Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, one of the better regarded PS3 exclusives released in 2009. Dark Souls will be available on both 360 and PS3 this time around. Early reviews have stated that neither version has any distinct differences, however the 360 version does allow for installation to hard drive.

Dark Souls Wiki - Made by the same people who created the Demons Souls Wiki. Pretty sparse right now, but it should get filled up with lots of information as soon as the game hits. There is lots of information on the site about classes and general information, however.

Yeah I think I'll preorder this. Doesn't Amazon only charge you when it ships?

FYI - this isn't an Amazon specific deal. If you pre-order the game from anywhere, you get upgraded to the CE edition. Technically, there is no CE edition--it's just the pre-order bonus IS the CE edition.

Bump.

I was wondering what console you guys will buy dark souls on, I'm used to the ps3 controller for this style of gameplay, but I bet the 360 version will be smoother in framerate and better resolution.

for example when red dead redemption was released it was 720p on 360 640p on the ps3.

it really depends on the dev and the game
and it is namco...

PS3, and Demon's Souls was a wonderful game.

Definitely interested in this, i'm interested in seeing how the Japanese press review this game. Hopefully our American reviewers get an import copy, that's what they did with the first game, and then previewed that for us.

Wasn't Demon's Soul a PS3 exclusive? I'd say it'll be better on PS3 or at least the same.

Definitely looking forward to the reviews/previews.

Demon's Souls was excellent.

Demon’s Souls is a game that will make you into a man. A scrawny fourteen-year-old, after two hours with this game, will be grooming his muttonchops and ready to ship off on the next boat to fight the Kaiser. If you are already a man, it will make you into some sort of bizarre double-man. What’s that you say? You’re a woman? You don’t want to be a man? Too bad. Too bad. That’s the Demon’s Souls way.

You’ve probably heard that Demon’s Souls is hard. Pshh. Lots of games are hard. Some are even harder than this one. The difficulty is not the point. What sets Demon’s Souls apart is the way that it doesn’t just kill you, but also stomps on your genitals when you’re down. And it will make you realize that that’s what you needed all along.

It’s a lot like life. Sometimes in life you win, and sometimes the giant armored skeleton stabs your face off because the flying mantis monster you didn’t even see shot you in the back with a spike at just the wrong time. And when that happens in life, do you respawn at the same spot and carry on like nothing happened? NO, asshole. You go back to the beginning of the level, leaving all your hard-earned souls out there on the pavement, and you fight your way back. And you learn a lesson from the whole thing, because you should have been wearing your Thief’s Ring, now shouldn’t you? That’s life.

The trend in hard games these days is to unlock “Easy” mode for you once you’ve died enough times. Do you think Demon’s Souls does that? Do you think Demon’s Souls is so much as aware of the concept of “Easy” mode? NO IT IS NOT. If Demon’s Souls even knew we were talking about “Easy” mode, it would come over here and kick the shit out of all of us. And we would deserve it.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Have I told you about the online elements? At any time when you’re in Body form, another player from anywhere else in the world can invade your game and murder you to regain his own body, or just to keep you on your toes. This happens when you’re in the middle of fighting armies of unthinkable monsters that are probably already three-quarters of the way towards killing you. And no, you cannot opt out of this feature! This is what you signed up for when you agreed to be a man.

When this happened to me — when a guy strolled into my game like it was Taco Bell and exploded my torso, costing me my body and all my progress in the level — was I mad? No, because I was too busy being in awe at how ****ing hardcore the experience was.

Now, don’t let this dissuade you. Demon’s Souls is a pitiless master, but let it never be said that it is not fair. The game rewards handsomely those who stand up to it, and the greater the challenge, the greater the glory.

What the hell are you waiting for?

^^^ Is that a copy & paste from the original Demon's Souls thread?

That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Haha that was classic. :D

Thanks for bumping this it reminded me I NEEDED to pre-order this.

Eh, Demons Souls actually wasn't very hard. It was just really poor at giving you any sort of information on anything. Virtually every enemy you fought could be killed rather easily provided you knew just what the hell it was you were supposed to be doing.

The thing is, the only way to do this was trial and error and you had to have picked a build that actually opened up the options to handle these things. So if you played through it the first time and did not pick a build that opened well or poorly invested when you leveled up you could really quickly paint yourself into a corner and be royally screwed.

My original build was a dual katana option that speed up once he had the proper equipment and was a PVP master. I hardly died once the initial phase was over. A friend of mine built up a sorcerer with a magic blade and pretty much walked all over the game.

If you didn't stock up on either magic or arrows, some parts of the game were hard. However if you did you could simply shoot your way through the harder parts, and some boses, and nothing could even touch you.

And if you bothered with the later "harder" play throughs, it was sad. You should have died faster but since you knew exactly where the hell everything was and exactly how to fight everything even though some things were now "insta dead" it was still fairly hard to lose since the odds of you doing something dumb enough to even get hit were pretty much nill.

It's almost a certainty that the PS3 version will be technically superior.

I'm a multiplatform gamer, usually get Xbox versions for multiplat games, but I'm getting DS for the PS3, no doubt.

Release date was pushed back to sept. 22nd.

Only a week more wait, oh well its only a month away!

For general multi games the 360 version is better, but for games that were originally built up for the PS3 the PS3 version is a lot better. Get it on the PS3, the PS3 also has a pretty good community for Demon Souls so that's what I'll be watching....

The community is amazing for Demon's Souls. I don't think I've ever seen a group of gamers get along so well and be so helpful. I hope it stays that way for Dark Souls.

Multiplatform games aren’t always better on 360. Darksiders (pre-360 patch) and Dragon Age: Origins proves their might be exceptions time to time.

The first time anyone invaded my game I freaked the fuck out and tried my best to avoid them. Turns out he just invaded my game to help me kill shit. I was like  at first then :D.

I loved this game. I haven't played it in almost a year. I should start a new character and give it a whirl again.

I think this will be the first collectors edition game I'll ever get. I want art book! Oh and the strategy guide will def come in handy.

Looks like the Dark Souls starting classes have been revealed.

Warrior: A fearless warrior and weapons expert with high strength, dexterity.

Knight: You start as a low ranking knight with high HP and solid armor. You're not easily toppled.

Wanderer: The aimless wanderer has high dexterity. He/She wields a scimitar.

Thief: Guilt-ridden, the thief deals high critical hits and has a Master Key.

Bandit: Savage, but with high strength, the bandit wields a battle axe.

Hunter: The hunter wields a bow and arrows; perfect for close-range combat. However, this class is vulnerable to magic.

Sorcerer: Trained at the Dragon School, they cast soul sorcery.

Pyromancer: They are armed with a hand axe and can cast fire spells.

Cleric: The cleric casts healing miracles and wields a mace.

Deprived: The deprived class starts the game with only a club and plank shield. He has no clothes.

So, which class will you guys choose? I started Magician in Demons Souls and followed up with Hunter on a second run. I'm almost thinking Cleric this time around. Or maybe the "Deprived" just for a truly harrowing survival experience.

Pyromancer sounds pretty cool with the magic and melee aspect. I usually like to play hybrids when jumping into a new game to get a taste of every aspect.

meh starting class really didn't mean much in demon's soul
i think it will be the same in dark soul meaning starting class won't mean much after starting area

I got a thing for Knights so that's probably what I'll choose but the Wander makes me think of Drizzt (probably cuz of the scimitar). I think I might be doing multiple runs on this one. I always meant to with Demon's Souls...

True enough. I actually hope they make it so every character doesn't end up exactly the same as they did in the first. I'm not a roleplayer myself but it got really boring seeing everyone in the same exact gear and using the same exact combat sequences in the first game especially in PvP.

Did they ever release any information about co-op in Dark Souls? I always felt that Demons Souls would've made for an amazing co-op game if it were better implemented instead of having your buddy kill himself so you can play together. I'd go out and buy a copy of this game for all my friends if they implemented a true co-op feature.

Yeah they need a good co-op and a shit ton of crazy different looking loot.

I played Royal in Demon's Souls, which started at SL1. However, he also started with the MP regen ring, which was arguably better than most other starts.

Like it's already been said, if Dark Souls ends up being very similar, the starting class won't matter much. I'll probably go with Deprived just to add to the initial frustration of the first few areas.

They won't implement a standard co-op system because that's not the point of the game. From Software said they don't want you and 3 other buddies just chattin away about how your day was while blasting through the game.

It's about begging for help and having a another random survivor come in who may or may not have your best interest at heart.

we'll see how it turns out, but the devs said that they are trying to make the game in a way that you have to play more of a specific role/style. There are also a few more starting classes this time, and they seem more specific than Demon's Souls, which had classes that were more like guidelines, or a "push" in a certain direction.

Here's a tubedub I made of the gamescom trailer:

and here is a spanking new trailer out yesterday. Dark Souls did their own tubedub, so to speak. Featuring the song "The Silent Comedy" by Bartholomew:

The servers won't be split into regions this time. NA, European and Asian players will all play together. But if you want to play against Japanese players, you need the PS3 version. Because Dark Souls is PS3 exclusive in Japan.

I agree it should be the most technically accomplished version since it's the lead platform. I thought Demons Souls had nice graphics but I'm hoping with its surprise success and Namco's financial backing, From steps it up even more for their next game. The videos I've seen look incredible. Bosses are really amazing in Dark Souls. Which is saying a lot because they were so good in Demons Souls.

I'm thinking Thief, Sorcerer, or Pyro.

I started DS as a Thief and it was really hard. I switched to Royal.
Cleric could be interesting. Deprived looks like the nightmare difficulty. No thanks. :D

Definitely on the PS3. I hate having to pay to play my games multiplayer.

Considering not even getting gears 3 because of this.

I'm definitely gonna buy this Day 1 if the reviews are that it's as good as the first game.

It's definitely worth my money too.
