For those of you that haven't seen it yet, Newegg has responded to Best Buy's cease and desist letter. The company is now running a disclaimer on its ad that makes it clear....no animals were harmed in the making of the commercial. :D

Best Buy neither owns nor has exclusive rights to use the word 'Geek', and Best Buy neither owns nor has exclusive rights to use a general, unstylized computer power button icon. It is a comedic, tongue-in-cheek take on a commonly understood customer experience, and does not name, identify or focus on any particular retailer, and we believe the actor portraying the salesperson is not 'slovenly' in any way.

The original story can be found here,

There's a newer ad that seems to be going after Target where the employee is too preoccupied to help someone because he has to mop the floor instead.

but thinks this is over or else it does not look very good for Bestbuy. Newegg is in the right and can be as snarky as they want only adding to the already destroyed Geek Squad reputation.

Well THAT was easy to fix! Hopefully no blue shirt employees were hurt as well. My two takeaways from this entire episode is that Best Buy must have really felt some pain with that commercial and, more importantly, now I know the meaning of "slovenly".. which I now see everywhere!!

"School bans 'slovenly' mothers from wearing pyjamas when they drop their children off"

Here's what I find odd.....

Best Buy watched that commercial and INSTANTLY assumed they were taking a shot at them....now why would that be? Probably because that is exactly the "Best Buy Experience" and they know it? You notice that NO OTHER big box retailer sent a C&D. Now what does that tell you?

(before anyone says anything about the blue shirts, BB doesn't have rights to the blue shirts either, they are worn at many stores, including K-Mart and Wal-Mart...neither of which sent a C&D letter ;))

Perhaps that commercial by itself wouldn't have caused Best Buy to send a C&D letter but when combined with BB's problem with the Newegg's "Geek On" logo, BB felt Newegg was targeting them

K-mart's a red-shirt company I think - at least ours are. Their partner Sears on the other hand is blue. In fact don't they have a trademark for Sears Blue Crew?

"Hey guys, remember when Best Buy used to be cool?" - " Best Buy? You mean Worst Buy?" - "Yeah, me neither."

I thought it was funny Best Buy was crying over Newegg using an industry standardized icon, the power icon.

Every news story is free publicity for Newegg, and makes Best Buy look more stupid.

They also need an advertisement about prices for cables.

Actually, if anyone is in the wrong for their logo, it is Best Buy. The only thing that may be similar is the O in the word ON and Best Buy's tie logo and the word geek, and New Eggs logo is the symbol used in many on buttons on computers from laptops to desktops, and also is used for the on/off icon in windows, and has been used for such long before Geek Squad was even a reality. So, if Best Buy persists, they may be in a losing fight with more then just Newegg.

This. Everyone has heard of bestbuy, and lots of people don't like them. Getting this letter was great for newegg, because of the publicity it generated. The best thing bb could have done would be to ignore newegg. Instead, they've made asses of themselves, gotten nothing from newegg, and put neweggs name all over the news (and acknowledged them as a serious competitor)

Legally they don't stand any ground of course,

But be real, both you and I know, and everyone else knows that this is Best Buy portrayed here, don't even pretend otherwise. Not that I see anything wrong here, even if they screamed THIS IS BEST BUY in the ad..

Now Walmart's going to send out a C&D letter? LOL. I'm sure Walmart doesn't give a damn about that one unlike Best Buy.

True, but my local wal mart looks a bit like that if shot from the right angle. Not quite as fancy and spacious, though. It could be the computer department of any big box store methinks.

Best Buy is just getting their panties in a bunch, and don't believe they have any legal grounds here. But I don't know, I'm no lawyer =p

It's pretty obvious that most of us here agree Newegg is the way to go. The problem is most of the "reviews" on Newegg are done by morons.

What games solitaire and Farmville?

Eh ignore them. It's pretty easy to filter out what's bad and what isn't. Especially good research in the hardwares that you're going to get. For example, I studied the crap out of my laptop for almost a month before finally getting it.

There's no max setting in solitaire and Farmville?

I'd rather hear from users who are more liable to break things than pros that might have their pockets lined by manufacturers.

I know that they are morons. If you have any computer experience then it's pretty glaringly obvious which reviews are good and which ones are bad. Joe Buyer reading them probably doesn't. So in a sense he/she might be getting worse advice than the average idiot Best Buy salesperson.

Their reviews are good. Don't take them to be reliability indicators (people are more likely to review if they didn't like them) or to be performance indicators (people want to justify their purchase). You can get all of the performance info that is reliable from a real review site. What newegg reviews are good for is finding minor issues and annoyances with a product that a reviewer wouldn't look at it long enough to discover. For instance, I had a monitor that would not go to standby mode when using hdmi. No real review brought it up, but it was mentioned in several newegg reviews. I bought a case that had multicolor fans, and real reviews talked about the color options and fan performance, but only the newegg reviews noted that the fans always default back to blue every time the computer either turns off or goes to sleep. They're great for finding out little ancillary bits of info like that, which is often overlooked on professional reviews that are focused on performance.

Despite the blue shirt, the store looks more like a Fry's or something than BB.

LOL... good point.

It is true a lot of reviews are done by neophytes but if you weed through them you can find some that are actually worthwhile. However, we are all Hard readers and as such probably don't need to read the reviews anyway. ;)

Good day sir!

I have never had that happen in a Target .... Walmart yes but never Target when in there stores i've always gotten a friendly "can i help you find something" But i have been hard pressed to find any help when needed in a walmart.

A simple and cheaper solution would be for BestBuy to change all their employee's shirts to Ret.

Tigerdirect employees wore blue shirts also now its comp usa / circuit city ex employees and there useless.

Like they said, they're just making a generalized statement of how stores are much of the time. The employees? They're all useless most of the time, especially compared to 70% of the members of this website. As for myself, when/if I have to go to those stores because I need it now, I generally hang around for a bit and play real life technology jeopardy with the employees. It's fun, I ask them serious technical questions, they fail miserably (most of the time). Then I laugh in my head a little bit, why? Because they're dumberererer than me. Shit, at least I know one thing better than the next guy these days. Ah, the little joys in life. Ha.

NewEgg is my HERO!!

But they should really have that guy in the "blue shirt" trying to "force" the customer to sign up for their credit card. :p

Yeah the "there" was bothering me as well....glad you said something, you have afforded me more laziness for the day...

Newegg is leaps and bounds better then Best Buy and it will always be like that.

Yeah, bad grammar makes me cringe when I notice it. Shit, I'm not even perfect, but if I do fuck up I enjoy people correcting me. It only helps me in the long run. Who knows, that one correction someone did to my grammar at some point, well, it could get me a promotion tomorrow for an extra $15k+ a year at some point.

As someone who worked at an electronics store in high school and realizes how little actual training those employees receive, I can feel justified in calling you a complete asshole who has nothing better to do than try to make some stressed-out miserable kid's day even worse. Someone at corporate crunched the numbers and figured out what the most profitable amount of training was, and that is all they provided. They figured out that a day or two of online slideshow training was enough to answer a majority of customer questions, and that potential sales profits lost by having employees who are undertrained is less than the amount of money it would cost to give a proper training to all of the employees. I was shocked when I completed the training and realized that as a 16 year old who enjoyed computer games and home audio equipment, I had not learned anything in the training that I didn't already know. And many times, douchebags like you with nothing better to do would come in with no intentions of buying a product just to get some easy bullying of under-trained teenagers who could not do anything to stop you without losing their jobs. I bet that made you feel big.

While newegg offers great prices for people OUTSIDE of California (10.75% tax), TigerDirect and Amazon are still competitive enough to at least paroose before deciding on a purchase from there.

Personally, I don't buy from NewEgg since they lied about selling OEM Intel SSD's as "Retail" ones and then deleted everyone's reviews about the product being such. As such, I trust them about as much as Fry's Electronics / Outpost.

Funny commercials though.
