I dedicate this thread to what Skyrim SHOULD bring from Oblivion, and I offer...

GLARTHIR!

His quest was by far the defining moment of Oblivion. Let me offer you a youtube video:

It is hard for me to think about anything oblivion did better than morrowind or daggerfall except for graphics and perhaps horses.

Combat. I loved killing Dagoth Ur by just smashing the left key, Almelexia same thing(fuck sunder is pro :p) and every other enemy as well. Oblivion was more fun with blocking and then attacking and magic working better.

Oblivion is better combat wise, but still not what I want to see in Skyrim. There's so much more potential in the combat system than Oblivion ever managed. I'd rather Skyrim take a leaf out of some other action, hacknslash and RPG games than copy/paste Oblivion's combat.

Everything I've seen in Skyrim so far is a step above Oblivion so I don't really know. I would like to see a Dark Brotherhood quest line in the new game.

Oblivion's combat is a step in the right direction over Morrowind. Skyrim's combat looks like it will go farther into the right direction. Both games need some NPC populations. The Imperial City is a ghetto formed inside ancient ruins. But overall, Skyrim should be taking most of it's stuff from Morrowind.

Other than the Dark Brotherhood, I can't think of too much for Oblivion. Graphic improvements are obvious as well as increase in AI (though again there is a lot of room for improvement with Oblivion too).

How about a repair hammer hard case (gold plated) DLC!!!

This reminds me, it should bring more voice actors. Having 5 voice actors to represent thousands on NPC'S was inexcusable

Actually, I'd like to see some Daedra, Hero of Cyrodil, Sheogorath action. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go play the expansion.

Skyrim design director Todd Howard said that the streamlining of some of the game's systems compared to previous Elder Scrolls games is not about increasing accessibility for new players, but removing confusion for everyone.

For Skyrim, Bethesda has reduced the number of statistics and eliminated certain skills, like Hand to Hand. It wasn't about dumbing things down though, as Howard said that the Elder Scrolls game sold well enough without stripping the complexity out of them.

What Bethesda was trying to avoid, he said, was putting players in a situation where they felt they'd made bad choices. "What happens in Oblivion is you start the game, play for three hours, and then think 'I want to start over, I chose wrong.' So we'd like to sort of alleviate some of that. I also think the controls work better [too] ... it's more elegant."

Two words: horse armor (ideally as a $10 DLC)

:D

Fast travel, the mod community, a dark brotherhood quest line. Facial animations, they were an over exaggerated mess in IV, but they were better than nothing.

Not sure why everyone keeps mentioning horses. Due to fast travel, and how slow they were, horses were next to useless after a certain level without pack animal and/or speed mods.

Apparently fast-travel breaks immersion.

I think that video was one of the worst things I've ever seen humanity create besides this:

At least the laughing dogs I can laugh at simply because the idea that someone invested time and effort in making something so shit is hilarious to me. That Oblivion video is just beyond kitsch and has actually offended me with how crap it is.

heh, I just went along into the discussion. Any video that starts with that character automatically causes my brain to shift on to other things.

I can understand that sentiment. However, the beauty of fast travel, is that one does not need to use it at all should one not feel like it. It is in no way required to play TES IV.

Fast travel is a can of worms topic. I don't have strong opinions on it, but were you trying to stir the pot there?

Make it have a form of transportation like silt striders but also allow fast travel. In Oblivion youu had to use fast travel because there was no transportation from one city to the next :/

Mark and Recall, Silt Striders, and boats were perfect, and they didn't even break immersion in Morrowind.

I never found Mark and Recall or even Levitate to be BS. Then again I only used them when I had to, some people used it all the time and ruined quests(recalled/levitated over the boss that you had to get past). But like I said before, its your game, your choice and they should just allow it to be in the game again. Or make a restriction like in Mournhold where there was no levitate in a lot of areas.

They should bring back the ability to jump hundreds of feet at a time, that was AWESOME!

Not really, was not even the first person to bring it up. Outside of fast travel perhaps, only just perhaps, being a symptom of consolification, I will admit never understanding the discontent expressed for it by a certain few. Especially when they really don't have to use it at all to play the game. Besides, it has been a couple years since I heard anyone really complain about it with any vigor. I thought the can of worms was mostly empty at this point.

In any case I hope it makes it into, or is modded into Skyrim. I don't like to walk back and forth dozens of times between the same few towns to complete quests, or back and forth from my house or the shops to store/sell my loot. Would rather use fast travel in those situations.

Yeah I agree. As much as people say fast travel shouldn't affect people who dont want it... it does. It takes a lot of the joy out of wandering across the world when you know in the back of your head you could just open the menu and fast travel. A hardcore mode where you select at the start of the game that you dont want to be able to fast travel would solve a lot of the problems.
