4,096×2,160 in a 36.4" display, yeah now this is progress.

I wonder what kind of framebuffer requirements would you need to game at this resolution for Battlefield 3 once it launches. :p

The only thing I could think of being a nicer "dream display" on a desk would be a 27" or 30" with real 120hz input that is 3d compatible and be a IPS or maybe PLS screen.

Previously the only way to get "4K" resolution was a projector or a large 56" LCD so if companies are starting to make panels with 4K resolution in more sizes price will start to come down to the level were someone outside of a mastering studio could maybe buy one.

Why can't Dell just make a $3000 version of this? that's 2-3x the cost of a regular 30". I bet they would make money. I want 2160p now!!!!!

This display isn't even out yet and it's the first of it's kind, yet you expect dell to make it for $3k and still profit? I hope you're just wishing out loud.

Yea, mostly wishing, not expecting it to really happen :(

Although I do believe there's a large enough demand for it that they could start a 2160p product line AND profit from it. I don't think it would be any different than when they started the 1600p 30" line years ago (those started out at $2000-3000 from what I remember, and people bought them).
 
Well runing games at 3840x2160 isn't that hard, it's just 4 1080p screens. I'm glad to see there 4K lcd's coming out, we just need them to make them feasible for consumers to buy. Like getting them in the rand of $1200 or so.
 
The perfect accessory to go with that $10k desk? How about a $36,000 monitor? I'm not sure why I am even listing the specs, at $36k, who gives a crap what the specs are. Hell, at that price, it better come with a free bar of gold or something. :eek:

It would be awesome if they could scale it down to say 30" as then you'd have a nice high pixel density starting to get comparable to cell phone screens. Still, I'd love one even at 36".

Goddamnit. That kind of price makes the 30" during 2006 blush in embarrassment.

Seriously though. If that screen gets to around $3k, many [H]ers' will forfeit a month's worth of salary and get it...
 
Finally, a company that understands that a tight dot pitch is king. At $36K that should silence all the haters that think huge low rez monitors like HDTVs are great for computers.

they are going to push out the 4k spec, before we can make full use of 1080p.. another decade for america to spend catching up to the "state of the art" even though we havent finished with current technology.

4k is more like the technology you never realize you need. because you dont. i dont plan to watch a 150 inch monitor at 5 feet. nor do i want to purchase a video card capable of pushing 4k resolution that i cant really see.

Actually no... the IBM T221 has existed for a very long time, but now discontinued. Another option was the Viewsonic vp2209b which was really just a rebranded T221 (although, i'm unsure what revision of the T221 it really was). :)

Some of the 4K demos at NAB this year were simply astonishing. Like looking through a window.
 
For that price they'll need to send out their lovely, nekkid Japanese women installers to configure the display for me. :D
 
Is AA no longer necessary at that resolution? And if so, how would that affect how much memory would be needed to push those pixels?
 
Steve you do realize that one gold bar standard size is 27.5 pounds which is almost $680,000. They wouldn't make much money on those monitors if they did that :)
 
That resolution makes me moist.

Shove that resolution on a 30" panel and then we're fucking talking.
 
What kind of ratio is 256:135? (about 17:9) That's almost 2:1, ugh.

Well although that panel was "4K" like it was not widescreen and required multiple dvi inputs were as the specific "4K" resolution I had in mind was 4096x2160 as apposed to 3840x2400.

Previously some "4K" LCD screens were just 4 1920x1080 panels too so if 4096x2160 single piece panels are going to start to hit the open market in non "big screen" sizes higher resolution 22",23",24" and 25" monitors might also happen sooner.

And yes Japan will have 4K broadcasts and 8K ones too before the US even gets 1080p60 ones going.

So although the price on this display is still in the mastering studio price range the fact that it will fit into a workflow directly easier than a 55" or projector used for only screening dailies and that will push the prices down sooner than previously "4K" monitors were likely to.

That resolution is pointless for average consumer and it's too scary to think what kind of problems you would run with older software that doesn't scale fonts properly on it.

I'd take 120 Hz 24" 1920x1200 oled over such 4k nonsense any day.

A single sheet of 8.5X11 paper at 300 DPI is just about the same resolution as a 4k monitor. Most people can handle more than one sheet of paper on a desk.

With current apps, it may be pointless, but I think there is a long way to go before added resolution is pointless
 
127ish ppi....meh...it's awesome and all but i'd really love to see that res cramed into like 30"
 
Is it very wide screen or just have a high resolution? Taht is an insane resolution. But if I wanted mroe size I'd use an HDTV. For a lot less you cna buy 3 30 inches and put them in portrait mode.
