Been digging on this, but my Google Fu is weak today in regards to this.

1. Google Maps appears to be dependant upon having a data connection (unless you plan your route and it caches before you leave your house). And no, I don't want to tether to my smart phone.

2. There are 3rd party apps, but it appears their desire to keep up to date is lacking (co-pilot is using 5 year data in some areas). Secondarily, I could buy a GPS for the price of the app in most cases.

Is there any way to make Google Maps point at an current offline map database stored on the pad? Where do I find that database/FAQ/guide? Having the GPS is pointless, IMO, if it requires me to be wifi'd in.
 
Google Maps doesn't have an offline mode yet. Supposed to get it soon.

It currently has cached routes so you can still use it as a pseudo GPS but it's only for those specific trips.
 
as of now cached routes are your only option for what you want to do...hopefully the update will come soon to be full offline :D
 
You can use your Mobil Hot Spot or Tethering to get your Google Map running.
 
Why not get Navigon Mobile Navigator? It's way better than Google Maps and you download and store country maps on your device so there is never any worth about if you have maps (you have to buy them for your region of the world - I have the USA product, IIRC). It's worth it when you can put it on both your phone your tablet, turning both into effective GPSs. The comparison to a stand alone GPS unit is a bit off, frankly. That's a third device to carry around and why do you need that if you have both a tablet and a phone?
