Dell U3011 coming soon.

May be a tad off topic but does anyone know who purchased a Dell U3011 other than dell.com (newegg, amazon, etc.) if you're still covered under the Premium Panel Guarantee? It seems like the price has been $1,500 at dell.com for a while now and I’d like to buy it at like Newegg or something for $1,300. When I called Dell in the past for a monitor (bought from dell.com) under the same guarantee needing to be swapped out for a bright pixel, I just gave them my order # and things were easy-peasy. I'm not exactly sure if it'll be the same as purchasing somewhere else though. Anyone with experiences with this that got a monitor swap when not purchased through dell.com? Thanks.

i got my refurb u3011 and it has one single stuck pixel. it's green on a black background. i haven't been able to find any others. would dell replace it for 1 pixel?

I'm in the same boat. Got a Rev. A02 with only 4 months used of the 3 year warranty. Panel seems flawless except for a single dead pixel (black). Should I try for a replacement or live with it? Paid $809 +tax at Dell outlet.

On another note, any suggestions for tweaking the settings? I know nothing about monitor calibration and all the tools I've seen talked about in this thread are very pricey (~$500!!). I'm mostly worried about brightness. After using it last night for the first time my eyes feel... tired today. Hard to explain.

Also, all this talk about the coating being very distracting is true! I was bothered by it before I even read into it...

not sure about the # of bad pixels required for replacement

but the panel is calibrated at the factory. Use sRGB and turn brightness down, that's what I'm doing until I can get a good calibration tool rented/borrowed

Just got a U3011 Rev A01. Very nice, except for an slightly obvious pink tint on the right side of the monitor. On the left side I can't see any green tint, but it has lower luminosity.

So... does this happen to all the U3011s? I understand that some people say they don't have the problem, but maybe it's there and they aren't noticing it.

What are the odds of receiving a good unit? It's safer to go to a smaller monitor? Maybe the U2711?

Fairly difficult to say how common the variances are, because the sensitivity of each owner is different. I'd say RMA it and get a replacement. My U2711 has a slightly tinted portion while my U3011 doesn't. I'll probably RMA the U2711 eventually...

I for one am a happy camper... AG coating is the only downside but it doesn't drive me crazy... Otherwise it's the best **** monitor I ever owned

Sure, it's not perfect, but I would still be happy with a monitor like that. I don't know if the typical U3011 is better than that or not, sorry.

Edit: I'm basing that on what I see in your photos on my monitor, obviously. But I don't see any color tints at all, just that the edges are a little darker. Reminds me of the Vignetting photography effect.

would you guys buy a second hand3007wfp-hc with about 1-2 years warranty left for 700 or wait for a coupon for u3011 w/ 3 year warranty @ 1200?

Is the warranty service different for the older models? Do you just need a service tag or do you need order number too?

You don't really have to wait for the coupon. Just call Dell and negotiate the price down to ~$1050 for a new unit.

that would definitely be more enticing. have people been successful with that? I remember last time a coupon came out it dropped the price to 1125. I will try to negotiate with them

How does one go about doing this? I don't see why they would lower their price without some leverage :)

It's either 4 or 5 before it's considered bad. 1 won't cut it. I got mine as a refurb and luckily no stuck pixels

Yep, that's how I got mine. Just call and ask for 30% off "like during the sale in Dec '10", you'll probably get 25% + $75 off = $1050.

When using sRGB, what ICC profile should one use? Default from dell?

(Other profiles downloaded from TFTcentral, but they look really screwed up.)

I've had my u3011 for about 7 months now. Have been very impressed with it. Recently I got an iPad 2, and the intense brightness of the iPad 2 (at 100%) made me realize how dim my u3011 was. Yet, I seem to recall when I got my u3011 the brightness was so extreme at 100% I had to turn it down to 50%. Some months later I must have thought 50% was too dim, and went up to 100%. Right now my u3011 is at 100% brightness, and I don't think it's very bright at all. I've either become accustom to the brightness, or the monitor has dimmed over time. The iPad 2 bright whites make my u3011 look like a $100 monitor. Not sure what to think, should I RMA the u3011?

If your monitor is like mine, you are damaging your eyes at 100% brightness. I use 0% with sRGB and it is harsh.

Mine is couple months old and at 0 brightness in sRGB mode it's still at 145 cd/m2. I turn it down to 120 with the icc profile and thus lose some color space.

hi guys. sorry this is regarding the 3007wfp-hc and its warranty. I am thinking of buying this monitor used. when something goes wrong with the monitor, do I require the order number or is simply the service tag number sufficient?

Should I go through some kind of warranty transfer with the owner?

My point was that at 100% it just doesn't seem as bright as when I first got it. When I first got it anything above 50% was too bright, but now anything less than 100% seems too dim. I was curious if any other long time owners have noticed loss of brightness. I guess I should have measured the luminance when I first bought it.

I also don't think LCD monitors can damage your eyes unless you're using a monitor at 100% brightness in a pitch black room and your face against the screen. :p Eye strain is a result of many variables; DPI, posture, viewing distance, room lighting, frequency of breaks, fatigue, etc.

All CCFL monitors lose brightness over time. If you run it at 100% it will lose it even faster. Mine down to about 50% of it's original brightness.

how many times your monitor needed to loose 50% of the original brightness?
at what brightness you used the monitor during its life?

I presume this is your 2490? I know we had a couple of detailed threads when I first got mine... I'm curious what your hour count is and your target luminosity which led to that 50% reduction in that number of hours.

I think my target is 120 or 140 (not at the NEC right now so I can't check) and it still seems like the luminance control system still has lots and lots of headroom.

There is still plenty of headroom left for me, but I like a dim monitor.

When it was new it had a calibrated brightness range of 140 minimum to 400 maximum cd/m2.

Measured Today with 12000 hours accumulated, it is almost exactly half of that. With a range of 71 minimum to 203 maximum. That is with 95% of the time spent at minimum. Occasionally cranked up on sunny days with curtains open.

Initially I felt it was too bright, but today I am glad it was too bright initially as I will probably get more life before it gets too dim even for me.

Hmm, only 12k hours to reduce brightness by 50% when you're fairly conservative. That's a little disappointing, I suppose. I know it is/was a big thing with plasmas to rate how many thousand hours before a 50% reduction in brightness. I know my Panasonic G25 is "rated" at 100k hours before half brightness. I understand that will be fudged and ideal, but it's an order of magnitude greater than we're seeing from the 2490.

I wonder if there will be any practical/affordable CCFL replacement when the time comes in order to keep this great display functioning (assuming nothing else breaks on it, of course).

I'll dig into Spectraview and get my aging numbers when I get home.

Ok I just placed my order in last night using the 25% code and this morning it said it was shipped. Couple hours later I got the tracking # and it said it was delivered 4/28/2010. WTF?

Better contact dell and see whats up. I ordered Monday morning(5/16), and it is supposed to be here tomorrow (5/18). I'm excited to say the least!

It is a little disappointing, but I tend to be abusive in other ways. I turn it on in the morning and seldom shut it off. I watch TV and leave it on. I take a nap and leave it on. I disabled sleep mode because my TV also attached doesn't like it... I probably was in front of the monitor for only half of those hours. I treat it like it is indestructible.

I expected about 20000 hour to half, so it never seemed to be important, but I will probably try to shut it off more when I am not using it.

any negatives with using a dual link dvi cable on a regular dvi monitor? planning on using the displayport and using the dual link on my 2007fp

I just checked last night and my target is 120 and my hour counter is 11,500. I did not fool around to see what my min/max was though. I seem to remember seeing in the basic OSD it indicating that it was holding the backlight at 30% or so to achieve 120 cd/m^2. I don't think the advanced OSD (which is usually how I have it set) shows things in quite that way.

They ended up using a very old tracking number, which is why it lead to all the confusion.

You're lucky, mine should be in on 5/23. I can't stand the wait!

I ordered one last week and they may have assigned your code to a serial number for a monitor, and that was the ship date from the factory... which had already left for a staging area...

or you found a wormhole and should call steve hawking and let him know he was right all along.

I just plugged mine in and let me tell you, itll be worth the wait!

Does anyone know where the drivers are? I was under the impression that there is a driver set for the monitor, my disc had none and all I get from dell's website is the stupid download manager.

I had the same first impression when I got mine. I discovered the default brightness setting from the factory is 50%. I bumped it up to 70% and it looks much better.

After reading this thread I've also gotten into the habit of turning it off any time I'm going to be away from the computer for a length of time.

Puts my old Gateway XHD3000's 72% color gamut to shame... I like it. :)

I received my new U3011 last Friday. Rev A02 from Mexico. The backlight uniformity on mine is quite good, very even especially when compared to some of the pictures earlier in the thread. I don't have a measurement/calibration device (using AdobeRGB mode) but I turned the brightness to zero and it's still brighter then the BenQ FP241VW (at brightness 70) sitting next to it.

Unfortunately it has a stuck red pixel about 10cm up from dead centre of the monitor so back she goes for exchange.... A bit frustrating since it appears to be a really good sample in every other aspect.

Hey guys I just recieved my monitor today. I'm sorta a newbie to monitors. It has one stuck pixel on all light colors and on black background there is like 5 green and 1 red stuck pixel. Am I seeing this right? The pixel is about the size of a dust particle. Is that the right size of a pixel? Also some of the green ones, I have to look left and right to see them clearly. Are those dead pixels also? What is dell's warranty on this monitor? How long do they ship me the new monitor? Thanks.
