So I haven't been following games much lately, but can someone explain how portal 2 is $49.99 all of a sudden? IIRC Portal was like $10 or $20 and came with the Orange Box, so how is the sequel so expensive? Portal was only a few hours of gameplay, so unless Portal 2 is somehow much longer and/or includes multiplayer I don't see how it could possibly be worth $49.;99.

It was $45 for pre-order, and it's already been on sale for $35. If you don't want to pay full price, then do your research.

It is two and a half times longer, but I have to admit that I was surprised by the price as well. Don't get me wrong, the series is superb, and obviously something completely different (and I have to admit that titles like World of Goo, or virtually any other title that's different, usually don't work for me - so hats off to Portal) but I'm going to wait until this is five dollars. And the way prices have been falling lately for games, that should be next week sometime.

Because Portal 1 was a tacked on experiment to the Orange box whereas portal 2 is a full fledged game with full game length.

It's much longer and includes multiplayer.

Portal 2 is a full game, portal 1 was a tacked on experiment to the orange box that was never meant to be a full size retail game.

I paid $40 for it as half of a 2-pack - been playing through the SP the last few nights, and this game is completely amazing! The graphics are way beyond the last source engine version (L4D2), and the game-play is everything I was hoping for and much more. I'm not sure how close I am to the end of the game now, but it seems like it's at least 3-4x the length of the original portal.

And yes, it does have 2-player co-op as a multi-player section. I haven't started on that part yet.

I can't really say if it'd be worth $50 to you, but if you liked Portal1, I don't think you'll regret it at all. If you can bear to wait a few months, you'll probably be able to get it for <$20 at christmas.

In the future, please refrain from using logic to support your argument, it's un-American!

Yeah, but who's to say he didn't know that Portal 2 is twice as long as Portal. $50 is still pretty steep for what amounts to a puzzle game.

How many people worked on this? It just doesn't seem like something you would need a big production team for. Ergo, the price ought to be less than fifty simoleans.

As others have pointed out, it's a much longer game than the original, and there's also the co-op story which makes up the 2nd half of the game. Took me about 8 hours to beat SP, and heard that co-op is roughly the same length.

I only paid $40 for pre-order on Steam, but I didn't pre-order it until a day or two before it was released so they must've dropped the price at some point leading up to the release.

It offers a larger experience overall. Such a fun game and well worth the full price I paid for it (well, the $35 I paid for the PS3 version).

There were discounts all over the place before release. Amazon had it for $34.99, Best Buy had it for similar. Steam had 10% pre-order discount and 20% for the two pack. Gotta get in early man. Cross platform Co-Op is a feature I would like to see more of!

I've heard it's still only 5-6hrs SP. MP being another 4-5 ish.

That's 9-11 hours right there which is better then crysis 2 or bulletstorm. Not to mention you know valve is going to add more free levels because that's what they do. Also it is a fantastically fun 9-11 hours.

Well worth the price IMO...Plus there are places selling it cheaper.

The single player campaign was the most fun I've had going through a game in quite a while.

It's quality that matters. Honestly, the orginal Portal was so good and with the custom levels had a lot of extended play. I would have been willing to pay that price but as others have said Valve just add more features and more content. It really is a no brainer.

I think bigger question is didn't you preorder and what are you waiting for? Do you not like good games! Get it already. ;)

I bought the PS3 version of Portal 2 from Amazon for $44.99 + I got a $20 gift code from Amazon for pre-ordering. I also got the PC version for free with the PS3 copy.

It's no Orange Box, but for a release deal like this, the game was more than worth it.

Read enough here and elsewhere to make me hesitate before buying it. Had a quick go at a friend's and am glad I went with that. Not paying full price for it.

I got about 8 hours on my SP play through and hopefully will get another 4-5 hours in the coop once some friends pick it up. Was worth it for me. It is Valve's best SP experience since HL2.

Even for those who missed all the pre-sale opportunities, it's not like Portal 2 won't be on sale in the near future. Heck, I purchased LFD2 for $20 within 1 week of it being released.

Anyone who purchases it at full price is foolish imho. It doesn't matter if it's the greatest game in the world or not. Heck, if someone was really that interested in it, they would have pre-purchased it and already gotten 10% off. And if not, just knowing that it's on steam should be enough to know that within the next 3 months or so, there will be a sale.

Pretty much. Besides, with the amount of good games coming out for less with more content in the near future I can get on with those. When I'm done with Section 8 and TW2 and BF3 and GW2 and Brink and whatever else, then I will definitely buy P2. Well, actually when I'm done with them I'll probably get Rage and Skyrim and Arkham City and ME3. And then by the time all those have been released and played it'll be time for the Steam Sales and then I'll definitely buy P2 :p

But, it just isn't a must-have-on-release title like lots of other stuff that's out very soon for less with - as far as I can see - far more playtime and enjoyment for the money.

lots of people have different views on money and supporting game companies than you guys. valve has been a good company for PC gamers and there is nothing foolish about rewarding companies for producing games you enjoy.

This I can't agree with. Especially with the whole Portal 2 ARG.

They're a company, and not the savior of PC gaming. As such, I feel no need to reward them as a company. If they produce a good game, I'll buy it. If not, I won't. It doesn't matter about their past. All that a track record will do for me is warn me if I should be cautious about an upcoming release.

Portal 2 is better than 95%+ of the crap that comes out at this price point.

If you don't want to buy a game because it's good then I don't know what to tell you.

ARGs are awesome even if there is no reward. Are people upset because of the promotion of the potato sack or because it didn't get portal 2 released before the weekend?

See, in the past you complained about Valve "worshippers" but here you are the one who is creating that. The guy said they are good for PC gaming. Then you twist that way out of proportion and change it to savior to support your view of Valve fans. Valve is one of the better PC developers along with Blizzard and some of the smaller guys. Not a savior, but better than most of the pack.

And in general I agree with the idea of waiting for game prices to drop. These days it doesn't take too long. But personally, some franchises I just can't wait on. Anything in the HL universe, or a Zelda game, they are always day one purchases. Mass Effect 3 will probably be the same, unless they completely bork it. I can't help it. ;) Especially with SP games, because it's so easy to fall into spoiler traps on the internet these days.

I paid $40 and have gotten my 11 hours out of the singleplayer+coop campaigns (both completed). I'll wait to see what the mod community comes out with for map packs, but I don't think I would have spent any more than $40 on it.

How much did you get it for? I'm seeing it retail for £5 (~$10) more than the usual PC game price point, despite Valve needing to pay no publishers.

I bought it, I played it, I enjoyed it. It is not fanboyism. I have a lot of games I spent tons of time on. stalker, skyrim, serious sam, witcher, DNF. i'll buy the sequels on launch. other games, yeah, I wait for the sales also. nothing wrong with that. but someone waiting until december to play a game, all the best to you.

In terms of time spent solving puzzles, using portals and other game mechanics (ie. actual gameplay), I'd be surprised if Portal 2 is that much longer than the first game. The bulk of the additional runtime is spent walking on catwalks, longer load times, longer stretches of dialogue, and longer scripted sequences.

I haven't bought it because I haven't even got around to playing the first one and I still have like 40 other games I need to complete first... 50$ is too much for me to pay for a 10 hour game.

Its about 6-7 hours (if you don't fuck around) in single player and about another 5-6 hours in co-op. It also has DLC coming I'm sure (for the co-op) that isn't just based around hats.

As far as the game experience goes .. best game I've played in about 10 years. I'm not joking , the story is amazing , extremely well written , funny as hell and not something you'll likely forget any time soon. There is excellent voice talent in the game (Stephen Merchant , J.K Simmons). The gameplay is a total blast , you'll have to really use your gray matter to think outside the box on puzzles and the reward you feel is pretty cool.

Its worth $49.99 .. shit its worth $59.99 ..

I would also like to add that the original could have been sold for $40-$50 by itself and been worth it.
