Stupid question - What is the current nVidia equivalent to the 9800GT?

I've got an eVGA 9800GT Superclocked Edition. It's still going strong, but... Well, the upgrade bug is starting to bite.

I obviously want an improvement over what I have, but I'd like to know where my starting point is, to see how far I have to stretch my budget to get the improvement that I want.

the closest thing I can think of is a GTS 250, but you're better off getting a GTS 450, which will give you better performance for a little more money. EDIT: Also the newest equivalent I can think of is the AMD 6670. The performance is pretty close to the 9800GT and GTS 250.

EDIT:Sorry I did not notice that you were just asking what the equivalent to a 9800gt is. But if you do want a nice upgrade these questions will get some god opinions.

Well, we need a few answers here. What kind of improvements are you looking for, what res do you game at, what are your favorite titles (even the upcoming ones that you are excited about). What is your starting budget, and what is the maximum you would spend on an upgrade.

With those answered you will get a TON of options.

I guess maybe I should clarify...

I mean... Is there even a performance equivalent to the 9800 GT in the 500 series, or have things progressed so far that even the GT 520 beats it out?

I game at 1680x1050, native resolution. Honestly, I'm not crazy with my games. I play a lot of Team Fortress 2 and I've got my preorder in for Duke.

As far as budget... Not even sure. I'm more worried about the performance for dollar ratio than setting an actual dollar limit on my spending. I'm obviously not going to be spending the money on a 580, but I'd like to see where things lie as far as how much increase in performance I get per dollar.

2 460s is a great deal, and the best bang for your buck is prolly a 560 TI.....

I agree a 560ti would be a great choice, very well rounded card. If you wanted to try an AMD card I just can't keep from recommending a 6950 with unlocked shaders, but that is my bias opinion, I have had much luck with it.

I was looking at this the other day, i have an 8800 gts 512 (g92) and was wondering what was equivalent. Heres a list that can give you an idea of what is more powerful, equivalent etc.

This is also just in terms of raw power from what i understand so this is just to give you a rough estimate doesn't necessarily guarantee that card 40 will perform better than card 41 in game x. Drivers, architecture, directx 9,10,11 capability all factor in. The 560Ti is a great card, plugged one into my friends machine, hes chugging away easily playing tf2, crysis 2, and many others.

No. The 9800GT is significantly faster than the GT440 ($80) but moderately slower than the GTS 450 ($130). Nvidia still hasn't created a replacement for that price range ($100). Last time I checked (which was a month or two ago) you can still get one on newegg for $100 and that happens to be right where they belong right now in terms of performance compared to current gen. cards. ATI on the other hand does have an equivalent, the 6670 ($100) which is roughly equal to a 9800GT in d3d9 performance and slightly faster in d3d10 performance.

Anything from a GTS 450 up on the nvidia side or from a 6750 up on the ati side will be an upgrade from what you have now in terms of performance (though those particular cards won't offer much of an upgrade).

What nvidia needs is to rename the GT 430, GT 440, and GTS 450 the GT 530, GT 540, and GTS 550. Then they need to come out with a GTS 540 at $100 to compete with the 6670. And they also need to come out with a G 510 to replace the G 210 with a d3d11low profile passive cooled HTPC card at $40 and compete with the 5450. And finally a GTX 560 SE to at $170 to compete with the 6850. Only then will they have a complete lineup that actually makes sense and competes with ATI well in every price range (though still not as complete).

See, that would actually make sense:
G 510: $40
GT 520: $60
GT 530: $70
GT 540: $80
GTS 540: $100
GTS 550: $130
GTX 550: $150
GTX 560 SE: $170
GTX 560: $200
GTX 560 TI: $250
GTX 570: $350
GTX 580: $500
GTX 590: $700

What we have right now is:
8400 GS: $30
G210: $40
GT 520: $60
GT 430: $70
GT 440: $80
9800 GT: $100
GTS 450: $130
GTX 550/GTX 460: $150
GTX 560: $200
GTX 560 TI: $250
GTX 570: $350
GTX 580: $500
GTX 590: $700
