WinXP Death Counter Gadget Only Works on Win7, Vista?

Well, the gadgets are only supported in Vista and W7, right? Makes sense why the gadget isn't supported.
Of course, the fact that it is to count the time left of XP support is kinda funny. Maybe it is their way of telling you to upgrade.
Upgrade -> Gadgets -> How much time you would have had support left on XP before you finally upgraded

Because Windows XP doesn't officially support the Sidebar. They would need to make a separate app to sit on your desktop telling you to upgrade.

It's there so you know when to laugh even harder at people still running XP.

Well if they allowed netbooks to be sold into 2010 with XP installed, then they can provide security updates until 2020.

I fully expect them to cave on the 2014 date.

I don't. By time 2014 rolls around there will have been 3 major Windows releases since XP: Vista, 7, and 8 with 9 development probably well under way. With IE9 dropping support for XP and IE10 even dropping Vista they are moving forward.

By the time 2014 hits, Microsoft is going to have to call Jack Kevorkian for help, if he's still around... This will probably be preceded by Jack helping Steve Jobs.

Or laugh at anybody that gives a fuk about what OS you run...

However, it makes me wonder. Walk into a hospital/clinic and they run XP. A bank, XP, and so on.. Must be a pretty crappy O/S if so many people/companies/businesses still use it. I guess they all have to upgrade soon though.

As so-and-so said. XP user (me) spotted.

There are banks (Or at least were, into the mid 2Ks) banks that STILL ran COBOL/FORTRAN stuff for some of their infrastructure.

It's not because XP is the best thing ever (Although it *is* quite good), it's because upgrading costs money, and companies don't spend money unless they absolutely have to.

Someone at MS loves irony.
I think it's more likely a case of someone at Microsoft simply not thinking before doing. This approach is apparently not frowned upon in Redmond if past history is any indication.

Also remember, IT is also a cost center for most companies. Just like KaiserWarrior said, most companies won't spend on upgrades unless have to.

Yes IMO it sucks seeing XP. Hell the Military just upgraded to Win 7 from Vista. XP has been dead for about 3 years now. :D

I think people miss the point that these gadgets are for people that have moved on and want XP to die. Kind of like an election countdown timer. It 's for the people that want to see the current ones go, not the ones that will cry over the end.

It blows my mind how people act like such twats over something as simple as a person's OS.
You'd think they were talking about religion.

For the record...

2 XP Pro computers
1 Vista Ultimate
2 Win7 Pro
1 Win7 Ultimate

...Now I can be made fun of by all sides.

People still run XP? Yes, of course. There are many PC's out there that are underpowered to run Windows 7 (or Vista) that have to run XP if they are running Windows. Either the CPU is slow, only 512-1GB RAM, or something else.

But, I upgrade my PC pretty often, so I always run the newest OS. Others, not so much. So, while I'm of the mindset to upgrade before support runs out, some aren't and don't really care.

LOL @ U Vista noob! ;)

What's dog slow now is going to be unusable by 2014. Only the lowest end netbooks had XP standard in 2010, most of them had 7 starter, I would hate to be a user of one three years from now, let alone right now.

It's not on XP because when it reaches 0:00 on an XP machine ... existence would implode onto itself.

Oh of the self checkout registers crashed on me at the grocery store last week and it was running Windows 95

It's usually the Windows Vista/7 users that are anticipating the death of XP so the gadget's compatibility makes perfect sense to me. What doesn't make sense is the required validation check if you want to download it.

Why go through all that trouble for a stupid gadget, Microsoft?

It's not that XP is a 'crappy' OS, but one, when connected to a network it fails, because it lacks proper 0-day defenses that Vista and 7 have. Two, it lacks DX10/11 so the user base is holding back games (along with consoles, but more so XP as consoles support some DX10 stuff). For a unconnected business use, it's not terrible though.

As far as the gadget, it's like gushpinbob said, as well as being a gadget which was only added in Vista+, XP users are probably not interested in seeing when the OS dies, where as Vista and 7 users are eagerly awaiting the day.

The state of colorado still uses dos based programs for their welfare programs. According to reports it will supposedly cost the state over 100 million to upgrade their computer systems and all the programs and this is not including training our personel.

Here's what XP users can do if they want a countdown gadget:
1. Enable Active Desktop
2. Have the web page on Active Desktop point to ie6death.com
3. ???
4. Profit (and viruses).

COBOL and FORTRAN are programming languages, and there's nothing wrong with them.

I took FORTRAN77 2 years ago in my community college. It's still very much alive and kicking in labs around the world.

As is COBOL, especially on mainframes.
