Rumor has it that Sony will be attacked again this weekend. That means we can expect another denial / denial / admission / $2 game offer / blame Anon cycle to start on Monday morning.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

eh, that isn't so much an attack on sony, more like their customers. (based on quote)

Joy I really really hate these douchbags now, and Anon only "claims" they aren't doing any of the attacks as they don't want their asses tossed in jail

great, anon is attacking sony. right..

Anonymous: We are going to attack Sony's servers and further revealing all the personal info of their customers, do you now hear our voices sony?!?! aren't we that great?!?!

seriously, what are these guys, 12? honestly, sony has been beaten to dust, their reputation ruined, what more do they want? its like blackmail/extortion now :(

honestly they are just bringing more attention to themselves. things like this might just ignite some short fuses from our already misinformed government , what if their actions just further destroys the already fragile state of net neutrality and anonymity on the net :(

Yep getting sick of hearing about this. Maybe the low lifes could hurt Sony and not the end user... About to unplug my ps3 and smash it!!!!!!!

Honestly, I don't care if Sony gets attacked again, but this is just a dick move, considering what it's gonna do (if it's true anyway)

Pretty burnt out on this issue. What most interesting about all this is how much the internet has changed culture of "Hacking" and it's consequences.

Anon was to blame, Sony was to blame, and the judicial system was to blame.

In summary Geohotz did what someone would have done eventually. Released source code(in a manner of speaking). This happens all the time. The difference Geohotz tried to make it legal. I don't think he's a fame hound. I think he was after precedent. The court did what they would do in the past: Treat it as a private civil matter involving a corporation and an accused thief. Money talked as per norm since as far back as Americas beginnings. During the civil rights era you'd have people storming the courtrooms, blocking access to the factories, but this is future and what we've just witnessed is our first Internet based protest march and unfortunately that march has turned into what most protests do. A riot. People are getting hurt. Everyone and no one is to blame.

Really does walmart take every person that "has" gotten away with a stolen Blue-player to court? No, they don't that kind of protection. The same as you or I don't get any special treatment when someone breaks in our cars. Even if you report them there's not a whole lot you can do. You might get your shit back if you're lucky.

Sony can't force us to take us or our government to do their job for them. They're realizing now the only thing they can do, the same as any individual, is buy better locks.

Didn't the unofficial Anon spokesperson come out and say "We don't steal from end users?"
If so I should hope he was thoroughly questioned, warented, and searched, then presuming he was innocent we should go back to treeting Anon like the juvinile flunkies they are.

There is no way they have the skills to pull something like this off.
Whoever did has some skills, and didn't do it to retaliate against Sony. Instead they targetted the customers. This sounds more like the reason George Hotz left the country for a while...

Unfortunately... the only (realistic) way to hurt Sony is through it's customer base. Hit them where it hurts, hit them in their wallet. Unfortunately their customers are the only real sane way into their wallet.

So we all sue Sony when this happens, once they guys are caught (if ever) can I sue them.. as they have no money, maybe sue them to cut my grass with a hand mower for 20 years? Doing crap like this is on a scale of sad that is so low It cant be described.. hacking to prove you can and expose a flaw (earasing the CC or something) but releaseing (so they can harm the owners) them to "teach sony a lesson" is a bit like shooting your best friend in the chest to teach him gun safety.

I put this bunch on the same level as the ones who spam my damn inbox, if i could put them in a 10 foot round room and tell um to piss in a corner to get out I would.

Good to see most see this for what it is.. dipshits wanting attention and being asshats to get it.

Or maybe they're so decentralized that they have no way of knowing if there's a group that says they're acting on anonymous's behalf without the unofficial spokesperson knowing? I'd say that's very possible.

Or it's a ploy by the hackers to keep the heat off of them.

Who knows though, all we can do is speculate.

Since this is so out there, as far as publicity is concerned, I wonder why Sony hasn't just disconnected all their servers from the Internet at the Firewall?? Until this gets resolved, ALL their systems should be down. Most of their services aren't even usable right now, what is a couple more systems down gonna do for their public image (other than possibly HELP it in showing responsibility and value for their customer data)?

I think in their case, the real goal would be making sure your friend never trusts you again... and if he's dumb enough to do so.. he'll damn well never trust you around a gun again.

If they wanted just money... they'd keep quite and sell the numbers on the black market (which seems to be the case until now).

Its been known for over a year that customer data was in plain text. I blame Sony. Hack the shit out of them. We can all get new cards.

Anonymous has said it wasn't them and that they don't steal credit cards. It doesn't seem to fit their modus operandi, as a collective.
I'd imagine it's more likely some hard core hackers that are sympathetic of Anon and/or wants to blame it on Anon. Whatever it is, Sony Arrogance™ fucked with the wrong guys this time.

I kind of find this whole thing pretty hilarious, even though my info got stolen. Sony takes away functionality after functionality and then trys to sue the living shit out of some guy who cracks their crappy code. Then a barely organized group ass rapes all the sony servers a multiple billion dollar corporation gets brought down by some dudes in the basement. I mean really if this large of company with that kind of money and resources can get taken down by some guys, then i'm sorry but blame falls on sony for this one.

With this large of corporation and amount of data some random a tiny group shouldn't be able to even make a dent in their security much less pwn the whole thing. Sony made the decision to spend all the money and time going after their customers rather then spend the money on having a non duct tape and cardboard security system. Also its not like they didn't have warning signs, i mean people were unbanning their own accounts, anon's 1st attack brought it to its knees with just DDoS attacks, i mean everyone saw the signs that sony's network was weak and some splinter group went in for the kill.

Anon doesn't know who "their people" are and they don't know if anyone associated with them did this or not. They merely said that "AnonnOps" did not order this to happen, while making no claim of who AnnonOps is. They are decentralized and don't even have an official spokesperson. It seems perfectly plausible that people associated with Anon decided to make some cash off this whole thing. This is the problem with Anon trying to be the secret internet boogey man.

Not owning a PS3 or an Xbox, or any console right now, I can't help but to find this whole thing kind of hilarious. I'm sure I'd be upset if I still had my PS3, but I don't, and this whole thing is great for popcorn viewing.

I find it pretty fucking funny also. Lol, especially some of the comments in this thread. It's 100% Sony's fault. Anon is just showing Sony, and Sony consumers that their shit's weak and they need to think about that. Sony needs to stop ass raping it's customers for stupid shit, and Sony users need to stop pouring money into a dumb fuck company that isn't going to do a damned thing to protect you. All Sony does is try to further drain your pockets, that's where all of their resources go, not to protecting it's loyal customers. I think there will be a lot less loyal customers after this. Now your pockets may be getting drained by Joe Blow highest bidder, sucks to be you. Hopefully your banks are more responsible than Sony in getting you your money back, and keeping it safe for you. It would probably be a good idea to give your bank/credit card a little heads up if you are a Sony customer or something. ;)

As long as they leave my XBoxLIVE alone. I'm fine with them. Down with PS3! \o/

I really don't know how they didn't notice that someone was downloading their entire database till they had the whole thing, i mean 77million customer's data isn't small, don't they have like i dunno someone monitoring that kind of shit? Or was it like "hey guys theres a huge download going on right now, should i stop it? nah it will go away eventually."

If the people threatening this third attack is indeed Anonymous, I would imagine that it would be to show people that Sony hasn't tightened up its security yet.

Simialr thing happened with the Metallica vs Napster affair, where Ulrich turned up to court with the names and addresses of users who had downloaded songs through Napster illegally, but used the information to make a point against Napster's claims that its users were not trackable, rather than a launchpad for hundreds of lawsuits against individuals.

I hate consoles so... bring it on. Convert people to PC gaming!

how many retards does it take to blame Anon without reading the article?

"Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said."

answer:
at least 5 in this thread.

I'm a PC gamer to the fullest extent, so I primarily use my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and media center. The whole thing that sucks about this is that I've been unable to use Netflix for the past 2-3 weeks. I hope they catch these bastards and make an example out of them...

If Anon is responsible for these attacks, what right do they have to think that they "speak" for the community??? Yes Sony is suffering, but the userbase is the mostly heavily impacted...

In other news, Sony is offering everyone affected by the data breach a free year of identity/credit protection through http://www.debix.com/products_how_it_works.php.

Though oddly you don't hear that mentioned often, because its more fun to keep poking Sony with sticks.
First paragraph of http://www.debix.com/products_how_it_works.php

"Today, despite everyone's best efforts, identity thieves strike over 9.9 million times a year and commit over $48 billion in fraud * . You can become a victim of identity theft when thieves are able to use your personal information to acquire credit cards, home equity loans, or take over existing credit accounts in your name. "
My goodness sakes, listening to you people rambling on about who might have done this and blaming Anon. Give your heads a shake. Anon must be a busy little group, hell at this rate they could buy sony out with some cash left over. Maybe Anon could help the US Government (taxpayers) out buy buying Bonds.

So if I break into your house and steal your shit it's your fault for not having a stronger, door, window or lock?

Anon is a group of worthless thugs who should be tracked down and locked up like the criminal vermin they are.
