So, are most L4D2 players mean?

pretty much defeats the purpose of playing with friends if you're going to be alone on a team with random idiots anyways.

Dude he just called you stupid!...

...Oh hell no! Wait...

I have about 430+ hours in l4d2, I have met some great friends on there and we just play together and use our mics to chat about all sorts of things. It has given me lots of laughs and enjoyment.

I would like to see stats that show how often someone quits early while on the winning and losing team, would be interesting. Additionally, track how often someone initiates or votes for a kick vote.

The last time and only time i tried vs. I told everyone I was new at it and they said fine and gave me a little advice. We were survivors first and ended up being taken out, I was vote kicked within 5sec of the last survivor dying.

I can't stand VS games, noone has "fun" like they do with normal co-op games.

I need to make a confession, I have yet to beat LfD2, I did manage to beat the first campaign.

I can't stand VS games, noone has "fun" like they do with normal co-op games.

I think its related to how small the teams are. In big 32vs32 games people who want to play as a team can play as a team, then people who want to solo it and run around like rambo can still do that, so everyone has fun. In a game which is 4v4 there's no room for anyone who isn't serious and everyone gets tainted by the elitist arseholes who can't possibly be on a team who only wants to have "fun". That's why I end up sticking to games like BFBC2 and MW1 where I can log on and chill out for a while, instead of games like L4D where I have to sit there and listen to whining bitches.

Taht's true, you really see that in games like Dota, LoL and HoN, not a alot of joking around.

that's why I just stick to campaign co-op with people who don't really game hardcore. I set the difficulty to normal, and just start getting shitfaced and have fun screwing around. No pressure at all.

Its honestly why I jumped from L4D to HoN. I like playing a competitive small man game but could not handle all the raging in L4D. For me the first couple months after release were amazing. I recall little issues with people leaving, then it went downhill and started to become a chore to play pub games.

Most players are not "mean" but I would give this advice to someone starting to play versus:

- If you don't have a mic, don't play realism. If you get smoked/pounced/charged on normal versus, your teammates know where you are. On realism depending on timing, nobody will know. You need to use the mic to tell your teammates what happened and where. If you joined a game and didn't have your mic ready, it is your fault. All it takes is one person afk for 20 seconds setting up a mic to ruin a score.

- If you aren't good at normal mode, don't play realism. Realism gamers are more competitive and don't want people runnning around that don't know the map or strategy.

- Play with a group of friends instead of random. Play a few games and add teammates that you like. In pub games, you will often find that you are with a group of friends that had one or two pub spots. Add these people and play with them on a regular basis.

- If you are new or suck, tell your teammates that at the beginning. They will watch you more closely and give you pointers.

- Some people are just pricks. Many people tend to blame their teammates, hackers, the programmers, etc. no matter what. These people will insult, complain, point fingers, vote kick, etc. Don't feel bad about leaving mid-game if one of these people are on your team.

- Don't start a game that you won't have time to finish. If you do make friends, they won't invite you if you have a history of quitting (even if it is not rage quitting). If you can only play for 30 minutes, tell them that in the lobby so they have a chance to get somebody else in there before the game starts.

It's for this reason, I miss my all-time favorite FPS multiplayer game: Starsiege Tribes. That game had soooo many tactics. Tribes 1 was awesome. Initially, you got to choose between heavy, light and medium armor.

Light armor allowing you with an energy pack to be a sniper, or with a jump pack travel across the map fairly quickly, but your dmg was kind of low and you had to dodge/dodge/dodge. Medium armor offered some speed and a bit of protection and a few bigger runs. Probably the best class for taking out heavies short of snipers.

Finally, you had heavy armors that were basically walking tanks firing motor shells providing cover-fire at base entrance points and backup. Extremely unmanuverable. You almost need a light nearby to protect you if lights/heavies showed up in close range. Hence, the teamplay aspect.

Finally, there was one more tactic/type/modifier which was the 'packs'. You had energy packs, ammo packs, cloaking packs, engineering deployment packs(ammo stations, equip stations) or repair packs. Each one of which allowed you to either fire longer before having to repair, use your jetpack more often/longer, become invisible for a short while as long as your energy lasted, deployment packs were super handy. Plant 1-2 near your heavy/tanks and as long as they ammo thing doesn't get destroyed, they can keep an area covered indefinately or equip could allow those tanks to turn into lights/mediusm if they saw a need to change. Finally, turrent deployments were handy for the obvious reason. Last but not least, the repair back was awesome for healing your allies, repairing damaged equipment stations, ammo stations, base turrents, etc.

That was my favorite and my character name back then was 'Maytag Repairman'. If anyone remember those old commercials. There was little glory in being a repairman, but, it made a world of difference towards helping out the team. You'd get a ton of 'Tanks' each game when you took someone almost dead and brought htem back to full health over 15-20s.

I should add the perfect part about this game was you needed the Rambo/just want to have fun types to try to go solo the flag, the team-work times to hold chokepoints/run distractions/protect the flag carrier and those whom didn't have the fastest reflexes made great heavies.

Every small team based game suffers from quitters/afk'ers. It's damn near impossible to come up with a viable solution it seems. Would love to hear any solid ideas.

The traditional solution is to play on servers which have active moderators who can check game play for this kind of thing, it's been the only sure fire way to be guaranteed a good game. Unfortunately there are very few servers with this kind of decent moderation.

There has been some reasonably decent automated systems in the past that help stop griefing, in Planetside (a FPS MMO) they had grief points which were awarded when you did friendly fire, they were dished out in escalating amounts, so if you fired repeatedly into friendlies in a short period of time each time you were given grief points it went up, 1 then 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 etc.

Because it ramped up like that, accidental (occasional) friendly fire only cost you 1 point in 1000, which is hardly anything, however repeated griefing could earn you massive amounts of grief points very quickly. It's not perfect but it's good enough to stop the basic friendly fire problems.

*edit*

More specifically with L4D it is hard to stop griefing because the game mechanics are so complex, the problem with L4D is that it's a battle of attrition, it's less about getting rewarded for making right moves and more about punishing you to varying degrees for your mistakes.

This forces players to worry about the mistakes they make, it puts too much emphasis on weak link in the team and really is just a recipe for alienating people, it's frustrating because the team is punished for 1 persons mistakes and obviously that leads to hostility towards team members.

The game is really too unforgiving, the survivors are often thrown into situations that are just clearly unbeatable, vs sometimes throws up tanks in linear tight corridors where you literally have no way to escape, there is always room for blaming someone, it's just not a good gaming environment.

The fun aspect of L4D2 went away a long time ago for me. When I switched to BFBC2 I switched completely. I don't think I have played L4D2 but one or two times since and I even uninstalled it for a long period.

No its not hard to stop. The real problem in the game is people leaving imo.

Which is directly related to there being no incentive to keep going when getting ones posterior violated. Moreso when you are not playing with people you know.

Of course and as my original argument stated, Valve should have implemented a match making system. Its really not that hard. Then again L4D2 was really a cash grab so it was never going to happen.

I have speech turned off, sorry but the majority of the time there is some ass clown playing L4D DJ saying everyone is baddies or wth the new term is. If people ask if I have a mic I say yeah and when they ask why do I not respond I reply with a kind FU and team kill them.

I dunno, it's pretty hilarious to me at least even if I do get kicked out or they cry afterwards.

ts is right, that wasnt just a random person l4d2 especially has a lot of assholes playing it. l4d1 was the same way by the end of things, it started out awesome then the active community just went to hell but vs is alot worse than coop its one of the reasons i stopped playing the games.

I have to admit in vs we were grade A jackasses. We had a group of about 6 guys who would normally play and we would always start the pub lobby and force it to go to our server. We had all talk turned on and then used Vent to chat among ourselves. Led to some hilarious games from our point of view.

So you've been playing a lot recently, got 1 idiot in a lobby and you ask if most are mean?

My question is, are most [H] forum posters clueless? I mean, I've been on here for over a year and I just read this thread where this guy was like... ;)

Bad example, many [H] forum posters are actually clueless. ;)

A few people in L4D are dicks, but whatever, it's nothing like people in something like HoN. Completely unforgiving community there.

I call bullshit. Sure there are a ton of dicks in HoN but all I have to do is +ignore +mute and I no longer have to hear mic or see text. They cannot kick me from a game and they themselves cannot leave without getting punished.

In L4D I can be in a normal game and have a higher score then my teammates, make 1 mistake and get kicked for no reason. I call that a worse scenario. And for the record I would venture to guess there are an equal number of dicks.

l4d2 demonstrates how effed up our society is. everyone rages because they have no patience. people expect everything NOW NOW NOW and when something doesn't go according to plan they'll bail.

The simple thing to combat this, like many have said is to just play with a group of friends. There you can play as serious as you want or whatever. People get upset when someone make mistakes, ya you can say it's only a game and meant for fun, but for many people it's not fun when people are messing around making mistakes.

I don't know what you guys expect, this goes for almost all games I've played consistently - CS, SC BW, SC2, and L4d2. As pointed out it is more apparent in l4d2 because of the size of the teams -- small teams vs larger teams (1 person doesn't really matter as much) vs just yourself (only you control what you do). It's just the way the game is setup, you'll find the same types of people in mostly all games I feel like.

Also to the person who says they will say FU and team kill their teammates, YOU and people like you are what is wrong with L4d2...

When I'm playing with new players i usually cut them some slack, but when i'm playing with ppl which have tons of playtime but still can't compete in versus due to : poor-zero communication / 20fps + vsync - gay default rates / wireless 80hz mice - mouse acceleration on / terrible situational awareness because they're playing with speakers instead of headphones then i can be REALLY mean to them like yesterday where i had the day off and played about 6 versus matches and won only 2 of them due to the immense amount of noobiness of my teammates. ( i play usually with members of the l4d2 greek community group only, but the teams are usually random not fixed )

I feel very frustrated at times, it may sound cocky but i have made ppl who have known me for quite a long time ragequit because they happened to be on the opposing team, some of them even accused me for hacking :S keep in mind that I skeet hunters pretty often, shoot boomers through walls/bushes and react like i can see behind walls and have eyes on my back. ( x-fi cmss3d pwns, hehe :p )

But .... when i'm playing with other 3 greek guys ( haven't pub stomped since last year, honestly, it's boring and feels unfair most of the time ) I can be really mean to them if they don't do follow my orders and rush forward like headless chickens who think its 4vs1.

Call me elitist / nerd i don't care, I got a full time job + a strict cutting diet which forces mean to eat small balanced meals every 3 f*cking hours + I do weights 4 times a week, i don't want to lose to noobs because a member of my team doesn't have even the half amount of skill that i do and/or doesn't follow orders, I've even removed some friends from my list because they costantly made the same stupid mistakes like camping their boomer behind a wall or missing a really easy charge ( like the classic one on dark carnival - chapter 3 - roller coaster ) , and i was usually not the only one who bashed them in-game.

Some other times i can be polite but when i talk like a truck driver and bark like a drill sergeant i usually do it because they 100% deserve it, you can't press right click when you see a charger or be SI and camp behind a wall ( unless obviously you're the hunter and you're standing upright instead of ducking ) it's just not acceptable for someone who has over 800hrs of playtime ffs ! Fyi I preordered a 4pack back in nov 09 and i'm currently at 570hrs total.

Btw rq is a cardinal sin and valve should develop a anti-rq system soon, I very rarely rage, even if my team is full of imbeciles i calm down after the end of second/third chapter and do my best, knowing that we're very likely going to lose in because somebody will screw up and it's 90% certain that I will be the last teamate to blame ( i do mistakes too, but not that often, no problem admiting it ) i have raged about 4-5 times so far and i only did it because the other 3 ppl got their egos destroyed and left, inviting me to join them at another lobby.

i'd team kill you if you started acting like this toward me

i'd team kill you if you started acting like this toward me

call vote -> kick player

call vote -> restart chapter

:p

and no i'm not usually THAT mean, unless i had a really hard day at work or i'm stuck with somebody who's really noobish and gets bashing from my other teamates too. ( we greeks are kinda warm headed in general :p )

If anybody wants to join me when i play l4d go ahead -> http://steamcommunity.com/id/SoFGR my english is not that good so if you do something stupid in purpose the rest of the team will vote kick you and that's it, seems much more productive to me than trying to call names in a non native language :)

Just play a bunch of games online and find some people you enjoy killing zombies with, add them to your Friends list and before you know it you will have plenty of cool folks to play with

IT'S FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Haha beat me to it. Had to rub it in my buddies face who bought me it just a week ago out of frustration because I told him I was going to wait til it went free. Made that mistake with TF2 two weeks before it went F2P.

I agree with Felipe Falange when he said Valve is single-handily keeping PC Gaming alive.

Merry Christmas all and thank our overlords @ Valve :D

Uh, that's not good news at all. Can't wait to play with even more clueless people :(

TF2 was never competitive to begin with but the game suffered greatly because it went f2p.

Can't really vouch for what you said about TF2 (never cared about it), but the issue with L4D2 currently has been a lack of players. Always have to end up playing the same 2 maps (No Mercy or Dead Air) because that's all that people played.

Giving people a free copy will help out the situation after a couple months once people realize that the campaign should be played before jumping into a versus game.

I only play with friends anyway. It will rejuvenate the pub scene a bit. But it is going to be a bit trying for guys that play pub games til the noobs get the hang of it.

I still want an anti friend ban list feature.
