I can remember. EA, on the other hand, has: Shutdown servers. Made patching a total fucking nightmare. Embraced moronic DRM schemes that locked me out of my purchase. Required the creation of who the fuck knows how many accounts over the years, and to date is the only entity to allow my account information to be compromised.

So no, EA has done little to earn my trust and done lots to erode what little they earned.

Im disappointed that it wont be on Steam but ill pick up a retail dvd(havent done that in years btw). No big deal really. Not really concerned with the blame game either. Like others have said, Ill be enjoying BF3 while people will still be arguing about Steam Vs Origin.

It makes me sad BF3 isn't on steam due to EA wanting 100% of the DLC money. Quite frankly as a PC gamer iv never given a shit about the DLC nonsense forced on us because of the console user base. If they spent more time finding different ways to promote origin rather than just omitting it from steam, they'd make more money. Why couldn't they charge steam users $65 for the game and sold it for $50 on Origin. That would make steam look like the greedy entity and still make a shit ton of money from every possible source. Then people might "gasp" see a benefit of Origin instead of just another stupid DD service run by a company no one trusts. Instead they rob themselves of potential sales and less people flocking to Origin. As a company they should be wanting every sale in any way possible, otherwise their share holders should take negative action against them.

The other reasons they gave I call bs too. It should take no more effort to update/put stuff on steam than their own service. Its probably no more complex than uploading a file to a ftp server and waiting a little bit for steam to verify its not malicious. MMO's are on steam for christ sake and they need more patching than a static fps that might get dlc/expansions every 6months to a year.

I dont like/play source based games, I played l4d until the community/valves shitty servers/netcode ruined it.

Only games I have that require steam but have nothing to do with valve and ARE MP are cod mw2 and cod BO and I don't really like them lol.

I do however like steam for things like free SP games I can add that come with a video card and SP games for 5 bux.

Like LIMBO i wanna play this, 10 on steam DL good deal I like that, however I just wouldn't buy a MP on steam if I didn't have to.

Having one more game I can download and in my "library" and on steam isn't a benefit to me or a deal breaker, especially WHEN THE GAME ISN'T a valve game lol and I have to run steam to play it?? That's not a benefit to me or a convenience. I have friends too but I could give a shit what they are playing. If I wanna play BC2 i just in any number of vents/ts3 and play, I go to my servers I want to play...

Why can't you just buy the BF3 in retail DVD form and load it into your Steam account?

EA gets a cut of the retail and you have the game on Steam, or have I missed something here?

I'm sure BF3 will do terrible in sales because it's not on Steam. Just like Blizzard games.

You'll still have to use an EA account(on-line of course), and a lot of people don't want to. They just want it tied into their Steam account like the majority of other games. I, myself, don't care too much since I already have an EA account for several other games.

I don't buy new games on steam anyway, almost always more expensive than the store, I use steam for sales and for Indy titles mostly, I have very few new games on steam.

I will be getting BF3 irrelevant of steam or not, if Valve want my money for a brand new launch like that then they have way more to fix first than expanding their catalogue, reasonably prices for starters, and preorder bonuses don't count in my book, and also release the game at the same time as elsewhere, I understand that this is a higher standard than I hold B&M stores too but they have no option if the game is shipping over here, Valve have the ability to arrange global release dates and until that happens it's a massive turn off for any day 1 purchases (Read: Day 3 purchases for the UK)

Great article, I enjoyed reading it, I pretty much agree with everything in it.

Steam 4 Life.

Lack of steam is not going to prevent my purchase, but I am going to buy the game in physical form then just tie that into the steam launcher. I want to avoid origin, I have had terrible experiances with EA's download manager so far.

Bnet has been around for a long time. EA is sure to lose some sales not having it on Steam.

Bnet store and accounts have not been around very long, just under 2 years. I don't see tons of thread with people going apeshit that bnet only sells Blizzard games and DLC.

Blizzard has earned gamer's trust, just like Valve, meanwhile, EA shits on us all.

You stand there, beshitted, and defending EA, amusing, to say the least.

Afraid I don't place much trust in Corporations.

They'll lose a bunch of whiny people. It's a game, if you don't want the program that comes with it, tough.

Good to know that you'll bend over without complaint. At least nobody can accuse you of being a whiner.

You surely do take it like a man, sir.

Is that all you say? Bend over? Swallow? Your extent of the English language must be very low.

Glad to know that.

"assume" makes an ASS out of U and me. Stop making assumptions.. because like your name, you fail at it.
