Next 'Call of Duty' To Charge Monthly Fee

Why does everyone have such a hate on for CoD? I don't get it. The multi player is fun, there are tons of servers, and there are a lot of mods (well, for COD4 anyways).

Does the dust when you shoot a round into the dirt look perfect, nope, but that also means that it will play on more computers...

That being said, I'm not sure I'd pay $8/month for an FPS. But, I'd happily pay a little bit every few months for map packs and expansions....

Change is the last thing the franchise needs, it's going up against BF3.

Bad time to make the transition Kotick, you sexual offending pervert.

lets be honest. BF3 is going up against COD, not vice versa.

Ill buy both, because they are completely different types of online play experiences. Apples to oranges imo.
sometimes i feel like runnin n gunnin, sometimes i dont.

Didn't Kotick just recently say something about Call of Duty not going to a subscription model? Am I crazy?

CoD 4 was 4 installments ago as of MW3. And 4 years ago. And before the franchise turned completely to shit. Keep on dreaming about the past, my friend.

There are enough schmucks on the world that will pay for this and make it work. And MW3 will be a smash hit even though it will be the worst game of the series by far (and you didn't think it could get worse, did you?) and it will be made so by those same schmucks.

Bobby Kotick may be a greedy prick but he is good enough at what he does to wring every last dollar from the pockets of the general gaming public.

most folks dont hate COD per say, they hate the business model and company(ies) it comes from. I see nothing wrong with making money for a well polished product, but this is going to extreme. I personally dont like it. I've had my preorder in for BF3 for over a month and am excited to play it.

Everything went downhill from COD4. Unfortunately the financial records show different. Thats your console kiddie money. Its catered to that crowd now and the days of dedicated pc gamers and gaming are long gone. Atleast thats what Activision wants their clientele to be. No more free modding, no dedicated servers that give people who rent them FULL CONTROL over them. And to whoever said above that its just a upgrade smoothed over with some extra flash; I believe you are correct. Nothing innovative really anymore. Customization of loadout should be included as a standard feature, not classified as "ooh shiny, must have the shiny." Argh, im rambling now. In short: BF3 good, COD pew.

BF3 sales are going to go UP because of this. Activision appears to be pushing the cash cow of COD a bit too far with this one.

Title is really misleading... I hate CoD as much as the next person but they've been very clear that they won't be charging a monthly fee for the online multiplayer, you'll still be getting what you've gotten before, this is just for extra services like the article says, maps and extra statistics... doubt it will be worth it though.
I highly doubt non-subscribers will get what they've always gotten. Catering to the subscribers inherently means less resources to focus on just making the base game as good as it could be.

Too bad.

The older CODs were fun and the concept was pretty good.
Now it's just a console thang.

8 bucks a month to buy a badge or a better weapon, maybe a map.

In less than a year there will be no players, no servers and a bunch of people that paid twice the original price..... and retail will probably go up to $65.

Activision said they only made the last WoW expansion 5 levels cause they were gonna release more content at sooner intervals.

6 months later they have yet to release any new raid content. And what I have seen coming down the pipeline is rehashes of old stuff.

I cancled.

I thogught the same thing about xbox live...I mean you pay monthly to play online with your console and your internet connection on servers provided by the players, which can be gotten elsewhere (PC, other consoles) for free...yet that somehow took off...

So I suppose this being an xbox game will sucker those same suckers into paying twice a month...for what others offer...for free... Theres a ready market.

Yes and yes

But you know even when that happens, it will be the fault of those filthy pirates! :D

I might buy the game, but I certainly don't give a shit about stats and extra crap that is, well...crap.

My biggest concern through this is that other games will follow suit with this model. This is the first FPS (that I know of) to charge a monthly service for extra content. Eventually this will bleed to a monthly charge for the game like WOW but with a lot less benefit. Dedicated servers I see as the first inclusion. "Want to play MP? Pay up to join our servers". I wonder what he agreements are for the monthly service. Can you join a month, download what you want, then cease? I highly doubt it, probably contract based.

I started and stopped with COD:MW2. The endless lack of stable hosts killed it for me, not to mention the crates/plane calls. I am waiting for BF3 like many others here.

well, the monthly fee idea can kiss my arse.

Slowly, they are trying to follow the success in Asian market with those games or whatever.

Even though he recently said that CoD wouldn't be going to a monthly service. He did say long before that if he could have one thing it would be CoD as a monthly fee service. So not too surprised.

Anyway I think this is more to partially pave the way for blizzards next mmo which is rumored to be a mmo-fps, and get people used to the idea of paying a monthly fee for an fps.

If you play Call of Duty, what does Elite need to offer to get you to enlist?

A blowjob would be a nice starter. One for every month I pay. :D

They and by they I mean Kotick clearly do not understand the FPS market. This is going to bomb and bomb hard.

Yeah, see how poorly MW2 did after they announced no dedicated servers and everyone protested and such.

Oh wait, it didn't do poorly...

Oh dear, WoW. I haven't played since TBC / early WotLK. I see that Cataclysm's first new raid content 6 months in will pit you against Ragnaros again. Really? For shame.

These companies must think we all shit Gold bricks, have unlimited discretionary money, or their egos are so large people only buy their games.

I'll be shocked if the next CoD is so well made(on PC) it warrants a subscription. I highly doubt it though.

Damn I miss the old CoDs'. :(

because the customer service infrastructure for the service requires an "enormous investment."

ROFL

That title is very misleading. Makes it sound like you have to pay a subscription to play the game, which is untrue to the core.

What it is is Call of Duty Elite service. It's basically like PSN+ on the PS3. PSN is free and you can play games for free, however if you choose to do so you can subscribe and get extra features.

well im actually glad. gives me a reason not to buy it. Having the best selling game isnt good enough so the greedy bastards have to squeeze even more out of you.
im a laid back guy and the only time i get angry is playing Black ops. Blood pressure goes thru the roof swearing campers, rpg fagsand getting knifed by someone while shooting them. Damn near popped my top when in one match i came into had guys on the other team lying on the ground camping all the spawn points. I watched the kill cam and the guy killed 3 guys in 3 seconds. Spawn and dead before you can even move like back in the days i play unreal on pc.

Can't wait for BF3. MW2 was such crap with connection and all that on pc. Haven't bought one since. I havn't played WoW for a while but they used to come out with pretty large free content updates. I think I'll wait for their next MMO though now.

Hope CoD with $8 a month thing tanks hard.

Dice is probably celebrating. : )

It's far from what some of you are thinking (hoping?) it is. Research first.

This article is short but informative. It's not just some stat tracking feature, it's an optional service with features that will very well be worth it to many players. There are definitely some nifty features there in my opinion, but not something that I, personally, will be willing to pay for. It's just not my thang, as I don't really play CoD for the multiplayer experience anyways.

^^^ Sadly this is very true. The console kiddies will just buy it up no matter what. My friends son is an absolute moron at the age of 18! He lives and dies on the XBox 360 and buys anything the game tells it too. Activision knows this...

Looks like a bunch of stuff that's free on PC. Shocking.

I don't understand why you guys are getting your panties in a bunch....if you don't like it then don't buy it. From the sounds of it the game will function exactly as it used to if you opt out. Internet rage FTW

MW3 looks like MW2...

BF3 looks like win.

Get fucked Activision.
