Inserting Digital Ads Into Rerun TV Shows

The process of adding digital content to old TV shows is kinda neat. The funny part is, I prefer this type of advertising / product placement versus more commercials or ads that play over the top of the show I'm watching. What do you think?
 
I like well done product placement, as long as it isn't intrusive. See: Superman, ET, etc.

I can't stand it when I'm watching a show and then you get a commercial performed by the cast of the show you're watching. I'd almost rather have a commercial. 45 seconds of technobabble that has no purpose other than to tell you about the product.

Good in theory, but the "in your face" product placement just doens't work for me.
 
Christ, I'm tired of corporate America being rammed down my throat as it is. I'm waiting for mandatory brain implants from birth that inserts the desire to buy shit directly into your neurons.
 
Commercials are just getting ridiculous nowadays. Talk radio is just insane with not only half the show being commercials but now theater doing commercials during the show! I've almost completely stopped watching tv other than movie channels because commercial breaks literally every 5 minutes is just maddening!
 
Those type of product placements I do not have a problem with. But those that think these will replace commercials are out of their mind. They will be in addition..

It is pretty insane that an >1/4 of all TV is commercials... Most hour long shows are 42-44 minutes long, 30 min shows are actually 22-23 minutes, aka 33% commercials.
 
I've personally moved away from TV and now internet tv watching... just wait for the dvd to come out and rent 'em (or buy 'em)

it's so much nicer being in control. doesn't really feel bad not being "up-to-date" all the time either, but I can see that being a big deal for some, especially if you have friends who like to talk about the latest show... I have none apparently so WIN FOR ME :)


:( seriously, I think grandma was right: "TV Rots your brian" only it's not the shows, it's the ads. So brainwashy it's scary. Just think about how many hours, days, weeks, worth of ads a person has sat through... that kinda abuse has to have some negative side effects. Like watching news all day, seven days a week... just doesn't seem healthy
 
I'm kind of against this from a historical standpoint. One of the reasons I like watching older shows is the fact that they're period pieces, giving a slice of what trends and styles were like. I don't want to see someone on a sitcom pass an Eminem cassette when it really should be Vanilla Ice ;)
 
I've come to the realization a while ago that the show is just a 45 minute distraction between their 15 minutes of commercials. I don't even bother with TV nowadays, unless I'm playing my PS3 on it.
 
How about Spock watching Transformers on his monitor since the Autobots were watching him, too.
 
I stopped watching network TV a long time ago. I don't even have cable anymore. I use Netflix or similar streaming services to watch what I want.

As for what I think about digital insertion of ads into old shows: I don't like it. If I want to watch an old show, I expect to see that show, not some subtly (or not so subtly) altered version.
 
I would say this is an insult to those who created the art in the first place... but lets be honest, most of the crap out there isn't art. Gene Roddenberry would be spinning in his photon torpedo tube as it flies through the cosmos if he saw the above happen to his show though :D

That said, I miss the days when a 90 minute movie turns into a 2 hours with commercials, as it stands now 90 minutes translates to 2 hours 30 minutes at a minimum, and if we get the "DVD on TV" type shows like on FX, then our 90 minute flick turns into 3 and a half hours easy.

It can go as low as 7 minutes in a 30 minute slot. I could never pay for cable.
 
As long as it's unobtrusive I couldn't give two fucks what they digitally add into reruns. I remember episodes of shows with "product placement" that may have well been written by the ad companies themselves. One episode of a show all the characters couldn't stop talking about the new movie and how great it was (and there were posters for it in seemingly every background). On another show a girl endlessly talked about how great iTunes was with her iPod. That kind of crap makes me want to stop watching TV altogether.

Anyone else nostalgic for the old days when the producers of TV went out of their way to not show you product logos (putting tape or a sticker over it)? I remember seeing an episode of Futurama during it's first season and they put a Nike logo in a shot where Fry takes his first step on the moon. I thought, "Holy shit. I wonder what Nike paid for that bit of product placement?" As it turns out Nike didn't pay a dime and the producers had to fight with the studio to do it because they thought it was a funny gag.
 
It wouldn't be any more annoying than the blur zones they put on every music vid to cover up the profane or branded logos that they didn't feel like paying rights for. In fact, they could put a bunch of products into the episodes, blur them all, and offer to unblur them for a fee. Yeah, that would give me a reason to shoot my TV :D
 
I'd like to see old shows left alone. It gives some perspective of the times. I don't want to watch I love lucy and see her down a red bull.

People will treat it like when B&W films were colorized in the 80s if it ever happens. I'm willing to bet it won't leave the lab, kind of like 10 or 15 years ago I remember reading in a magazine how MIT was working on making 16x9 versions of old shows like I love Lucy. Instead of stretching the picture they were going to go through the films and fill in the missing part of the set with images from other episodes. Never heard anything else about it since
 
If this meant less commercials I am all for it.

It doesn't. They will always try to add as many advertisements as possible. Remember when cable TV first came out it was supposed to have no (or much fewer) commercials? ;)
 
I can see if now. The next time I see Princess Bride on the TV it'll have Fred Savage playing SW TOR instead of the atari baseball game.

I think the reason for this might be DVR. The programs on TV get recorded by the DVR, when you play it back are you seriously going to sit through the boring uninmaginative adverts for things you don't want? No, you fast forward them skipping the pile of annoying offal. So you see no adverts. This way they become unskippable.

Yea I agree with the above. I'd rather see the onscreen character drinking a miller light instead of a can marked "beer". Same with them having a coke or pepsi instead of a cola as long as it isn't in the way. I generally notice when they try to cover logo's and do a bad job. I'd rather just see the dell or apple notebook or whoever made it.

As far as adding it to existing shows I guess it depends on how well it is done.

We had a sponsor pull out of a video shoot at the last second and had to go back and blur out every single beer in the footage.

Pain in the ass.
 
I'm not inherently against the idea, but it can't be allowed to break the immersion. I was watching a cartoon from the 70s that got a re-release, and in the script, they added a "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?" joke. If the networks are going to be inserting things post-broadcast, they can't do it like that.

I would pay $50 more per month if they could completely remove commercials from my tv viewing. Back in the day that was a selling point of cable tv. No commercials.

I don't know, it's hard to find a TV show or movie where they aren't using Macs.

They give them the machines and pay to get them included in many things.

Generally speaking if you see a name brand with its logo visible their is a good chance someone was paid off.
 
No I'm not ok with it. Having ads inside the shows I'm watching is more annoying than commercial breaks. It completely ruin the show with these obnoxious ads in the background of a scene
 
I don't like adding stuff or changing stuff in TV and movies. Just looks at how George Lucas messed up the original trilogy. It feels a bit like rewriting history. You wouldn't add an iPod to Mona Lisa so why would you change TV and movies? They have historical value as well.
